Weekly Minor League Thread: Short Season Ball Begins

Lowell and the GCL Sox kicked off their seasons yesterday, and tonight the Sox got their first look at 2006 first-rounder, Caleb Clay. Clay pitched for Lowell and went 5 IP, allowing 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, and striking out 1. He was relieved by recent UNCC Adam Mills, who led division I in ERA this year. In tonight’s game, the crafty 8th rounder--or I like to call him, the next Tim Hudson--went two innings, striking out 1 and allowing no hits, walks, or runs.

Buchholz pitched well tonight and Lester was mediocre. Two more hits for Lowrie who looks like a legit ML SS.

Pedro Perez had a great start for the GCL Sox, although an opening day GCL lineup is typically pretty terrible. I've never heard of him before, anyone have anything?

Eh, we'll wait on him a little. That GCL Orioles lineup was truly horrendous.

The real pitcher to watch out for there is Anthony Alvarado, who is the youngest player in the GCL. He was actually headed for the DSL, but impressed so much in spring training that they kept him in the states.

Here are Buchholz's numbers YTD vs. Beckett when he was in double-A:

Buchholz: 74 IP, 49 hits, 18 BB/100 K, 1.82 ERA
Beckett: 74.1 IP, 50 hits, 19 BB/102 K, 1.82 ERA

Scary.

Why was Mills coming out of the bullpen? Was it just because the rosters are short? I assumed he'd be in the rotation at Lowell, and this looks like a significant demotion on the face of it. Well, hopefully he can pitch his way out of it.

My wife, son and I will see the Great Falls White Sox in July during a visit to MT. It'll be our first Short Season league game ever.

Mills has already pitched 140+ innings this season. He will be pitching in 2 inning intervals just about all season according to my peeps...

I never saw this game before, surely one of the most important games in Red Sox history. I was 12 at the time, pitching and playing centerfield for my little league team.

I bought tickets to see the Tri-City ValleyCats on July 4th and 5th. I think I'm going to go alone, with a scorebook, a beer, and a hotdog, and just bask in Americana. Minor League baseball is relaxing, that way.

I live in a NY-Penn League town (Burlington, VT). Lowell is coming to town next weekend. Anyone else that could be called a prospect besides CC Caleb Clay?

Well, there's Adam Mills, who's exactly as good as Mike Mussina.

Some of the guys could become prospects - Weeden and Kalish were pretty highly rated out of HS last year. CFO had good numbers in the VSL and GCL, but he's getting old for short-season.

I have no idea who Yamaico Navarro is, but he's 19, he plays SS and hit pretty good in the DSL last year. That the Red Sox jumped him straight from the Dominican over the GCL at 19 suggests they like him. Any of the people who actually know anything know anything about Nacarro?

Fun little hot starts in the GCL, looking at 30-35 PA...

Oscar Tejeda, 346/485/610, 17-year-old SS bonus baby
Mitch Dening, 370/433/519, 18-year-old Aussie OF, don't know anything about him

Tejeda in particular has a gorgeous statline, with power, patience, contact ability, youth, and up-the-middle position. It's way too early to say anything, and I admit to some fear of jinxing, but baseball's been annoying, and it's been fun to follow the minor leaguers who have been doing well.

Was gonna post about Tejada. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but he looks like he'll be the next Sox prospect to get Hanley Ramirez/Tony Blanco GCL superhype. Just the fact that he's been batting third since opening day in what looks like a pretty decent GCL lineup as a 17 year old SS says a lot.

That GCL and Greenville team portend a very fun double-A and triple-A future in a couple years.

Some Greenville notes:

Reddick: .339/.385/.548, 9/10 BB/K ratio. The kid is a monster.

King Engel: .310/.385/.443
BB/K by month:
April: 2/16
May: 9/16
June: 10/7

Laaaarrrrsss: OPS by month
April: .868
May: .914
June: .971

He's going to be a scary-good hitter.

The Sox have a dumb amount of outfield prospects in the low minors: Engel, Place, Reddick, Kalish, CFO, Beltre, Lin, Sumoza, Dening.

I just watched Moss in the Pawtucket game. The ball really seems to jump off his bat. Also, Breslow is just dominating down there--what will it take to bring him up?
