So is it just bitterness to note that the Cardinals get Pujols back in about half the predicted time from a broken wrist, and the Mets injured players always miss at least twice the expected time (usually more)? Life sucks.

These days, Pelf is the pitcher I cringe the most when he's on the mound and an error is made. It used to be Ollie, of course. But Pelfrey is just so damned fragile . . . .

So far, so good -- two outs on the way to pitching around it.

w/ Paulino: (10 games) 68 IP 59 H 28 ER 3.71 ERA 3.08 K/BB .230 OBA .268 OBP .383 SLG .650 OPS

w/ Thole: (5 games) 20.2 IP 34 H 21 ER 9.15 ERA 0.80 K/BB .366 OBA .455 OBP .591 SLG 1.047 OPS

Sample size be damned. I'm convinced: Pelfrey is a more comfortable and a better pitcher working with Paulino.

Seriously, tell me how many games (combined) we get from Wright, Beltran (traded???), Reyes, and Ike in the second half. Tell me if Johan comes back and makes at least 10 starts. When I know the answers to those questions, I'll tell you if the Mets have a real chance to get within striking distance of 90 wins.

Sam, I don't know the answers to your questions. But I want to believe that the shitstorm of bad luck has shifted because looking at this team, I see a team that's much more intelligently designed than the previous few seasons. And I want that to count for something. If the Mets would have had the cast of supporting characters that they have this year in '07 and '08, I think things would have turned out a lot better.

Doesn't mean things will turn out, of course, but I don't think expecting Wright back in a couple weeks and Santana back a couple weeks after that is unreasonable. And if the Mets continue to play at the rate they've played at since they started 5-13... well, things could get interesting.

Ike, though, as I've stated before, is dead. I have a very strong feeling we won't see him again this year.

I don't remember what year it was, but recently, I did say that as goes Carlos Delgado, so go the mets. I think that is likely for Bay as well. Not that he leads the team like Reyes does, but without a decent Bay, I just don't think we go anywhere this year.
