Royals trade for SS; Berroa done

I don’t see it on the Newsblog yet, so here it is:

The Kansas Royals have acquired shortstop Tony Pena Jr. from the Atlanta Braves for minor league right-handed pitcher Erik Cordier. To make room for Pena on the 40-man roster, the Royals placed reliever Joe Nelson on the 60-day Disabled List.

You can analyze this anyway you want, but it more or less spells the end for Angel Berroa.

Please read it—the writer caught up with Moore, and has a quote from him. I didn’t want to copy/paste the whole thing here, so please check it out.

--------

Some links: Pena’s projections for this year, his minor league stats. He is the son of all-star Tony Pena, the former Royals manager (who I believe is still a catchers coach with the Yankees).

Well, this is good news for this year, if only to remove Berroa’s bat and defense from the equation. Pena certainly doesn’t look like any offensive juggernaut, but he’s having a decent spring offensively (hitting .342 in 38 ABs). He’ll be 26 this year, I believe, so he’s no spring chicken and likely only represents a short-term answer at short. The Royals still lack any major SS prospect that can be in the bigs by this year or even next.

Erik Cordier is young, 20 years old. He had a 5.19 ERA in his first year, in rookie ball. He didn’t play any in 2005 (his 21-year-old season), but I don’t know why. He did a little better in ‘06, but has only advanced so far to single-A. Perhaps the Braves see something in him Moore doesn’t.

---------

Is it weird to anyone else that Moore is trading with Schuerholz?

Perhaps the Braves see something in him Moore doesn’t.

Pena is out of options and the Braves didn't have a place for him, so it was trade him of lose him through waivers in a week. Better to help out an old friend and get an injury-addled A-baller with a 1 in 100 shot of being something than just lose him.

Pena is a pretty ideal short-term solution. He really can field and he's a very smart ballplayer, even if he can't hit at all.

I thought General Beane made similar trades of replacement level talent with his former sidekicks.

For those who have followed him, what happened to Berroa exactly anyway? I'd say an
over-age (25) y/o rookie with a crappy K/W ratio who got a little lucky in his rookie
season then proceeded to not develop an inch from there, and in fact regressed. Is
this yet another data point for the "Crappy teams have trouble developing young talent"
meme?

Cordier is VERY raw, he pitched high school ball in northern Wisconsin and with baseball season there being so short he would up only throwing around 35 innings (in which he walked 15-20 guys). Also he faced weak competition as an amatuer. He missed 05 with a knee injury and will miss 07 with Tommy John surgery.
Thats the bad news about him.
The good news is that he has (had) the 2nd most upside of Royals minor league pitchers (behind Hochevar) as he has hit 98 MPH with a good change...at least according to BA

I'd say it was a combination of having a career year as a rookie, not developing, and then not dealing well at all with failing to repeat the performance of his rookie year.

What could the Royals have done to keep Berroa from progressing??? It was all Berroa and it was all in his head.

This is a kindof silly move, Blanco is younger, could improve more, and is potentially better with the bat.
Oh and he wouldn't cost a prospect.

Still I like this move because:
-We won't miss an oft-injured minor leaguer, TINSNAPP!!!!!
-Tony Pena's one of my favorite players/managers EVER, love his attitude, love that we have a small peice of him on this team again.
-No more Berroa, that said, as much as we all hate Angel as a player, I kinda feel for him, he never seemed like a bad guy and he took years of abuse as he became the focus of thousands of Royals fans frustration at years of losing.
I'll be glad when he's gone, but I'll root hard for him wherever he ends up.

I just PRAY that this move doesn't mean DM is satisfied with the SS position, and that he will continue to look and improve the situation at short.
I also hope for my namesakes' sake that this Andres Blanco's career hasn't bee killed by an older, less advance for his age version of himself.

I dont know WHY youre glad about getting rid of Cordier. Yeah the odds of him making it are low, but it woudlnt cost anything to keep him around and supposedly you have no arms (save Hochevar) with as much raw talent.

That's very much how I've felt, especially since he had been working so hard over the last winter.

If TPj is anything like his father KC area screenprinters are applauding this move.

BELIEVE!

Is there any way the Royals can kick Berroa off the 40 man roster? They need to free up spots for Alex Gordon, Brandon Duckworth, and some guy named Arthur Santos they picked up.
