The Future of Manny

Manny Ramirez got off to a torrid start, and it appeared that his intense offseason work had helped him return to his former greatness. But even while he was hitting well, Manny was striking out more and walking less than he had in the past. Now, those problems seem to have caught up to him. Manny’s now back around the decreased level he was at last year:

07: .296 .388 .493
08: .280 .364 .489

That’s an awfully pedestrian line in his last ~800 PA. The good news is that Manny’s defense looks like it has improved a bit this year. But with Abreu, Dunn, and Burrell out there for the taking, it doesn’t look like a slam dunk that they will pick up Manny’s $20 mil. option.

Manny is currently 10th in the league in OPS+. is the 10th best hitter worth 20m short money when that player is a well known and liked member of the local 9?

If the local 9 is the Boston Red Sox, then yes.

Weren't we like 13.5 games up at this time last year?

Please don't say local 9--bad NESN association. I guess the drop in production this year has masked some of Manny's hitting value. Not sure if that makes him worth his deal or not, but it's got to be reasonably close.

We were a scant 10.5 games up on the day shown via your link, pallie.

And besides, the big lead steadily trending toward "erode" as the weeks crawled by made for a less than ideal
second half of the season, IMHO.

Let's come off the pace, Wottle-like, for once?

(fantastic race, BTW)
