Lester up, Pineiro DFA’ed

I don’t have much to say about this except:

--DFA’ing Pineiro a few months after committing $4 mil to him makes the front office look awfully foolish, unless they have a good trade lined up involving Pineiro.

--Buchholz and Lobsterman appear to be better options than Lester.

--Do Snyder and Lopez really have more value than Pineiro? Particularly when the latter can be sent to the minors?

No kidding. How come the Royals rolled over and played dead for the Yankees?

We did not help ourselves.

It will be a help if Julian Tavarez doesn't start any more games.

That is true. It would also help if Terry Franona didn't think he was smart and tried to use TACTICS ROLFCOPTER!!!

Dammit Offense get your krap together.

I did a quick glance at our remainin schedule of 60 games. We gotta go 40-20 to guarentee a playoff spot. (this way we finish with 100 wins)

Optimistically, we look like we could win 34 of those 60 games. That'll put us as 95 wins. 95 wins won't do it ladies and gentlemen. If we go .500 we're screwd

I think 95 wins is a probable playoff berth. I think the odds are against NYY AND [(DET AND CLE) or (ANA AND SEA)] each winning 95.

Trouble is that 34-26 is better than the Sox have been playing for the last two months.

3 and 1 vs. the Indians will be sweet however...

Papi is just not right
Drew can't sustain any form at the plate for more than 3 days
Youks has lost all form of power and is slapping single only
Varitek is going to tire and mirrabelli well...

These are the guys we need hitting for extra bases to score runs, then we don't have to ####### carry on with this hit and run crap for starters.

The pitching rules though!!!

I look at things differently. I don't think the Sox going 34-26 is optimistic. I think that's worst case scenario. Maybe I'll be wrong, but I think Schilling will pitch similar to the way he pitched in 2004. That would give the Sox 3 aces, the best bullpen in the AL, along with one of top 4 offenses in the AL. If that's the case, I am not worried about making the playoffs.

I'm usually pretty pessimistic and you guys are worse than me.

Just for fun, from The Star-Ledger:

"The Yankees have been calling a few teams to see if they'd be interested in taking center fielder Johnny Damon off their hands. One of those teams is the Braves, whose answer (according to an official with one of the teams involved, who requested anonymity because he was talking about deals that weren't completed) was that they liked Damon, 'but not at that price.' Damon is signed through 2009 at $13 million per season, and if the Yankees were to trade him, which they technically could if they believe Jason Giambi is coming back soon from his foot injury, they'd probably have to chip in a good chunk of that salary. That, along with Damon's limited no-trade clause, makes it unlikely the Yankees would deal him, but it sure is interesting that they've looked into it...."

As for the pessimism/optimism... Sox are still in the catbird's seat (or whatever that phrase is, and whatever it means). Some great pitching duels with Cleveland the past couple of days, even if the baserunning tonight was infuriating.

I wasn't in Chatter but I think trying to make things happen on the basepaths and manufacturing runs is a defensible strategy if you're locked in a pitchers duel where hits and especially extra base hits figure to be scarce.

agreed, but i think the right move was to pinch run with lugo when varitek got on. then when cora is up you can pinch hit with lowell and then put mirabelli in to catch.
