Desmond is a fairly no-account prospect in the eyes of the Nats FO (and fanbase), a guy who has a decent glove but an inability to put it together with the bat last I checked. Of course maybe the D-Backs see something in him that the Nats have missed.

So all it took to land Pena was Emilio Fruto? If Dayton Moore was ready to give up Leo Nunez for Milton Bradley, you'd think he could have parted with Leo or a similar pitcher (Jimmy Gobble?) for Wily Mo Pena, a much superior and healthier player who is not a FA this winter, unlike Bradley.

I will openly confess I was and remain baffled. Especially after his 2007 finish in WA I figured WMP to hit 20 by accident even with a .230ish BA since the Nats didn't really have other options.

But he collapsed. Actually, collapsed is understating what happened....

No doubt that your bet is looking better than ever Biv. But Wily Mo is 27 in 09. If I were on the other end of your bet, I'd want another 3-4 years before I conceded defeat.

I tried to make a bet with Hutcheson and 2 other people regarding Lowe vs. Perez thinking the latter would sign somewhere soon after the form; only I never figured on the Beckett-like quality of this off-season. I don't even remember who else I was offering the bet to.

Alright, I'm a reasonable man. How about after 2 full years of no MLB AB's, the bet is over? That way, it can get strung out another decade (at most).

Problem is the Nats have eleventy corner outfielders. Could be tough to get to 600 PAs. Especially since he's, uh, terrible.

The terms are that the bet timeline ends if Pena gets a majority of ABs in the minors. I'll stand by it.

It's kind of outside the parameters of the bet if he does go to Japan. Should we turn it into an o/u on his NPB homer total? I'll take 40 homers and over.

Now Japan may be his only option. I don't know what the quality of pitching is over there, top to bottom, so I'm not sure if HR's he hits in Japan mean much.
