Open Thread Time

As I finish up finals and get my laptop back up to snuff, please feel free to use this as an open thread.

Some recent news:

--Zack Greinke to the bullpen, not sure why.
--Angel Berroa back up in the majors when we need a first baseman, not sure why.
--Related to that, Alex Gordon playing first base and Billy Butler benched, not sure why on both and the latter reeks of The Justin Huber Treatment.
--Ross Gload to the DL, Shealy close to being back?
--Whatever happened to that Dotel guy?
--Wow, that Luke Hudson knows how to make an entrance, doesn’t he?
--Gil Meche’s AL Rankings: 1st in IP, 2nd in batters faced, 2nd in ERA (1.91!), 2nd in ERA+ (240!). Also, he’s 3-1 in 9 starts on a 13-27 team. If he keeps this up, he’ll be pretty much the best Royals pitcher in my memory of watching the team. I was a tad too young for Cone or Appier, really.
--Meche also looked very good against Haren, arguably the AL’s best pitcher so far this year, for two straight games.

--Emil Brown still a blight on the roster. That speaks volumes.

Greinke has pitched really well out of the pen. Maybe this will be a good experiment for him. I expect him back in the rotation as soon as (a) they move Odalis or Elarton; or (b) someone inevitably gets hurt

Berroa is back yes, and we needed a backup infielder. As for another 1B, there weren't any really great options. Gordon has played 1B in the past, and of course Sweeney hasn't totally forgotten how to play the position. Huber is on the DL in Omaha. Craig Brazell isn't on the 40 man roster, and is more of a DH from what I understand. Same with Mike Stodolka.

The Billy Butler treatment baffles me. Soren Petro thinks a rift is developing between Dayton and Buddy which would spell the end of the Buddy Bell era if true. I can't imagine it is sitting well with Dayton to have Butler on the bench, especially after he said Butler would play every day.

They're going to keep Shealy in the minors on "rehab" as long as the league allows. I think he needs to play every day at the MLB level. This is a sink or swim season for him. Either he can hit major league pitching, or he's a AAAA player. This is the year to find out.

Dotel is in Wichita on rehab. They're saying he might be back in KC as early as next week, although don't be surprised if there are some setbacks.

Luke Hudson, blech. I think he rushed it back. There's also the possibility he was just using the same pixie dust as Todd Wellemeyer last year, and it has run out in 2007.

Its great to see Meche off to a great start. However, I've already seen some people say that this vindicates Dayton Moore. Uh, what? He's one month into a five year deal. Let me remind people that one month into Mike Sweeney's five year deal he was hitting .268/.415/.521 with 5 home runs. Did that make his contract a good one? No. So let's wait and see with Meche, and in the meantime, enjoy his great pitching (no earned runs in 27 IP on the road? Unbelieveable!)

Things could be worse. I am thrilled with Buck's start to the season and Teahen looks like he kept most of the improvement from last year. Meche has been quite good and there are some good things happening in the pitching staff. Meche now has 8 QS in 9 starts.

Gordon looks terrible right now and may need a Teahen wake-up in Omaha. I do not like him at 1st base. Leave him at 3rd and see whether he can handle it. Moving him around is not helping.

Let me help Buddy out here:
Put Shealy at first and leave him alone.
Put Gordon at 3rd and leave him there. Fine, bat him 9th a few times to get his attention.
Play Butler in left.
Soria does not need to pitch every game, OK?

Now, Dayton:
Come July it's time to flip Perez for a middle infielder.
Meche, De Le Rosa, Bannister, Greinke and then Elarton / Hudson - hey, I can live with that this year. Next year, Hochevar / Buckner, maybe even Rosa will be in the mix.
Oh, and fire Buddy Bell.

Shealy is supposed to be activated today or tomorrow supposedly, so Gordon's days at 1B and Butler's days in Kansas City could soon be over.

Greinke needs to be traded.

Berroa will be a good utility infielder for us - assuming he is never allowed to hit or play defense.

The Butler Issue - I hope we didn't just set that kid back a season or two...

Shealy is not as bad as his batting average, but he is not as good as his hype.

Luke, I am your father. Or at least you pitch like me anyway...

Gil Meche final stats prediction - 200+ IP, 3.42 ERA, 150 K's, 11 wins, 21 quality starts
