One more Buddy Bell post

I’ve made my peace with the Buddy Bell resignation (it was a long, hard process, but I’m finally at acceptance). Anyway, Dag Nabbit has written a wholly enjoyable musing/summary of Bell’s career at the great new site, Ballhype (is it too old to call it new?). Check it out.

All of that made me think, invariably, of Justin Huber—for reasons I don’t care to discuss without throwing myself back into the grief cycle.

But I do want to see how he’s doing, because I really haven’t heard about him in a long while and, let’s face it, it’s looking more and more like Ryan Shealy isn’t the long-term answer at 1B that Dayton Moore had marketed him to be in the Affeldt/Bautista trade.

In 55 games at Triple-A Omaha this year, 208 ABs | 13 HR, 52 RBI | 14 BB, 33 K | .269/.328/.510.

Pretty good, but it’s no 2005 Double-A .343/.432/.570 in 88 games that came pre-… uh, pre-Buddy Bell.

Still, might be worth a call-up to the MLB with the understanding that he will actually play at least two out of three games.

This is a bit off topic, but damn I hate The Bronx is Burning.

I watched the Bronx is Burning hoping the outcome would change. Its actually been pretty entertaining, but they should really avoid the recreation of baseball scenes. Its jarring to watch actual footage from the 70s in grainy film, then switch to what is obviously a soundstage and obviously an actor who is not MLB quality. It was also funny to see in a recreation that Royals Stadium magically grew real grass.

I don't get Dayton's treatment of Huber. He's younger than Shealy, equal to or better production. Not really sure why he felt the need to get Shealy AND Gload. He must really be down on Huber. I hope he gets a shot, but I'm nearly certain it won't be with the Royals.

Garth, any thoughts on the next manager? We should have a post looking at potential candidates and going over their pros and cons. Early on, I like Trey Hillman, but I have no idea if he will even be considered.

Maybe the problem with Huber is Bells thing and not Moore. Wasnt he brought up last year just to sit on the bench until he was sent back down? Its also obvious that neither Moore or Bell see Butler as the long term solution at 1st. Giving Gload those starts night in and night out seems to be a big waste.

Speaking of The Bronx is Burning, those ears they put on Martin look more like they were fashioned from a political cartoon of Bush then Billy Martin.

Well, I guess they made the past somewhat better for KC.

I haven't watched the show, have they gotten to the part where Freddy Patek weeps?

This response is rather belated, but I think it takes some gonads, if you will, to let Shealy ride his time on the Disabled List, with a nagging injury that could have sent him either in the playing direction or the D.L. direction. Shealy's situation is something that Baird would have examined, and Baird would have probably promoted Shealy much, much sooner to let him play simply to "prove" the validity of that trade (Affeldt/Bautista-for-Shealy/Dohmann).

I think Shealy is no longer the long-term (or short-term, for that matter) solution at first base and I fully expect the Royals to go out and land a free agent bat this offseason to help that position, or to move Teahen or Gordon, ultimately, to the first base position.

Huber did have 68 RBI in 75 games. Maybe they'll find that stat more convincing? I really don't understand why one wouldn't play the guy.

Where have you gone, Garth DiMaggio?
