Bernie Williams Re-Signs For 1 Year, $1.5 Million

Darn it, I’m sick of waiting for a link—ESPN is reporting that Bernie has re-signed for one year… okay, you read that above.  Let’s talk about that here.

I'm stunned that he signed for so little. Bernie had some big moments last year, let's hope that limited playing time will keep him as fresh as possible. It's also good to see that he won't be donning another uniform. Bernie has to be the easiest guy to root for.

Apparently nobody cares...

Great, Larry thinks I'm a nobody. Guess I need to get my post count above 1000 so I can be included in the Lounge post count.

Who are you?

Larry, that made me laugh. At least I hope I'm supposed to laugh, otherwise I might cry.

Incidentally, counting the rings on his trunk is the only way they can tell exactly how old Bernie is now.

On the subject of aging, horrible defensive centerfielders, the Giants acquired Steve Finley from the Angels for Edgardo Alfonzo.

The report I saw (on ESPN's Bottom Line) this morning had Bernie accepting arbitration.

I thought that the minimum salary cut in arbitration was like 20%. Didn't Bernie make $15 million last year?

Lounge post count?

TVerik, the salary cut only applies to people who have yet to hit free agency

Base, for a while someone ran some program that counted how many times each poster posted in a given time frame, but limited it to people who had a minimum number of posts. For a time it was 2000, but I think they lowered it to 1000. It was a lame attempt at humor, which is why I refrain myself from making more attempts.

For $1.5 million, I'll take what will probably be a fairly decent 400 PAs or so from Bernie's farewell tour.

so this moves damon to left, matsui to right, sheff to dh?

Primey.

Regarding the minimum salary cut in arbitration, I believe this issue was
addressed in the hand shake deal between Boras & Cashman at the winter meet-
ings. Something about Bernie would accept arb. if he agreed to turn it down
at a later date (obviating the % decrease rule). I'm guessing that he technically turned down the resulting figure, opening the door for a new
agreement.

Is that a joke?

A lot of articles I have seen suggest that Bernie will be the everyday DH, batting out of the 8 hole in this line up:

Damon
Jeter
Rodriguez
Sheffield
Matsui
Giambi
Posada
Williams
Cano

If your DH is hitting 8th, I think you are somewhat unclear on the concept of what a DH is supposed to be. Bernie also has been declining with the bat nearly as rapidly as he declined with the glove.

I like the idea of him as a 4th outfielder/pinch hitter, for old times sake. But can't the Yankees do better in the DH spot?

If Giambi stays healthy enough to play 1st regularly, Bernie could see a lot of time as the DH. However, that's a pretty big if given Giambi's track record. I wonder how hard the Yanks will work on getting a better backup 1st baseman.

Maybe they just got a backup first baseman
