Graduation Day

Delcarmen, Hansen, Lester, and Lopez (which one of these things is not like the others?) were called into Francona’s office yesterday and were told by Tito that the team plans to keep them in Boston. No more Pawtucket shuttle.

Lester will stick in the rotation, while the other three will join Timlin as the bridge to Papelbon. Seanez and Tavarez are going to get the garbage time, apparently.

“I talked to all of them today because I think we’re getting to the point where we’d like to keep them here, if possible, and have them carry some of that responsibility in the bullpen,” said Francona. “I wanted them to understand their responsibilities, to just be a professional, to care about winning games. I want them to pitch with confidence and to know that we’re not going to back away from them. This isn’t an instance where they have to be here. We kind of want them here.”

Francona admitted to being “a little bit excited” about the blend of young and old arms in the bullpen.

(From the Herald, though almost all the papers have the same quotes.)

Is this a good thing? I think it is. Maybe not if you are Rudy Seanez or Julian Tavarez, I suppose. As we get into midseason trade talk, the team needs to figure out which needs it can fill from within the organization and which needs it can’t.

Is this a good thing?

Sort of. It's a good thing in that the young guys could be an improvement over the crappy veterans, but a bad thing in that the crappy vets are so crappy that they have to bring the young guys up. And it's not like Seanez, Tavarez, and Foulke are cheap, either.

It's pretty cool how the Sox have a nice little crop of exciting young players this year. Youkilis, Crisp, Papelbon, Beckett, and now we'll see Lester and Hansen.

Tito will be on the radio live at WEEI.com at noon today or so...I'll see if he clarifies all this stuff.

What, Kyle Snyder did not get the same vote of confidence?

Has any man suffered so much abuse as Kyle Snyder?

Btw...

Jon Lester was good today. He was throwing strikes.

That being said, Washington helped him today by swinging, and by not making contact on some pitches. Lester need to work out some control problems.... not the "Matt Clement can't find the striek zone" problem, but "it's a strike but not where Varitek wanted it" type of control problem.

Still, he's got good velocity on the fastball and that curveball is getting people to swing. And he's throwing strikes.

Which is all I can ask for.

All I have to say about Lester: last night Rodrigo Lopez pitched 7 innings against the Nationals, giving up 1 run, walking no one, and striking out 7. Rodrigo Lopez. And I was there--he had nothing at all.

JoelW,
Check your email. Time is somewhat important for a variety of reasons.
