3 Questions

1: What in the world is going to happen with this roster?

Looking at the infield, [Edit: added catchers] John Buck and Jason LaRue at C, Alex Gordon at 3B, Angel Berroa at SS, Mark Grudzielanek at 2B, Ryan Shealy at 1B and Mike Sweeney at DH are locks. Esteban German is a lock because he’s the only backup at 2B and SS and, when Mark Teahen is playing in RF, he’s the only backup at 3B, too. Buddy Bell reportedly likes Ross Gload, so he seems to be a lock.

That’s nine players locked in for the infield.

In the outfield, Emil Brown in LF, David DeJesus in CF and Mark Teahen in RF are locks. Bell’s going to try to get Reggie Sanders in 3-4 games a week, so it would seem he’s a lock.

There’s four players locked in for the outfield, plus I’d be surprised if Joey Gathright doesn’t make it as a defensive OF and pinch-runner. (However, Gload can play in the outfield, so perhaps Gathright is indeed on borrowed time.)

This leaves 10 slots for pitchers, five in the bullpen.

So who’s a lock here?

It seems like the 1B/DH jam of Sweeney/Shealy/Gload might be taking away from the bullpen’s potential for enough men, especially if they also keep Gathright up (thereby removing most of Gload’s OF functionality). Is this a problem?

2: So how much of a thorn will Ross Gload be in our collective side this season?

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I think Gload’s a bad player. In fact, I think he’s too good. He is forcing the Royals to take 3 DH/1B players into the season. Also, his presence will always personify the everlasting threat that Buddy Bell will bench Ryan Shealy. A world in which Shealy’s benched in favor of Gload would only be made worse by Dayton Moore calling Justin Huber up and sending down Alex Gordon, and having Huber and Shealy play chess while on the bench while being forced to sign “Mmm Bop” by the Hansons.

So here’s an over/under for you: Plate appearances Ross Gload will have this season—175.

3: Have some free time?

Then read this right now. It is tremendous.

Also, how Royals Authority, Royals Review, H.G. Miller, Breaking 100 and Lee Warren keep regularly posting baffles me. I’ll soon be trying to kick up to regular posting, but when I’m not doing it and others are, it never ceases to amaze me. I suggest following those links for some fine analysis.

Also, I forgot to mention I picked up Poz' book and I read the first half of it in about an hour and a half. I hope to have the other half done tonight and I might get a review up for it soon.

Answers (or attemps at answers)
1. If you assume that Buck and LaRue make the squad, then the last outfield spot has to go to either Sanders or Gathright. So you have Gordon, Berroa, Grudzielanek, Shealy, German, Gload, Sweeney, Buck, LaRue, Brown, DeJesus, Teahen, and one of Sanders/Gathright.
As for pitchers: Meche, Hudson, Perez, Bannister, Greinke, DeLaRosa, Riske, Peralta, Bale, Gobble, Dotel and one of Soria/Wellemeyer.
2. Since Buddy has a serious crush on Gload, Russ will be a tremendous and recurring pain not only in our sides, but in our backsides as well. I take the over on plate appearances.
3. The Royals Retrospective article is outstanding.

Oh, wow. I cannot even believe I forgot catchers. I was talking to a friend, and we counted like 9 spaces left for pitchers, and I wondered why after my post here it didn't seem nearly so cramped.

I'm going to edit the post. Many thanks, Vrhovnik.

Ross Gload is the kind of name that sounds really cool when Denny Matthews says it.

Is DeJesus back to CF really a lock?

As #2 points out, you forgot about Buck and LaRue who of course make the team.

I seriously doubt the Royals will go into the season with Brown/Sanders/Gload all on the roster. Gathright almost has to be on the roster, Sanders can't be the backup CF. I would guess Gload will be the loser, whether Bell likes him or not, barring a trade of Sanders or Brown.

Will be interesting to see what happens with Gload. Will he be given a large role? I mean, he was acquired for flame-throwing, taco-eating Andy Sisco.

Any chance in hell Sweeney is moved somehow?

1. I gotta think Reggie will be released/traded. But if not:

C Buck
1B Shealy
2B Grudz
3B Gordon
SS Berroa
LF Brown
CF DeJesus
RF Teahen
DH Sweeney
Bench: LaRue, German, Sanders, Gathright, Gload

SP Meche
SP Perez
SP Hudson
SP de la Rosa
RP Soria
RP Wellemeyer
RP Peralta
RP Riske
RP Gobble
RP Bale
RP Dotel

In the second week of the season, they'll need a fifth starter. My guess is Bannister with Joey Gathright sent to Omaha, but where the heck will he play there? Omaha will have a loaded OF - Lubanski-Maier-Butler with Costa as well.

2. I think Gload easily gets 350 plate appearances. Buddy loves him.

3. Thanks! Sorry if they're a bit lengthy!

I gotta tell you, unless maybe German can cover CF, there's no way they don't have Gathright on the 25-man. Even with Brown, DeJesus, Teahen, it's not like you couldn't use a good defensive replacement with that bunch. I don't think Sanders is it at this point in his career.

I'll admit I'd forgotten they'd given up something resembling a real player for Gload. But it will likely come down to whether they'd rather let Gload go (I assume he's out of options) or eat Sanders' contract. I have little doubt they'd love to trade Sanders but I assume they've been trying to do that all offseason. So to move him, either they'll have to eat almost his entire contract and take little in return ... or hope some contending team's OF suffers a season-ending injury this spring and is desparate enough to give Sanders a shot. Heck, it might take both of those to move Sanders.

Pitching aside, that's a really decent roster.

Aside from the shooting Mrs. Lincoln, how was the show?
