Bowden 2 IP, 1 H, 1 bb, 1 K so far.
Beazley has followed Lester with 4 perfect innings of his own. 2 Hits for Jason Place in that game.
Hansen 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K.
Another 2 hit game for Moss. He must be having one of his good months.
Bard gets knocked around in his debut at High A. Cox relievers him for 3 IP, 0 ER, 3 BB, and 4 K.
Lars 2/4 with a 2B in Greenville.
Hansen 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K.
wow! both those lines are promising.
that's tim not bryce.
His results last year weren't so dominant that he's a lock to do well in the majors. Tavarez put up a 103 ERA+, which makes him a pretty credible 5th starter.
I think giving Hansack a 1/2 year+ in AAA is probably wise.
Also, Lancaster is a complete joke. It's going to be two years of hell following that squad.
You said it was a joke before, but I thought that was because they'd be tough to follow on the west coast. Is the park/league super hitter-friendly?
In addition to Bell, Daeges is also hitting over .500.
kevin's got a new mancrush, a 24 year old lefty in a ball park that loves left handed hitters...
Yes, the league is super hitter-friendly, and Lancaster is the hitter-friendliest park in the league, by at about 20 % or so. Furthermore, Lancaster is extremely nice to left handed hitters.
So far so good. It's early though. Just wait for the summer heat. For Bowden's sake, the Sox will have lifted him to AA by then.
Another left handed hitters who's far too old for the league...
[kevin]
You gotta love those overrated prospects with Lancaster-inflated stats...

Carlos Gonzalez in 2006:
Home- .361/.414/.693
Road- .239/.295/.433
Yes Darren. The Lancaster situation is a joke because the park is beyond absurd. It's a terrible situation for both hitters and pitchers to develop in.
Yup, I'm well aware of that home/road split. In many ways, CGon's 2006 stats are fairly meaningless to me; I've stopped giving any thought to the batting or pitching stats of AZ's prospects until they get to AA. This might be a "no s##t" statement, but I'm a lot more interested in seeing what Carlos does in Mobile this year than thinking about what he did in Lancaster last year.
Fwiw, I made this same argument here a few months ago, and kevin really took an issue to my posts.
I'm just happy that the Dbacks are out of Lancaster...
Man, it's tough being an editor.
It's only terrible for analysts who are trying to glean some realistic projections from the inflated statistics. I'm not sure it hurts anybodys development. If it did, then everybody here should really hate it when prospects choose to go to college, where aluminum bats are allowed, and vehemently criticize the drafting of college players high in the draft.
Bowden is going to be in Lancaster how long? Like 3 months, tops? I hardly think that's going to have any effect on his development at all.
Suit yourself.
The entire high A article was a mess... and full of wrong information. Just a couple of examples that come to mind... He had Brooks Brown listed as a closer (Brown is in the rotation) in Visalia; and had Ryan Doherty as a left handed pitcher (Doherty is a righty).
I don't expect Goldstein to know everything about every prospect, but some fact checking won't hurt
There's actually a "block this poster" feature now. That's the only way this is going to happen for you. Sorry--my powers are useless in this situation.
Wow, what a difference from recent years, when nobody seemed capable of slugging .400 for our High-A team.
Besides, there were wind advisories tonight in Lancaster with gusts over 50 mph. I'm not saying he would have been much better, but I'll give him a couple months of Lancaster to get used to it.
He's getting his work in, and that's all that matters. I gather the Sox aren't interested in whether he's dominating the competition right now as much as whether he's regaining his form.
How much did the Red Sox offer Alvarez? And when is he draft eligible, 2008? Any bets on whether he's the first hitter taken in the draft?
Also, TempleUSox, where do you see Todd Frasier drafted this year? Mid-first round? Higher? What about your white whale, Mr. Jason Bay The Second?
He can do that in Portland, where he'll be closer to the doctors who treated him.
Levski:
I've heard the Sox offered him between 800 and 900K. He is draft-eligible next year and there's a very good chance he is the 1st hitter taken. However Allan Dykstra and Justin Smoak are sure giving him a run for his money. I've actually been somewhat disappointed with PA this season. He hasn't made The Leap that I expected. He's still #11 in the country in OPS, but when I've watched him it looked like he as pressing and a little over-anxious to swing. He still has a year left, so hopefully he can make it an Alex Gordon-esque junior year.
Jared Prince has had a very rough sophomore campaign, which he pins on the draft-pressure surrounding him. I would still like the Sox to take him sometime and try to sign him. Everyone yawned when the Indians took Tim Lincecum as a draft-eligible sophomore in 2005.
I think Todd Frazier will be a 1st round pick. He is turning into one of the best collegiate position players, in an admittedly weak year for collegiate position players. He will shift to 3B or OF in the pros, but he has the bat to do it. He also has excellent pedigree, both in his blood and where he is from.
Lousy game for Buchholz tonight: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 HR, 1 BB, 2 K. Outpitched by my old fav. Brad Baker!
Andrew Brackman
Matt Wieters
Jake Arietta
Julio Borbon
Josh Fields
Matt Laporta
Wynn Pelzer
Rick Porcello
Matt Harvey
Greg Peavey
Mike Moustakas
Kentrail Davis
That's a list of the Scott Boras clients in this year's draft. This is about as talented a list of clients I have seen of his in any draft. There are 4 potential top 10 picks and everyone else should go before the 2nd round. Scott Boras Inc. is going to have a busy two months.
For next year's draft, this is a list of the college players who I would tag "top-level talent."
Pedro Alvarez
Justin Smoak
Brian Matusz
Allan Dykstra
Yonder Alonso
Jordan Danks
Jacob Thompson
Aaron Shafer
Brandon Crawford
Jemile Weeks
Zach Putnam
Tyson Ross
Petey Paramore
Ike Davis
I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but the point is that the only two players in this year's draft who I would put on par with this list is David Price and Matt Wieters. I don't know if that says more about this year's draft or next year's.
Buchholz's game wasn't the great game we were looking for, but it wasn't a disaster, either. Not too worried.
As a first baseman, Natale's now officially an organizational soldier. Sounds like a real good guy, so he's got that going for him, which is nice. The Sox seem to have more players than usual in the minors for whom there's at least hope that they're not organizational players - guys like Negron and Fernandez Oliva behind the actual prospects and draft pick guys. That's fun.
(Sorry about the hijack)
Do you still think that Prince will be the next Jason Bay, despite his lousy year? :)
Why not try him in the OF? Or leave him at 2B and see if he can improve to almost passable. He'd only be blocking Zach Borowiak.
Does he have the arm to play 3B? If so, I'm surprised they haven't used him there before. I still hold out hope for him. He needs hit well and with power this year to have a chance to move up though. At age 24 in AA, what kind of line would make him a semi-respectable hitting prospect? .310/.400/.480, with his usual excellent BB/K ratio? Better?
That line sounds about right. The Eastern League was the most pitching-friendly league in the minors last year, so that would be a pretty impressive line. He'll still need a position in the end, though.
What are you talking about? He was great in AA last year. His WHIP, K/9 and K/BB were all topnotch.
If he keeps pitching like this, they just have to call him up. They just have to.
i think this hansack guy could make a good setup man for papelbon.
With all of our high-quality relievers, I think this could be a difficult task.
and not a padres uniform this time.
If he immediately reverts to 2006-translated quality, ok, sure. But this is a guy whose stuff got raves in spring, and who's pitching like a crazy man in AAA. I'm saying that I think it's pretty likely this is a major league pitcher, and the Red Sox could really use a major league pitcher. I think - though obviously I could be wrong - that the Sox ought to make a move. I also expect that they will.
It's two starts! Do you really think there's any reasonable chance he'll be pitching nearly this well by midseason?
For all the raves, he threw 12.2 IP with 8 Ks, 2 BBs, and 1 HR against who knows what kind of competition. I know you're very into the observational thing these days, but a guy who is busting down the door to the majors and drawing raves should probably be able to K more than 6 / 9 IP.
Don't you think he's mostly likely to end up somewhere a lot closer to his 2006 translated quality (which is pretty damn mediocre) than his 23 IP at AAA/ST this year?
Maybe they will make a move soon, but I don't see them risking losing Snyder (or someone else) until they're pretty damn sure he's turned a corner. I don't think they'll wait as long as they did with Arroyo, but midseason seems quite reasonable. If in late June he's still above 10 K/9 with other good peripherals, he'll be up.
This man can pitch in the majors right now. He should be our 5th starter.
I'm assuming you've seen a fair amount of this guy--do you have a scouting report you'd like to share? How many of his pitches are major league quality? Which ones?
Do you think he wore down in the 2nd half last year or was it a fluke?
Thanks in advance.
I certainly could be wrong. I'm not very good at my own observation, and there's a lot of good evidence that Hansack's true production level is in the range of mediocre.
I guess where the rubber hits the road is what we say about the Red Sox decisions. I'm saying I think he'll be up in early to mid-May, because I think the Red Sox also think he's really good. I'm saying that if Hansack keeps pitching awesome and doesn't get the call until June/July, I'll be able to say I think I was right. I'm saying that if Hansack tails off quick in AAA, I'm probably wrong. That's fair, right?
Like Arroyo, he can throw his breaking balls for strikes in any count and they make his fastball play up.
I don't know what you mean by if he wore down in the 2nd half of last year. It's possible. Can you expand on that?
I was going to say the same thing. Grady Little should have been beaten with wet branches for not realizing how much he could have contributed.
Yeah, it's fair. But how awesome does he have to pitch and how soon do you want him called up. What if over the next month he throws 5 GS, 28 IP, 28 K, 9 BB, 3 HR, 3.00 ERA. Does that earn the automatic callup and the permanent dismissal of someone (and if so, who)?
Also, if anyone is advocating bringing up Hansack and getting rid of Romero this very instant, I agree!
What does everyone make of Delcarmen? 6 IP, 4 H, 10 K, 3 BB, 1 HR. Lots of Ks and few hits but not too hot on the other numbers.

He didn't slow down. He just had a off month in July. If you consider his August numbers and his 5 inning no-hitter in the bigs, you could make a much better case that he figured something out and is on target to be a real contributer.
Can we also include the game where he pitched 5 innings and gave up 2 HR? When you narrow it down to only counting the good months and the no-hitters, guys tend to look pretty good. :)
His walk rate in August was excellent, though.
Well, he only had one bad month so I don't think I'm guilty of cherrypicking. If anything, I think you're the one who's guilty of cherrypicking by focusing on his rare failures rather than his typical performance.

oops
Lancaster.
kevin:
I think they just need to work on stretching him out more. Excellent performance, but just 5 IP at AAA translates to something less in MLB. If they're planning to bring him up to pitch out of the pen, I guess it wouldn't matter much.
