Red Sox Welcome Two Mystery Coaches into the Fold

As already noted in a news thread, the Red Sox are ‘close’ to hiring John Farrell to be there pitching coach. There is also a report in the Globe that they have inked Dave Magadan as some sort of coach, although no one seems sure what yet.

I have virtually no opinion on these two moves. The only thing that sticks out is that one guy (Farrell) seems to be a Francona guy while the other (Magadan) isn’t. I think that indicates that the FO is using his input, but not giving him free reign.

Magadan will be the "The Next Wade Boggs Coach".

I truly thought the appearance on Cribs would be the last time I saw Dave Magadan.

What's a "Wade Boggs Coach?" Am I missing a joke?

Glad to see you're alive Toby and Temple. This place has been dead.

Is this the Farrell who is coming over from the Indians? If so, I heard an an on-air interview with him during one of the Twins-Indians games the last 2 weeks of the season that shared a lot of his organizational philosophy. Anyone with MLB.TV might want to check it out and try to find it.

Were you thinking of making a Scott Cooper joke, Toby?

Yes, that's the guy, Will. In the other thread, several people mentioned how interesting he was to listen to.

Talk about trying to find a need in a haystack. At least you told us which teams were involved.

Wait until we get Johan Santana for Jeff Corsaletti, the Y in Jacoby Ellsbury's first name, and naming rights to the GCL Sox bullpen wall. That'll pump some life into the place.

That will be the rumored deal. It will turn out to be Tito Santana for Ellsbury's full self and both of the B boys.

FWIW, Magadan and Lou Piniella are cousins. So maybe Dave's a Hispanic guy.

The general consensus in Cleveland was that Farrell was in line for a big Front Office job somewhere not a coaching job. It is a collective WTF.

when Dave Magadan came up, he was touted as "The Next Wade Boggs". I went to college in Mets country at a time when the Mets were good and Magadan was in the pipeline and all my college buddies were Mets fans, so this is burned into my memory.

So yes, it's an attempt at a joke, which perhaps only my college friends would truly understand.

What do you guys know about baseball, anyway? You thought Coco was a leftfielder!

Boy, it's quiet in here.

Mike Fine at the Patriot Ledger has a nice piece on Farrellhere.

Looks like a sound move to me.

It just hit me that Sean Burroughs is a poor man's Dave Magadan.

According to the Hartford Courant today, Magadan has been named the new hitting coach.

It's more that Kevin Youkilis is Dave Magadan.
