Wily Mo Pena Traded to Washington

According to ESPN, Washington acquired outfielder Wily Mo Pena and cash considerations from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named. This deal reunites Wily Mo with Jim Bowden, who previously traded for Pena while GM of the Reds.

Without a doubt, the trade for Pena must be classified as a failure. As you know, Bronson Arroyo has pitched very well for the Reds. Although Pena showed flashes of talent, the Sox could never find consistent playing time or a role for him. Since the National farm system is pretty putrid, it’s likely the Sox ultimate compensation for Arroyo won’t even amount to a handful of magic bean. Since I fully expect to see Pena hitting 35+ homers in Washington, it looks like the Sox front office will end up being out maneuvered in this series of deals by both the Reds and Nationals.

Desmond is a fairly no-account prospect in the eyes of the Nats FO (and fanbase), a guy who has a decent glove but an inability to put it together with the bat last I checked. Of course maybe the D-Backs see something in him that the Nats have missed.

3 way deal done

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Nationals traded right-hander Emiliano Fruto to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday for prospect Chris Carter, who then was shipped to the Boston Red Sox to complete last week's deal that sent outfielder Wily Mo Pena to Washington.

Bellhorn was OK. He was no Pedroia, but far better than Todd Walker or Mark Loretta.

So all it took to land Pena was Emilio Fruto? If Dayton Moore was ready to give up Leo Nunez for Milton Bradley, you'd think he could have parted with Leo or a similar pitcher (Jimmy Gobble?) for Wily Mo Pena, a much superior and healthier player who is not a FA this winter, unlike Bradley.

Milton Bradley is a better player than Wily Mo Pena. Heck, Milton Bradley might already be better than Pena could ever become.

Wily Mo didn't walk OR homer tonight. In a double-digit scoring effort by the Nats. Very disappointing.

Wily Mo's out for 4 weeks with an oblique strain.
