In trying to stump a baseball scholar who is now deceased, especially in old time Baseball,  I do have one question that he could not answer.  Before his death, he mentioned to ask other SABR brethen or baseball experts the question.

“Does anyone have a record of the first time infielders tossed the ball around the diamond during an inning after there was one or two outs in an inning.  Of course, before returning the ball to the pitcher to face the next batter.”

I’ve seen clips of infielders in the 50’s doing this,  but I’m sure this tradition had started way before that.

From Little Leaguers to the Majors Leagues, all ball players take part in this practice.

  Thanks,  Ohboyjjf
