Phenom moves closer…

Phil Hughes, the Big Texan with bigger fastball, has gotten the call and will start Thursday against the Reading Phillies.

In five starts at Single-A Tampa, Hughes pedestrian 2-3 record belied his peripherals - 30 strikeouts against just two walks, only 19 hits allowed in 30 innings of work (figuring to a .178 BAA). In that time he allowed just six earned runs and no homers.

Reading should be a nice break-in to Double-A… they have a combined line of .220/.287/.297, scored just 72 runs in their 21 games and have homered a circuit low six times.

After his first couple of starts, some breahtlessly felt Hughes could see time in the Bronx as soon as this September. I’m inclined to root for slow promotions from here on out - but it was clear based on his Tampa resume, there was nothing left for him to prove there.

Thanks as always to the intrepid Mike Emeigh who spotted this...

I think he's Georgian, not Texan.

I'm tempted to try and catch the game, but I'm not sure that I can get to Trenton in time. I can't wait til I'm able to go and see him dominate, though.

Yeah yeah yeah, so he is Georgian. What's really the difference? Substitute oil for peaches and it's all the same.

Actually, Fabian got it before I did.

Hughes will be on a pitch count, but it will be around 100 pitches.

Yeah, there wasn't much left for Hughes to prove at A-Ball considering he's struck out 51 and allowed only 27 H and 6 BB in 47.1 IP at Tampa between this year and last.

In a perfect world, I'd like to see Hughes spend the rest of the year at Trenton, then spend the first half of 2007 in Columbus. Of course, if he keeps dominating hitters like this, it'll be hard to hold him back.

Anyone seen this yet? I guess a continued dominance from A to AA was a little too optimistic. But Hughes seems to have a good attitude about his first AA start. God! Please don't let him develop arm problems.

What a bum. Trade him for a middle reliever.

I listened to part of the game. It didn't sound like he got hit really hard, but he was falling behind people quite a bit. Could be nerves.

It was definitely nerves.

Are the Yankees letting him use his slider yet?

Yep.

May not be important to anyone else but me, but coverage of Hughes' second start for Trenton. I reiterate: God! Please spare him any arm problems!

I remember when Hughes was drafted I was unimpressed and disappointed Weaver hadn't fallen. Thank God that didn't happen.

Looking over his gamelog I noticed he was a GB machine to start the game, but as it wore on he started giving up mainly FBs. I don't know if this is normal for him (or all pitchers), though. He also have up ZERO line drives. Can't wait until the first time I can catch one of his starts.

Below AAA you can't rely on ball types associated with hits in the game logs, unfortunately.
