Our Bullpen is Next

From the Elias Sports Bureau, via the Daily News, Proctor leads all relievers in baseball with 1,263 pitches this season, and Ron Villone is third on the list with 1,211.

The Yanks need an easy September, and they need to use some of those young arms a little bit more.  Beam, Karstens, that dude from Arizona, Veres.  Everyone on the 40 man should be here in September, everyone.

Columbus won't be making the playoffs this year, so after their season ends on Sept. 4, I fully expect to see the following reinforcements up with the big club:

Bruney
Beam
Henn
Veras
Karstens

I'd also suspect that DePaula, Mendoza, Colome, Rasner and Pavano will be in the Bronx at some point.

Pavano's rehab time is about to come to an end, and the Yankees will have to make a decision on him. Pitchers get 30 days (position players 20); I think Pavano's been out for between 25 and 30. Rehab time is cumulative, so his mid-May outings count against the 30 days. Pavano did very well in Trenton yesterday (4 IP, 1 ER, 5 K). My guess is that if he recovers well from this last outing he'll be activated for the weekend series in Anaheim.

Rasner's rehab outing in Tampa on Friday didn't go quite as well; he gave up only one run but allowed six hits, plus a walk and a hit batter in three innings.

Pavano is on the 60 day DL, so the Yanks are going to have to designate someone for assignment, or move someone to the 60 day DL. can they retro to the 60 day DL, how does that work? Obviously, Matsui is the choice there.

We aren't going to see Rasner until next year.

that dude from Arizona

I agree, put Randy Johnson in the pen.

Isn't Rasner rehabbing now too? I think we could see him back this year. As far as the 40 man roster moves that would have to be made,

Honestly, I'm really worried about Wang's workload catching up to him. He's never thrown more than 150 innings a season prior to '06, he's looked bad his last three starts, and he's got a shoulder surgery in his past. I think the Yankees need to skip him a few times in September if possible.

They can move a player off the 15-day DL to the 60-day without resetting his clock; it's done all the time.

If Pavano is activated, I expect that they would designate Mitch Jones to remove him from the 40-man, then option one of the relievers (Beam?) to clear space on the 25-man.

Then I would think they'd move Wright to the bullpen.

Mike finished my missing thought regarding the 40 man roster moves. Cairo, Matsui, and Sheffield are all on the 15 day DL. Pavano's actually listed on the 15 day DL too although that can't be right, can it?
   8. Sometimes it Rains (sj) Posted: August 21, 2006 at 11:27 AM (#2150077)
Ok, so then Matsui and even Sheffield could make room for Pavano.

I too, am worried about Wang, everything was up the last three outings. I thought that sinkerballers were supposed to be better on short rest/tired? MICHAEL KAY LIED TO ME!

I really don't think the Yanks have the pitching to beat Detroit/Minnesota in October, but that lineup is just a monster. Even Cano is seeing more pitches per PA.

Rasner's also on the 60-day, and Colome, DePaula, and Mendoza aren't on the 40-man. I suspect that none of them will show up in pinstripes come September 1.

The Yankees could probably designate Reese or Thompson for assignment without losing either one, and maybe even Mitch Jones.

Pavano, BTW, is only on the 15-day, according to both MLB and Fox Sports.

I would think Beam would get picked up off waivers, he isn't great shakes, but some team could use a lefty that throws low 90s.

Then I would think they'd move Wright to the bullpen.

Yeah, Proctor passed he previous career high in appearances in late April, I would be as worried about him as I am about Wang
   11. Sean McNally Posted: August 21, 2006 at 11:33 AM (#2150085)
Here's a thought - if they complete the sweep, and take two of three in Seattle, would you put Moose on the 15day retroactive to yesterday and have Pavano take his turn?

Gets Moose some rest and temporarily solves the roster disaster.

You misspelled R-I-G-H-T-Y.

No, because we would want to get Jaret Wright acclimated to the bullpen.

Unless Moose is really hurt, Wright would be great in the games Johnson gives up 7 runs in 6 innings and they trail 7-2 late.

Proctor pitches all those games too.
   14. Sometimes it Rains (sj) Posted: August 21, 2006 at 11:37 AM (#2150093)
Whatever, someone would pick him up. I am sure of it.

Also, let's remember that Dotel may be helpful if his command improves. His stuff still looks live.

Torre said he wants to get Pavano a start in AAA, FWIW, so it's more likely that Pavano will be pitching in Columbus on Friday than in Anaheim.

So who was sent out for Lidle to come off the bereavement list?
