The Market for Manny

A couple weeks ago, I thought Manny was out the door for sure, and with a decent return coming back. But recent developments have made me think twice about both. The two players who I think have been the best comps for Manny have been dealt, and haven’t brought back much. In Thome’s case, he has serious health concerns, so it’s understandable that the Phils will pick up half his contract. But I think the Delgado case makes things look very poor for Manny. Delgado has very similar value to Manny and his contract called for him to make either 3/48 or 4/54. In order to get just Jaccobs (B-?) and Petit (B+?) back, the Marlins had to throw in $7 mil.

Perhaps worse, the Mets were one of the main suitors for Manny, and they’ve also made offers to the FA catchers as well as Billy Wagner. And they’ve dealt Cameron, who seemed like a likely trade chit in our deal. If NY’s going to be involved, I’d say we’d probably end up getting back Floyd to defray the cost of Manny’s deal, and Milledge seems pretty unlikely as well.

My hopes of Manny going to any other team are pretty low. LAA for Kotchman? LAD for Drew or Bradley, with others involved? Arizona for ???

Has anyone else noticed how white this team is getting? That has to be a concern on a number of fronts.

I'm worried that Beane is going to swoop and offer Zito for our precious (Milledge) and Floyd.

i'm not.

yaknow, doesn't the konerko signing make it a little easier to find a taker for manny?

Rumor has it the Halos, left at the altar by Konerko, will deal Kotchman to KC for Sweeney.

I find it hard to believe Stoneman is that dumb. Sweeney hasn't topped 4 Wins Above Replacement Player since '02. I'd be shocked if Kotchman couldn't give you 4+ WARP next year; if you're willing to move The Great Erstad off 1B for Konerko, you should have the stones to do it for Kotchman.

Of course, if LAAoA simply must have a big veteran bat behind Vlad, I'd have to seriously consider an offer of Kotchman for Manny. I'd miss Manny a bunch, but if he's gonna go no matter what and it's a choice of Kotchman or Milledge coming back...

I don't see it. He doesn't seem like their kind of player. I think OleP's rumor of Sweeney sounds a lot more likely. Still a little foolish, but not as bad dealing a bunch for Manny. I would like to have Erstad in CF and Kotchman at 1B though.

Our only hope is to make it look like LAA is interested in Manny and hope that the Mets go for it.

UGHHH

Darin Erstad:
1. Made 900 gabillion dollars last yaer
2. Had a .320OBP and .370SLG
3. Would injure himself in 40 games playing CF... which we don't even know if he's still good at anymore.

The ONLY redeeming quality about Erstad is that he's a good 1B defender. That's it. I'd rather have John Olerud at 1B.

I don't know how much this matters to this discussion but Giles re-signed with the Padres.

3/30? Damn, great contract.

The Red Sox are looking like they've got basically no chance of replacing Manny for 2006 at this point. I argued a while back that the Sox would probably try, and fail to trade Manny once again this offseason.

That was before Lucchino cemented his power, but I still doubt they'll really screw up the chances of another postseason berth.

Giles resigning is great news, even more so if this keeps Eaton from being traded.

No, that's just the going rate for outfielders to return to their team. Hear that, Damon?
