The beginnings of a man-crush + game pictures!

Well, despite the early feelings I had about the Erik Cordier/Tony Pena Jr. trade (indifferent-to-mildly-negative), Pena is really, really impressing me so far.

His three (awesomely cool) triples aside, his plate discipline and defense is really endearing to me. I’ve been to half of the games so far this year (I’m at 100% loss rate), and Pena has impressed me more than once in each game.

[I have an awesome picture of his great play from Saturday’s game, below.]

But my favorite part is the fact that he’s batting 9th, as a secondary lead-off hitter. He has the plate discipline and speed to get on base often in time for the top of the order to come around. David DeJesus seems to be a meld of ideal 1-spot and 2-spot hitters, and thanks to Pena, he can be.

I really like Pena’s improvement over Angel Berroa. My man-crush of him has begun.

Now, the pictures from Saturday’s game. Frankly, I cared less about getting certain pitcher’s and hitter’s pictures and just looked for cool shots. Hope you enjoy.

--Meche pitching to who I believe is Curtis Granderson Placido Polanco.
--Pena’s amazing play! [With terrible focus!]
--Sanders coming in from his home run.
--Because we all need hugs from Sluggerrr.
--DeJesus, I-Rod, and the ump patiently await.
--Airball.

Are Tony Pena's triples a result of people playing him at pitcher depth or are they earned?

I think anytime there's 3 triples in 4 games, luck plays a major factor. Now that isn't to say he didn't earn singles or doubles on those hits, but I'll chalk 90% of the triples to luck.

Tony Pena Jr = a healthy Carlos Febles (with less hitting ability)

Also, if you'd care to be depressed, here is the graph of the Royals' chances of winning today.

Isn't Granderson a lefty? I don't think that's him in the first pic.

It has to be Polanco, the only Tiger hitter with a number ending in 4 (14) and a righty.

Well played, gentlemen. It's been updated.

The first two were the result of Coco Crisp not being good. The third was as shot down the right field line. I didn't think the kid would have three extra base hits all year, much less three triples the first week, so consider me impressed.

But a man crush Garth? Aren't you a bit old for that? Next thing you know, you'll have an immature handle like "Tony Pena's #1 Fan".

The Pena play. That's pretty freaking amazing.

But a man crush Garth?

It's too late to save me -- Mark Teahen has already earned full man-crush status.

That's pretty freaking amazing.

I was already making angry comments about Gil Meche by the time the ball got to Pena. The fact that he fielded it and cleanly threw him out is borderline unintelligible. The spot where he fielded it would have been a decent play for a second baseman to make let alone a shortstop coming across second base. Nice stretch by Shealy, too.

I've been most impressed with his defense. There were a number of times in the first few games where a ball was struck and I thought in my mind: base hit. Then all of a sudden here's Pena in the shot getting a glove on it. He may not be great defensively, but it sure made me realize how bad Angel was.

That play was ridiculous. I'm looking forward to seeing this kid's defensive highlights going forward.

It's always great to see a player get his chance, both scouts and statheads be damned, always good to see deadwood jetisoned to make way for fresh timber.

Can't believe I wrote that.

Color me impressed by Dayton Moore once again.

I think Moore's MO is starting to come into focus. When he wants a piece of the puzzle, he decides very specifically what he's looking for, finds a player who fits the profile, then pays what he needs to get that particular player.

That sounds really generic, but consider the Pena trade: all winter long, Moore talked about Berroa working on improving the defense, with the bat a secondary concern. When Berroa didn't deliver, Moore found a player who fit exactly the profile he had set up for Berroa. The trade was basically fair for both teams, although Cordier was a pitcher who you might have liked to keep around.

Other trades that fit this model are Howell for Gathright and Sisco for Gload (Burgos for Bannister, too?). In all of these trades, the player the Royals got filled a very specific role.

These trades aren't uniformly good, but I think the pattern is becoming noticeable.

Tony Trips struck again today. 4 Triples on the year.

1. The idea of Tony Pena, Jr. being even vaguely useful frightens and confuses me.

2. Dayton Moore exchanged spare parts with his buddy John Schuerholz. Pena was out of options and fifth in the SS/2B depth charts in Atlanta.

One short of his professional career high in a season.

I predicted Pena Jr. would win the Gold Glove this year, because of the bloodline, the general backlash against Jeter's reputation, and the fact that it's been a long time since a true "glove man" has won the GG in the AL. Then I saw that play that you have picture of, and now I know he will win the Gold Glove.

I was positive Aaron Rowand was going to win the GG in 2005 after an incredible four-game stretch, with three in Yankee Stadium. Instead, they gave it to Torii Hunter and his 98 games played.

The lesson: Never bet against the incumbent.

I remember thinking the exact same thing.

"The lesson: Never bet against the incumbent."

At some point, the managers have to consider their reputation and legacy don't they? HA! Kidding. I know it's a long shot, but if anyone's gonna unseat my man Jeter (who has like 8 billion errors already), I think it's gonna be this guy. Plus, if I'm right, bragging rights.
