Philly’s Big Study of Pitcher Durability

Over on SOSH, our pal Philly has posted a very illuminating study of durability among FA pitchers. He starts with Derek Lowe and then moves into a discussion of other guys who have been signed to multi-year deals in recent years. There’s also a section on pitchers that will be available this coming offseason.

I’m not sure what conclusion to draw from the work. One think I think it shows is that Clement was a very reasonable signing at the time. And Philly’s point, that durability may be a bit undervalued by us Johnny-statboys, is also probably true. But overall, when I look down that list, it seems to me that trying to figure out who’s going to be healthy is a pretty tough thing. I think you probably have to just pick the guys who’ve been healthy for a while and hope for the best.

Does this info change anyone’s mind about who the Sox should pursue this offseason? I still like Mussina and Pettitte to be good values.

Its a good study with some good points. I guess when I look at the Sox, and I look at the free agents, and I think about 2007, the one word that comes into my head is "quanity." Ironic as it may seem now, the starting pitching depth we thought we had heading into 2006 was supposed to be a real strength for the Sox. It didn't work out that way, but it doesn't mean that pitching depth isn't really, really good (as Philly's study indirectly affirms). So Zito, Schmidt, Matsuzaka? I say yes! And more! As we successfully integrate more salary-controlled players into our 25 man roster (e.g. Youks, Lester, Delcarmen, etc.), I am certainly hoping we leverage the large chunk of cash left in Theo's budget on pitching, durable and talented.

Side note: Remember back in the post-2004 off-season how what Theo really did want to do was sign Pedro to a two year deal? And now at the end of 2006 Pedro needs surgery... Sharp guess.

I think he tore the rotator cuff while trying to pitch through the leg injuries. The Red Sox would never have let him do that.

Yeah, they would have let him tear the rotator cuff before injuring his leg.

The Red Sox would never let any pitcher take the mound if they weren't healthy. Except for Schilling, Wells, Clement...
