So is it just bitterness to note that the Cardinals get Pujols back in about half the predicted time from a broken wrist, and the Mets injured players always miss at least twice the expected time (usually more)? Life sucks.
   2. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 06, 2011 at 02:25 AM (#3869661)
Nope, I complained about the Mets players never coming back on time in last nights chatter.
   3. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 02:29 AM (#3869664)
I would have preferred a liner in the gap there, Luke. In case you were wondering.
   4. Lassus Posted: July 06, 2011 at 02:33 AM (#3869665)
Even though I guess Lopes in the non-trivia question, I can't believe he had 20 HR before the All-Star break once.
   5. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 02:36 AM (#3869667)
These days, Pelf is the pitcher I cringe the most when he's on the mound and an error is made. It used to be Ollie, of course. But Pelfrey is just so damned fragile . . . .

So far, so good -- two outs on the way to pitching around it.
   6. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 02:38 AM (#3869668)
Now, that was a terrific job. Way not to be rattled by the E-6.
   7. Raskolnikov Posted: July 06, 2011 at 02:44 AM (#3869670)
I just hope Ike will be okay. It's pretty ridiculous that he could be out for the year - and microfracture surgery to boot.
   8. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 06, 2011 at 02:45 AM (#3869671)
Great job by Pagan going first to third.
   9. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 02:49 AM (#3869673)
Dear Carlos,

This whole McCutchen thing is bad enough w/o you popping up in situations like that.

Help a guy out next time? Thanks.

Sam

Mike Pelfrey's splits, depending on who is catching:

w/ Paulino: (10 games) 68 IP 59 H 28 ER 3.71 ERA 3.08 K/BB .230 OBA .268 OBP .383 SLG .650 OPS

w/ Thole: (5 games) 20.2 IP 34 H 21 ER 9.15 ERA 0.80 K/BB .366 OBA .455 OBP .591 SLG 1.047 OPS

Sample size be damned. I'm convinced: Pelfrey is a more comfortable and a better pitcher working with Paulino.

Kemp cannot go for home with one out. Really awful baserunning. Terrible.
   12. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:18 AM (#3869686)
That was helpful, Kemp.
   13. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:22 AM (#3869690)
A repeat of Lilly's double would NOT be welcome here.
   14. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:33 AM (#3869693)
Beltran!
   15. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:33 AM (#3869694)
Beltran says, "McCutchen who?"
   16. Raskolnikov Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:41 AM (#3869697)
Dear Carlos,

I think Beltran answered.
   17. Raskolnikov Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:43 AM (#3869699)
I want Beltran to finish his career as a Met.
   18. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:45 AM (#3869700)
I want Beltran to finish his career as a Met.

Really? I suspect he'd be better off with the opportunity to be at least a part-time DH, but maybe you're right.
   19. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:51 AM (#3869704)
That was a terrible pitch, and Pelf was really lucky Uribe hit it right to Pagan. WAY too much of the strike zone. Whew.
   20. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:52 AM (#3869705)
I guess we should credit Paulino for that lineout...
   21. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:53 AM (#3869706)
I'm convinced: Pelfrey is a more comfortable and a better pitcher working with Paulino.

I'm convinced you're convinced but you're not convincing. There's a difference.
   22. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:55 AM (#3869709)
Bay is not toast yet.
   23. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 06, 2011 at 03:56 AM (#3869710)
He's alive. Alllllllllive!
   24. Raskolnikov Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:00 AM (#3869716)
Jason Bay! Maybe he can get to 10 HRs this year?

Really? I suspect he'd be better off with the opportunity to be at least a part-time DH, but maybe you're right.

The Mets need some legitimate HOF players who've played a significant part of their careers as Mets. Beltran has a shot.
   25. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:05 AM (#3869720)
Wow, did Pelf need that easy/quick inning. Nice work.
   26. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:06 AM (#3869721)
Guys, I really believe that Bay had turned the corner. I also believe the Mets will genuinely compete if not win the Wild Card this year.

I also have been drinking.
   27. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:08 AM (#3869723)
I also have been drinking.

The only way to watch a Pelfrey start.
   28. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:10 AM (#3869725)
I really think I would hate Pelfrey if I knew him in real life too. Well, maybe not hate. But I wouldn't be inviting him to any BBQs or anything.
   29. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:10 AM (#3869726)
I also believe the Mets will genuinely compete if not win the Wild Card this year.

I believe I can fly.
I believe I can touch the sky.
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly

As long as we're believing . . . . Tug McGraw, meet R Kelly.
   30. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:13 AM (#3869727)
Seriously, tell me how many games (combined) we get from Wright, Beltran (traded???), Reyes, and Ike in the second half. Tell me if Johan comes back and makes at least 10 starts. When I know the answers to those questions, I'll tell you if the Mets have a real chance to get within striking distance of 90 wins.
   31. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:13 AM (#3869728)
God, why does everything come back to Space Jam?
   32. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:17 AM (#3869732)
God, why does everything come back to Space Jam?

That's what makes them classics: we keep coming back to them, don't we?
   33. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:20 AM (#3869735)
Sam, I don't know the answers to your questions. But I want to believe that the shitstorm of bad luck has shifted because looking at this team, I see a team that's much more intelligently designed than the previous few seasons. And I want that to count for something. If the Mets would have had the cast of supporting characters that they have this year in '07 and '08, I think things would have turned out a lot better.

Doesn't mean things will turn out, of course, but I don't think expecting Wright back in a couple weeks and Santana back a couple weeks after that is unreasonable. And if the Mets continue to play at the rate they've played at since they started 5-13... well, things could get interesting.

Ike, though, as I've stated before, is dead. I have a very strong feeling we won't see him again this year.
   34. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:23 AM (#3869736)
Nice job by Pedro the Lesser!
   35. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:24 AM (#3869737)
If Beato keeps this up, i'm going to start calling him Pedro III.
   36. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:26 AM (#3869739)
Come on, Piss Tits, let's keep on padding those All-Star stats.
   37. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:27 AM (#3869741)
Ker. Plunk.
   38. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:27 AM (#3869742)
That'll work, I want that average at .290 by the break!
   39. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:28 AM (#3869743)
Matt Kemp may play center field, but he can't play center field.
   40. Lassus Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:31 AM (#3869747)
I don't remember what year it was, but recently, I did say that as goes Carlos Delgado, so go the mets. I think that is likely for Bay as well. Not that he leads the team like Reyes does, but without a decent Bay, I just don't think we go anywhere this year.
   41. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:33 AM (#3869748)
Woo Bay!
   42. Lassus Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:33 AM (#3869749)
HOLY ####### SHT!
   43. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:33 AM (#3869750)
Opposite field? Are you kidding me? I think coming back to the scene of the crime has been cleansing for Bay. Killer blow!
   44. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:43 AM (#3869761)
See, corner turned!

And a wonderful play from Ruben.
   45. Lassus Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:44 AM (#3869762)
I know it's no secret I love me some Ruben Tejada.
   46. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:53 AM (#3869769)
Bay's OPS is almost to .700 now!
   47. Lassus Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:54 AM (#3869771)
Carrasco to finish it off? Not to be negative, but, ugh.
   48. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:56 AM (#3869774)
Better him than sucK-Rod, Lassus.
   49. Raskolnikov Posted: July 06, 2011 at 04:58 AM (#3869776)
It would be so nice to see the old Bay again.
   50. Banta Posted: July 06, 2011 at 05:01 AM (#3869780)
Excellent win. And tomorrow, we set a new highwater mark for the season!

And hopefully Reyes runs like the wind. A nice strong wind without any lapses. A tornado, as it were.
