At least, at least, may our boys win Game 5 and if the Rays get their celebration, have it happen in that trash-heap of a ballpark in the strip-mall hell that is the Gulf Coast of Florida and not on Fenway's grass.
The big difference, of course, is that this is a seven-gamer. I think the day off will be good for the Sox.
Oh well, we aren't gone yet.
But man, I'd sure be happy to see Papi show up when it counts with runners on.
Hopefully two championships in three years tempered everything.
I know it's not easy to watch this as a fan of the team, but if the championships of recent years aren't solace enough, keep in mind this is a great team they're playing. It's not like having to watch the Dodgers steamroll your favorite team.
Not over yet, though.
Which has to be considered a net positive. The rest are duly noted.
1) Didn't mean to troll on Sox Therapy. Sorry. I clicked in from hot topics and didn't realize I was on this board.
2) I've seen the Sox come back from this a time or two.
He should be not allowed anywhere near a starting rotation spot EVER in the playoffs again. I don't care if he has another half decent year like he did this year - he should never see a playoff game again. I'd rather a half fit Beckett than this.
edit - Game 2 will haunt us a for a while. I get the shits just thinking about it
All the recent success of the franchise makes the failures easier to take. If this ain't gonna be our year, though, I'd rather not see it slip away in our own house. Let's hope we can hold down the fort tomorrow night at least. Besides, if the Rays are going to represent the varsity in the Series this year, they deserve to celebrate that accomplishment with their home fans. And a very worthy representative they would be, should it come to that.
Plenty of baseball left to play, though.
The Red Sox are getting their asses kicked by a better team.
How long can Tampa keep this nucleus together before they hit FA? Crawford must be close. Pena has some years under his belt. Longoria stays for 4 more years. Kazmir? Garza is a 2nd year pitcher, right?
They're gonna have to pay some players soon, though.
Boston was near the team lead league in hitting HR in 08.
Rays hit 10th most HR as a team in the AL this year. Sox were near the top in fewest HR allowed. Add up facing mostly top pitchers, cool nights in October, and I figured the Rays might hit 3 long balls the whole series.
Guess I figured wrong, huh?
Pena - 2 years/$18.125
Iwamura - 1 year/$3.25, option $4.25-5.25
Longoria - 5 years/$14, 3 options/$30
Bartlett - 3 years to FA
Crawford - 2 options/$18.25
Upton - 4 years to FA
Gross - 3 years to FA
Floyd - option/$2.75
Aybar - 5 years to FA
Kazmir - 3 years/$26, option/$13.5
Shields - 3 years/$8.25, 3 options/$28
Garza - 5 years to FA
Sonnanstine - 5 years to FA
Jackson - 3 years to FA
Wheeler - 2 years/$6.7, option/$4
Bradford - 1 year/$3.5
Balfour - 2 years to FA
Howell - 4 years to FA

Sure the offense has tanked but we have a potential slump-buster pitcher (Kazmir) facing us in Game 5. The bats wake up, Matsusaka pitches well, and we're looking at Lester v. Shields in Game 6, a fairly even proposition, I think. We win Game 6, and then the pressure shifts back to Tampa Bay, who would start Garza, a guy just as capable of blowing up mentally as Beckett would be physically, and so Game 7 could be a 13-12 slugfest.
It's a dimly-lit path to the WS, I will grant you, but I do see it. We'll need some things to break right, but you always do if you're coming back from 3-1 or 3-0.
For the sake of fun i'm going to equate this with last year's ALCS:
Matsuzaka is the 07 Beckett: dominant in winning his 2 starts
Beckett is the 07 Schilling: gets knocked around in his 1st start, but comes back strong to win game 6
Lester is the 07 Matsuzaka: loses his first start, but pitches an admirable game 7
heh, a boy can dream
* Now, that's trolling!
Congratulations to the Tampa Bay Rays, 2008 World Champions.
Why would Kazmir pitch game 5? Shields pitched the opener, it's his turn. Kazmir probably needs all the rest he can get anyway.
It was never a done deal. The only official word was that the decision would be announced after the game.
Plus, it sets up Shields to pitch game 1 of the WS if Kazmir somehow stops sucking and the Rays win game 5.
The World Series starts next Wednesday. Pitching tomorrow wouldn't preclude Shields from making that start.
Kazmir Might Start Game 5
Will it happen? Who knows. We're going to have to beat Shields at some point. I guess if Shields pitches worse at Fenway I should want him starting Game 5, with Kazmir/Garza backing him up in 6 & 7.
So, Wed-Thur-Sat-Sun-Mon-Wed-Thur, or are they adding a couple of extra off days to get 6 and 7 on the weekend?
I confess the more I think about it, the more I think we have at least a 50/50 shot to pull this off, even if Beckett blows up again. Byrd would be on full rest for Game 6 and I doubt Tito would hesitate to yank a struggling Beckett in a "lose & go home" situation. I think Byrd can be reasonably effective if the need arises.
[/drinking from the Kool-Aid jar]
??? Kevin was banned?
After Game 2 loss, "It's just a little dirty. It's still good, it's still good"
After Game 3 loss, "It's just a little slimy. It's still good, it's still good"
After Game 4 loss, "It's just a little airborne..."
I realize you made the "drinking from the kool-aid jar" comment, and there's no technical reason that the Red Sox can't come back, but to say it's anywhere close to a 50/50 chance is a bit on the crazy side - they're down 3-1 against another very good team.
It's less ludicrous than my desperate hope that the Jays could come back from their 7 down with 17 to go situation, but it's still a pretty big long shot.
Dan gave him a 30 day vacation. I'm still not really sure why, but it is what it is.
Wow, I had no idea it was that long until game 1. That's absurd.
The last 2 games were in Boston. The Red Sox were definitely the better team. Neither of those things is true in this case (with Lowell out and Ortiz ineffective).
we also had schilling going in game six, and that was one of those games/pitchers you just *knew* we were gonna win.
of course, that's how i felt about lester for game 4, so what the hell do i know =P
we'll find out if dicek is made of sterner stuff, or if this really has just been a year-long fluke.
edit...I'd go with Byrd in game six...or at least have him ready to relieve Beckett at the first hint of trouble.
You cannot risk losing a series in 6 games and have your best pitcher throw just once.
I don't expect the redsox to go quitely into the night. They are resourceful, and seem to play there best with their backsup against the wall. My Ms. Low Standards and I will be in town for game 5, and fully expect the Sox to pull it out, hopefully in a 14 inning affair with Lil Dust capping it with a walkoff ding donger and some dirty water.
I have a list of thing's thankful for this season, but I'll save it until the season is over. Which I hope won't be until closer to Nov.
Congratulations to the Tampa Bay Rays, 2008 World Champions.
Check the game 3 chatter.
if so, I hope Lester's starting it for Boston ... unless right now Theo and Terry are watching beckett throw a side session w/ a radar gun showing 97's and 98's
The quality drops off pretty quickly after the top handful, though, and it's mostly pitching - Davis and Hellickson are the only guys who are likely to contribute soon.
-- MWE
Including 237 pitches, 9 walks and 12 Ks in those 5 innings, it'll be a stomach churning, eyeball burning ride.
The one thing I will say is that its nice to see most of you being positive. Even the guys trolling are being kind, its like a lovefest....we definitely need Kevin back.
Lester must start game 6 if we get that far, there is no discussion about this. And if we make game 7, I'd pull Beckett after the first homerun he gives up and utilise Byrd.
I figure the Rays should have no problems trading some pitching for offense this offseason, if needed
Valid point, however from where I'm sittin', that offense is looking pretty sweet right now.
we have mutha-effin game 5 tonight
in all Sox ALCS's (and of course all ALDS's) whoever wins game 5, wins the series...!
Dizzy
Tampa's used up all its big hits, weve been saving them.
Francona is a very good manager, but comon, should Big Papi really be batting 3rd right now?
Rays are the odds on favorite to win the World Series right now, but I am so sick of everyone talking about them like they are the next dynasty. The 2009 Yankees are going to reload so hard, and the AL East will be a barn burner again next year, so I am skeptical whether the Rays will even make the playoffs next year. Same for the Red Sox.
The Yankees missed the playoffs this year, the Sox beat down John Lackey's LA Angels of Anaheim once again in hilarious fashion... Chone Figgins exaggerated fist pump after his triple is probably what I'll remember most about this baseball season (that good fortune lasted about 10 minutes). I'm happy with the year and content to let what happens from here on out happen. If the Rays go on to win the ALCS, they certainly earned it. Go Sox.
BTW, I loled at this. Good call.
Are you privy to information of a... personal nature?
Also, I'm nervous about tonight already. Crap.
I have no doubt that Dice-K will make this as excrutiatingly painful as possible.
Funnily enough, if we can just manage to squeak this one out, I'm pretty confident about Lester in game 6(he would be going in 6 right? sanity will prevail here...)
Then game 7 will be a free for all. It could be really fun.
Then if we pull all that out...well the Phillies will be pissing their pants and we'll take it in 5...max
You heard it hear first!
Are you sure about this? I'd much rather see Lester. Beckett right now is not inspiring alot of confidence, I don't reckon he's quite right yet.
Well I don't have any insider information. I'm just basing it on what I've seen from the Red Sox in the past two years. Regardless what moves we think they should make, the club seems disinclined to move away from its initial plan. So unless the team announces that Beckett is injured and is done for the postseason, I fully expect him to get an if-necessary Game 6 start.
I hate to say as its only the 3rd, but I think you are right. However, I have to support the Rays in the series...I'm an AL guy(with the exception of NY of course)
Wow and I mean wow, they just beat the living sh*t out of us over the course of these 3 games.
Kudos to them, well done to the Rays and their fans(all 18 of them before August). Good luck in the series.
Wow.
