Spring Is in the Air

Yesterday was the first time I actually caught some spring training action on TV. I saw Beckett looking very, very good against a mostly Major League lineup. This spring he’s got 24 K, 4 BB, and 1 HR allowed (!) in 23.2 IP. It’s performances like that that make me sad that ST results usually mean very little. On the flip side, that means I don’t have to get too worked up about Lowell, Pedroia, and Ortiz at the plate, or Kevin Youkilis’s repugnant facial hair.

Have any of the players’ performances turned your head this spring, for better or for worse? Has it made you a believer in Matsuzaka or made you question the signing of Lugo? Any of the rookies caught your attention?

Ellsbury. Can run. Fun to watch.

Complete sentences. Overrated.

I think Hansack can be a real contributer, in the mold of Arroyo/2003, if given the opportunity.

I believe Beckett will be the best starting pitcher on the Red Sox roster this year. And I even think he will challenge Mr. Supernatural for the Cy Young. As long as he doesn't take diet advice from Schilling.

Any word on whether Beckett is starting his own blog, by the way? Maybe "38 Blisters"? j/k

Youks is gonna have a big year.
I'm worried about the catchers.
Color me skeptical with regard to Tavarez starting.
I'm worried Lowell's production might fade considerably.
I'm really psyched to watch Dice-K, although he seems to work slowly. His Spring ERA is 2.04!
The "knuckleball thing", and its attendant requirement of Dougie, is another serious problem.
I'm still worried about Papi's heart palpitations and Lester's cancer.
Drew should be fine, as should be Lugo, and kevin's little mancrush.
If Coco hits up to his ZIPS I'll be really pleased.
The other Japanese guy, the lefty reliever, has looked pretty good. Just about all of the pitchers have had themselves real nice Springs.
CHB can be emailed, you know. He asnswers them fairly often.

Oh, you're no fun.

Yeah, me too. He looked so terribly awful last year that it's hard to believe he could ever hit. Sort of how I feel about any reliever the Sox pick up.

Remy was going on and on about Beckett's change in the postgame I saw. I didn't actually see Beckett pitch, so I can't speak to it, but Remy was saying that Beckett was throwing the change at 83-84, which is a solid 5 mph slower than he threw it last year. That'd be a totally different pitch.

I think the pitching's gonna be incredible. I don't know so much about the rest of the team, but I think that the starters and Papelbon are going to carry them to and through the playoffs. Spring kicks ass.

In watching Beckett, I was more impressed with the life on his fastball and the break and command on his breaking pitch. Didn't notice the change.

Cut it out, MAtt. You're giving me a chubby.

From the little I've seen, Crisp and Tek have been awful, and Hansen has been hideous. Otherwise, it's all good.

So, Javier Lopez got the last bullpen spot? Was that expected? How many lefties in the pen do we have now? Three?

Yeah, three. That's what Theo said on the radio broadcast of today's game. One of them goes down when Timlin comes back. Epstein's reasoning is that KC and Seattle have some lefty hitters, plus he wants Delcarmen to get some steady work.

I would have thought it would be Delcarmen. I wonder if options were a factor.

He had a crappy spring too, McGriff.
