Red Sox Sweep Yankees (and get Dougie back)

David Ortiz delivers a key homer in each game and Paps closed ‘em all out. Doesn’t get any better than this.

I have to say, I’m pretty surprised that people are saying that the Red Sox got some kind of steal on the Mirabelli deal. ZIPS has Mirabelli pegged for .228 .315 .386 (SD) in 06 and Bard for .260 .323 .393 (CLEV). Both guys have good defensive reputations, but Bard is seven years younger, cheaper, and under control longer.

From the Padres perspective, a straight up trade of these two would have to be considered a pretty nice deal. But they knew that the Red Sox desperately needed Mirabelli back, because Bard just wasn’t able to catch the knuckler. So they managed to pry free a C prospect (according to Sickels) and cash as well. The Padres made out very well and the Red Sox overpaid, but got something that they needed.

I’m happy with the deal because I think it’s something the Red Sox needed to do, but I don’t think it was a bargain. Far from it.

(I put this thread up because the news item disintegrated into a p***ing match. Hopefully, we can keep this one about how the trade affects the Sox.)

Meanwhile, tonight's rainout makes Francona's decision to use Papelbon last night look like genius, don't you think?

(Well, genius might be overstating it a bit.)

I tend to agree that this was more of a "win" for the Padres than the Sox. That said, the Sox are trying to win now, and Bard shoring up the backup catcher spot for a few years was not exactly crucial. Not a steal by any means, but a decent, though perhaps desperate, trade by the Sox.

I think the Mirabelli/Loretta trade might still be coloring people's perceptions. The weirdness of that just doesn't go away (though if Loretta's bat doesn't pick up it might, I guess).

Well, and I'm being semifacetious/semiserious here, Francona has bad knees, no? Maybe he could feel in his bones the coming rain. IIRC, Joe and Jerry ssaid that Jonathan was warming up before the Ortiz smash. May as well use him. And he was facing Rodriguez, Matsui, and Posada. It wasn't like he was facing Cano, Cairo, and Crosby.

Papelbon sure gave ARod the time on Monday, eh?
