One Arm Daily: Shortstop?
Posted: 25 October 2006 02:13 PM   [ Ignore ]

I was bumping around on bb-ref this morning, and noticed that One Arm Daily played two career games at second base and one at shortstop.  He had three assists at shortstop and was part of one double play.

Did he really have one arm?  If so, how in the world would someone with one arm turn a double play?

He was similar to Jim Abbott, in that he had most of his left arm, but no hand.  As for how he could take part in a double play, he could have fielded a grounder and flipped it to the second baseman.  Or he could have caught a line drive.  He wore a pad on the end of his left arm to help him field.

Ah, makes perfect sense.  Thanks.

I had a mental image of Pete Gray trying to pivot on a double play and I just couldn’t figure out how he’d be able to do it.
