Dotel official, LHP Bale signed, Batista still rumored

Link to Bob Dutton’s story.

They reached an agreement Friday morning on a one-year contract with veteran reliever Octavio Dotel and further supplemented their bullpen by signing left-hander John Bale to a two-year deal.

Bale spent the last three years pitching for the Hiroshima Carp in the Japanese Central League after spending parts of four seasons in the big leagues with the Blue Jays, Orioles and Reds.

The Royals might not be done, either. General manager Dayton Moore said the club is continuing to pursue free-agent pitcher Miguel Batista and also exploring trade options.

“We’ve helped ourselves,” he said. “We’ve done the best we possibly could at this point in time.”
...
The deal with Dotel calls for $5 million in guaranteed money with the possibility of another $2 million through performance bonuses.
...
The Royals are still waiting to hear back from Batista on their offer of $24 million over three years. The club seems unwilling, at this point, to sweeten that offer, which suggests Batista might be leaning toward signing elsewhere.

So, here is the updated list:

ROYALS ADDITIONS:
--Gil “The Epic” Meche
--Octavio Dotel
--John Bale
--Brian Bannister
--Joakim Soria (Rule 5)
--Richie Lewis (Rule 5, Triple-A edition)

ROYALS SUBTRACTIONS:

--Ambiorix Burgos
--PTBNL (for LaRue—has this been revealed yet?)
--Money

ROYALS RUMORS:
--Miguel Batista, sort of

Bale has signed a two year deal with the Royals.

Bale's MLB stats

Bale's Japan League Stats

In addition, Kansas City agreed to a $4 million, two-year contract with left-hander John Bale that will pay him $1.8 million next year and $2.2 million in 2008.

Apparently they out-bid the Yanks to get him. This seems like a bundle of money for a guy that hasn't really proven himself at the MLB level.

It seems to me like $4 million I'd rather have in the Alex Gordon trust fund.

It seems like a $1.2 million investment or so until the trade deadline when they hope they can pawn him off to the Reds for a prospect or 2. Or it could turn out real bad and have sunk $4 million into thim for nothing.

Of course, at least they didn't spend $50 million for the right just to talk to the guy.

I fail to see the downside of the Bale signing. I'm sure that they'll use him as a reliever, but even as a starter with the Reds he was pretty good. If you look at the boxscores from 2003, he had about three bad innings all year which accounted for half of his earned runs that season. He really pitched pretty well. He strikes out guys, he doesn't walk anybody. And four-million dollars over two years? You guys are complaining about that? Hell, two million bucks is the equivalent of finding free talent these days. Nice signing, I say.

Looks like the Mariners are going to get Batista. I don't think we needed him anyways, since from what I've read they wanted to use him in a closer role and we already got Dotel.

I don't think they'd pay him $8 million per year to be the "closer." At least I hope they wouldn't. I was also under the impression that he wants to be a starter, so I don't think he'd sign with a team that didn't have that in mind.
