Pine Tar Charts up and running / Gordon needs a nickname

It’s just a start of a long, winding road, but my FanGraphs blog, ”Pine Tar Charts,” is up and running.

I made a post, introducing/explaining the three stats I’ll be charting most: WPA, BRAA, and REW.

Then I made my first regular season post, checking out some fun graphs about the Opening Day game.

-----

Alex Gordon needs a nickname.

Alexander the Great works well, because of the A.G. thing, but it’s just too unwieldy. It has to be something short and to the point, preferably something that can be substituted for his name altogether.  Freddie ‘The Flea’ Patek, Hammerin’ Hank Aaron—those are the nicknames dreams are made of.

AG or A-Gor is ruled out. We need something fun and original, and I sure won’t be typing “A-Gor” 200 times this season.

Also, I forgot -- Ballhype has been opened to the public. Go check it out pronto. It's like Digg for sports news -- you submit sports news stories and the people there vote up/down. The best vote-getters get moved to the top. Also, you can have a feed of news pertaining to your favorites (favorite teams, players, blogs, etc.) into one feed that you can read there.

At the very least, it has a lot of potential and can be really cool. Worth your clicks, I think. My profile name is "Garth" (original, ain't it?), and I'll probably be submitting some of my better posts there. I know Hardball Times has really gotten into Ballhype so far, and guys like David Gassko and David Pinto ("StatsGuru") are on there already.

I think this works. Maybe it takes a little longer to say or type, but Gordon is worth the extra time.

"Commissioner" Gordon?

Barbara "Batgirl" Gordon is stronger vis a vis the baseball angle, but somehow I don't see it catching on.

It's no worse than The Old Woman In The Red Hat.

"Commissioner" Gordon?

Sorry, my buddies and I already annointed Ben Gordon this after an all-night stonerthon on NBA Live 2005.

You've got to give these things time and let them emerge. Who realized two years ago that Zack Greinke would become Pro-Zack?

I'm calling him Smash Gordon.

How about we call him Alex "The Strikeout King" Gordon. Too negative? :p

how about Alex "The Lincoln Swing" Gordon?
