Good stuff. Hopefully Schill can just keep us in the game for 6-7 innings.
Funnily enough, I think our chances against Carmona will come. The issue for me is if its close again and they get Betancourt in the game for 2+ innings. His stuff has been filthy so far.
I agree with Darren - I'm scared about Game 6, probably too optimistic about the prospects for Game 7, should it get that far. No way does Jake Westbrook shut down the Red Sox in Fenway. But I have no faith in Schilling. You hope for 3 runs in 6 innings, and it's hard to argue that'd be enough against Carmona.
The legend of Josh Beckett. Now 5-2 with a 1.79 ERA in the postseason.
"Stole homefield back?" They're down a game in the series. I'm quite certain the Indians would rather be where they are -- up 3 games to 2 going on the road -- than where the Sox are.
That's in over 66 innings and includes three shutouts and only 29 hits. Beckett is a great pitcher.
He won't be required. If it goes to game 7, we will win that by at least 3 runs.
Beckett was pretty clearly the best pitcher in the AL this year. I'd argue he was the best in the majors but that's less definitive and depends on your intepretation park factors.
I know C.C. is supposed to be the front-runner for AL Cy Young winner this year, but I saw all three of his post-season starts this year, and he's looked really lost and really fat in all of them. Certainly, he got the bad matchup against Beckett in this series, but just going on their last two head-to-head meetings, Beckett seemed like the more dominant pitcher by a mile. I think Shapiro would be smart to peddle C.C. in the off-season, btw, if he cannot get Sabathia to sign a team-favorable extension and someone makes him an offer he cannot refuse.
Schilling hasn't looked good since 2004 but he has an ERA under 4 every year and like a 22-1 K/BB ratio.
I've had a totally irrational confidence about this series since I woke up today. Kind of like when I had no doubt in my mind that Derek Lowe and his ERA nearing 6 was going to beat the Yankees on two days rest a few years back.
yeah. somehow until this year i didnt know that he pitched 4 innings on 2 days rest after pitching 9 innings. it was the day of game 6 of Sox-Yankees so my focus was elsewhere.
Yes. If the home team had won every game so far, the series would be where it stands. The Sox just have to hold serve now. (No small thing, obviously, especially with Carmona/Schilling.)
Beckett throws like 92-94 in the regular season and probably throws his curve a bit less.
If he threw this well in the regular season he would probably tower above all the other pitchers in baseball like Santana did a couple years ago.
Woulda broken it, if it weren't for that Cleveland pitcher botching the throw to second.
The Sox have won two games. Both have been with Mr. Beckett on the mound. That isn't going to happen again in this series (at least not as a starter, and probably not at all). I'd say your confidence is irrational. The Indians remain solid favorites in the series -- probably about a toss-up in Game 6 and a slight underdog in a possible Game 7.
Beckett: 95.74
Burnett: 96.03
King Felix: 98.08

I'm not as confident as some of the folks around here, but how does the statement above = "Indians remain solid favorites"? Something doesn't compute.
I'd say it's a toss-up all around, giving the Indians the edge since they only have to win once.
So the Indians have a big edge.
But you're probably right. Math isn't my thing, obviously.
For what it's worth, so did JB H.
Burnett: 96.03
King Felix: 98.08

Really surprised by that. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me, but I hardly remember him ever hitting 96+ in the regular season. Maybe the NESN guns are different? Or maybe I'm just nuts.
Don't really see this happening. Francona seems to believe that if Coco was the best option in game 2, then a dozen crappy at bats since then isn't going to change anything. That's probably the right attitude to have.
Whether or not Coco was the best option for game 2 is debatable, but I'd tend to think he was
Beckett is a joy to watch pitch. But he's such a damn redas$--WTF is he yealling at Kenny Lofton for? That was totally nuts--I know they have a history, but watching the video from 2005, I'd say Josh was full of it that time too.
I'd say the Sox will 6.5-5 favorites Saturday, 8.5-5 if they get to play to Sunday: .565 x .629= .355 by my reckoning. Home field is huge, and Carmona was pretty bad last time out.
The Sox are 12-3 in elimination games since 1999, the Tribe 1-7 in games they've had the chance to KO the other guys since 1997, IIRC, just saw this on ESPN.
As the numbers indicate, he does hit 96 very often. I think I've seen him hit 92 once but that could have been a too-muscled-up changeup. Every one of his fastballs usually has prime 95 velocity, even when he struggles. No, the reason he struggles in the regular season has more to do with command of his curveball. Sometimes he doesn't have it and his fastball gets shelled.
Maybe next season will be the one he turns in a knockout year with an ERA+ of 180 or above. He's got to have one of those types of seasons within him before his career is over. Still, him getting it done in the postseason makes all that seem irrelevent right now.
Lu's water broke after the Youks home run, and the rest as they say is ...HISTORY!!!
Victoria & Eleanor are healthy as of course is Lu.
Go Sox
Becket - wow!!
Drew put a good swing on the ball in the 9th while Manny is seriously on another planet, but he can hit!!!
Youks looked great and a few breaks went our way as well - hooray!!
Impressive timing by the kids to make their debut on the day of a Red Sox win, too.
YOU GOT TWINED PHIL!!! WHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
(I thought you were surprisinly quiet in Chatter last night...)
also: congratulations phil!
I agree, and I don't understand what his problem was. Was it the bat drop? Did he feel Lofton was showing him up? He watches the Red Sox when they hit, correct? Manny and the arms?
And he said something before the Lofton incident to Rivera, the 1b coach as they were both leaving the field in the second or third. whatever inning he threw at Franklin Gutierrez's head. Now, he may just have said "I didn't mean to throw directly at his head" but I don't know.
"We didn't say anything about Manny's reaction to his homer," Indians catcher Victor Matinez said. "I don't know what [Beckett] had to say to Kenny. He always does that. If you don't like it, what can you do?"
Are you f*cking kidding me? Wow!
And the Coorey dynasty lives on. Well done, Phil.
I saw that too. My first inclination was he was clearing the air, but considering it was Beckett, it might have been, "Next time I'll nail the f***er."
And congrats Phil.
Casey Blake had plenty to say about Manny's reaction after that game was over.
I didn't think there was any bad blood between these teams, but it sure looks like we're getting some now.
Beckett and Lofton have a history over Lofton's dropping his bat. This started in 2005. It's kind of silly for them to get in each other's grilles about it, but that's professional athletes for you.
I think he meant, you know, we didn't chase him down the 1b line and yell at him.
Uh...wasn't this the Jeff Weaver game? You know, the one where our manager decided that arguably the worst pitcher on the team who hadn't pitched in over 5 weeks should be brought in at a crucial juncture?
The best part, is his sinker, which they label as a splitter, and it's average velocity of 96.78. For comparison, Wang's sinker is 94.08 and Carmona's is 94.82.
How could Beckett get a loss in a game the Marlins won? No, it wasn't that game.
Just checked, it was Game 4, my bad.
How could Beckett get a loss in a game the Marlins won?
That's I was wondering.
Wonderful news Phil! God bless! Very classy, traditional name choices, BTW. Nice.

That's from post #32...and that's what the line is. Schilling is 6-7 tomorrow night.
Of course I missed the first inning so what I saw was more impressive than what really happened.
Wakefield did the same thing on Tuesday.
And everyone else in the league this year.
Put more simply, Hafner had a worse SLG this season than Placido Polanco.
Oh, and congratulations, Phil and Lu!
I still am really hoping they DL Gagne and bring in Snyder or Tavarez for these last 2 games--if either goes extras there's a good chance Gagne may have to be used, which would cause heart attacks across New England.
And aren't the baseball gods ready to take full aim at Schilling?
Happy Base Ball
Pretty clearly? Oh come on. Very arguably, yes. He was not "pretty clearly" the best pitcher in the AL by any stretch. Bedard had a better ERA+ - in less innings, yes, but his peripherals, mostly by virtue of his strikeouts, were more dominant than Beckett's. Sabathia pitched 41 more innings with an ERA+ only 2 points lower and a K/BB nearly 1 higher. John Lackey led the league in ERA+ and pitched 24 more innings than Beckett - his peripherals weren't as good, but the only thing that matters to me when talking who was the best in a given season is whether or not they were more productive, and Lackey looks to be.
There is nothing "clear" about that.
There is no way that "best" and "most productive" can ever mean the same thing.
Now that I have some time to tell what happened, I think I will...
As you all gathered Lu wasn't good from the update in chatter from myself. Her water basically broke when either Youks hit the home run,or when Manny was thrown at home. We left the house after the Manny thrown out at home play. I was desperate to know what was going and longed for the chance to email teddy,pj, fly or someone to keep me in the loop and at the same tim ekeep my little Lu calm.
I have to add here that I have an amazing friend in Sydney called Alex, who sent 43 test messages during the game. They were the only things keeping her calm during the contractions (seriously).
You won't believe me when I say this, but when Lu went in to the operating theater and the scorewas 7-1 with Paps inm, we felt safe enough to think that this game 5 was in the bag!!!
Maybe the girls have taken away all my negative thoughts, even though they still think they could do a better job than Coco!
That hormonal swing will calm down now that the baby is here.
Plus, thay are just two more Red Sox pants pissers. Big deal.
I'm telling you now, good things will happen tomorrow night for the Red Sox..
I must say, I like how the entire story of Lu's labor revolves around how it relates to the Sox game. As it should be.
Oh, I remember it, all right. Still hate that little punkass for it. He's right below the Nazi child molester serial killer on my shitelist.
Yes kids have this effect, but don't worry, it'll pass. :)
am i the only one who thinks the overall Fox broadcast is improved this year?
I think I'd agree with that. I haven't had nearly as many homicidal impulses this year, trips around the bottom of the order excepted.
TWINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
