Schilling’s Road to Recovery

Curt Schilling pitched a rehab start for AAA Pawtucket tonight and by all accounts was dominating: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 66 pitches. According to NESN reports, he hit 93 on the gun as well. To an outsider to me, that looks like he’s ready to go. Yet NESN reports that he will have another rehab outing on the 7/31 before returning to the rotation.

Why bother? He’s likely going to throw in the 80+ pitch range, so you might as well have him doing it in the majors so that we can avoid another debacle like the one tonight. In fact, because of the off day, they could skip both of their rookie pitchers this turn through the rotation.

Maybe I’m being too aggressive here, but I feel a slight sense of urgency and I feel like the Red Sox leadership is behaving as if the East is sewn up.

I'm surprised, I just assumed that Schilling would make two rehab starts. I mean, I guess this is better than the jackassed "who needs rehab?" theory they put into practice with Wells and Schill a year or two ago, but it's odd.

The rookies have been pitching well, but I don't see Gabbard shutting down many good offenses, and I'm ready for Schilling to take his place. (Gabbard's margin for error is teensy. I could see him putting together some Doug Davis-y seasons down the line, but I don't think now is the time. I'd go with Lester.)

Gabbard's a tough one to read, but the obvious conclusion is that he's a fringy guy who strung together a few good starts. Maybe he'll actually be better than that, but I see no reason to think it's likely. And it's not like the Indians' wonderful offense pummeled him tonight. He simply fell apart.

In fairness, everyone falls apart now and then. By the way, thanks a bunch to the Red Sox for keeping the Tigers in first place this week.

Yes, everyone falls apart sometimes. It's just that Gabbard's pedigree is that of a fringy guy and his performance thus far hasn't really changes that.

Pretty excited about Schilling. I kind of felt like there was a 30%'ish chance he was toast for the year, which would have made it pretty likely he's toast for good or doesn't come back. Looks like he'll be back to being Schilling this year, which should make it pretty easy for everyone to get a deal done for next year.

Gabbard's stock has risen this year, but I don't think a team is ever going to feel good in Spring Training if he's their #5 starter.

This is at least the second time Gabbard fell apart this season with the Big Club, and IIRC, his walk rate is ~4 for his minor's career.

i don't think gabbard is "fringy" ... that implies his performance is on the border of major league-quality. his performance has been very firmly on one side or the other. his problem is that he is prone to losing his arm slot. if he can stop doing that, i think he could be a solid major leaguer for a long time.

When Schilling comes back I want Theo to buy Mike Timlin a farm so there would be a place to dispose of the the corpse.

Timlin looked fine last night in his first inning. As usual, though, he fell apart after 15 pitches. Unfortunately, he seems to be the only pitcher that Tito thinks can throw 2 IP.

It was fun seeing Delcarmen come in the game after it was already decided and blow away two batters.
