Is an Ellsbury/Coco Deal on the Horizon?

With Johan Santana apparently headed for Queens, the Red Sox no longer need to hang on to both Jacoby Elllsbury and Coco Crisp. Does this mean that one of them will soon be on the way out of town? I forget who, but someone keeps mentioning the ChiSox as a possible partner, being as they need a CF and could part with Carlos Quentin. I’m kind of stumped otherwise, although maybe the Dodgers will do something foolish. I do, however, think one of these guys will be on the move before the season starts, as both are at least capable starters and could bring back value in other spots.

Sidenote: The Red Sox picked up David Aardsma from Chicago for Willy Mota and Miguel Socolovich. The Sox didn’t give up much and he had nice K rates in AAA and MLB last year, so it seems pretty reasonable.

AFAIK.

I think that Theo has clearly stated that he's fine going into camp and let them battle it out. What holes do we currently have to fill? None. Are there question marks? Yes. Will Manny bounce back? If not then giving Crisp up leaves us a hole in the outfield for 2009. If he does then we'll probably pick up his option makeing either Crisp or Ellsbury superfluous. Similarly does Lugo bounce back? Is Lowrie ready or will he be later in the season? My dream scenario is that Manny bounces back, Lowrie develops and we trade Crisp and Lugo for a decent prospect. Coco Crisp is arguably the best player at his position defensively speaking, and CF is a position where defense is arguably more valuable than most others. To give him up for pennies on the dollar is foolish. Similarly, if Lugo returns to form . Trades for the Red Sox are different than for other major league teams. There are no glaring holes to be filled, in fact we have excess, as evidenced by our 6 man rotation and our 4 man outfield. Theo stated last year that he's more concerned with the team we finish the season with than we start, and I think his approach to this particulalrly outfield reflects that. Hopefully in mid June, Lugo and crisp are tearing it up, along with Manny and we get fair value for them so we can let the young guns play. I can't wait for the season to start.

If Lugo and Crisp are "tearing it up" they won't be traded. The Sox aren't going to deal away guys who are playing really well and replace them with unknown quantities. They'll try and ride those "tearing it up" performances into the playoffs.

I agree with your other points, and I'm a fan of Coco's D, but I think this is a stretch - I'm not even 100% sure he's the best defensive CF on the team.

There's a small mention of Coco Crisp and trading possibilities in the Ken Rosenthal article (linked elsewhere on this site) about the 2013 HOF ballot:

While Crisp, 28, is signed to an affordable contract — $4.75 million this season and $5.75 million next season with an $8 million club option for 2010 — the multi-year commitment works against him as prospective trade partners prefer their own younger players.

The White Sox plan to go with Nick Swisher in center and Carlos Quentin in left; the addition of Crisp would leave no spot for Quentin, whom the Sox acquired for a top hitting prospect, first baseman Chris Carter.

The Cubs do not view Crisp as a viable alternative if they fail to acquire Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts; Crisp's .329 career on-base percentage makes him ill-suited for the top of the order, and the Cubs don't want a center fielder who might block Felix Pie or Tyler Colvin; they would prefer a platoon partner such as the Rangers' Marlon Byrd.

The Twins are just as reluctant to impede Gomez, and the Reds are in a similar position with Jay Bruce.

As a White Sox fan, it's nice to see the team planning on going with Swisher in CF and Quentin in LF. Hope that's true. I'm not opposed to a Crisp trade if Konerko is moved (in trade) and Swisher takes ovr 1B, but it doesn't make sense for Chicago right now.

i don't understand this. would you also like to see your favorite team ... i dunno ... play paul konerko at 3b and jim thome at 1st? or how about trying konerko out at short and moving thome back to 3rd? then you can sign somebody like erubiel durazo or roberto petagine to play first!

Durazo can play OF. Konerko can catch.

OK, so you don't think that Swisher can handle CF defensively. In fact, you imply that it's ridiculous to even think that he could play CF (despite the fact that he played almost 500 innings there for the A's last season).

Anything to back that up?

i don't think it's ridiculous to think that he *could play CF* ... just that he's pretty likely to be bad with an upside of mediocre. i don't get why it's such an exciting proposition for players to play positions that they aren't likely to be good at.

i suppose it isn't a big deal though ... between konerko, dye, and thome, there should be plenty of games with spots open at 1b/rf/dh for swisher to move to.

Because the alternative is Jerry Owens or Brian Anderson in CF and Quentin riding the bench?

Ah yes, the Chicago Cubs: where 'leadoff hitter' is a positon.

So the Mets have decided to trade the homeless man's Endy Chavez for the poor man's Endy Chavez? Despite already having the one-and-only Endy Chavez? Am I missing something?

I don't get this either - I mean, it'd be nice for the Red Sox to save Coco's salary, but it's not like he's this giant albatross that's preventing other moves.

He's the switch-hitting Endy Chavez.

Angel Pagan is certainly not giving up anything of value. The fact that Crisp is a switch-hitter certainly helps, since they really could use someone out there who can hit lefties to complement Ryan Church, and play CF as insurance for Beltran if/when Endy needs to fill in for Alou. Is that worth taking on Crisp's $$$? Well, I'm not paying for it. Fine by me.

Well, that seems pretty pointless.
