BOS: John Lackey (32, RHP, 5-6, 7.36)

Awesome
   2. Dan Posted: June 29, 2011 at 10:47 PM (#3865684)
So what's the O/U on runs allowed by Lackey? 5.5?

i'd probably set the over/under on runs scored by both teams around 15.

worley is a guy that the sox offense should eat whole.

i think that's the first brushback by a phillies starter this season.

and a called strike 3 the next pitch.

i might have underestimated this guy.

He doesn't look too bad so far.

Sox offense is a mess right now. Lee is awesome of course but they haven't hit anyone for a week.

And I hate Gonzo in right.

Lackey is going to toss a gem tonight. Book it.

he's throwing strikes. he's got a good fastball, but he's had issues with his command throughout the year. that didn't show in the first inning, but he's gonna need to be sharp to get out of this game whole.
   9. Dan Posted: June 29, 2011 at 11:20 PM (#3865709)
And I hate Gonzo in right.

I love it! Well not defensively, but I like Francona's willingness to give it a try to get the extra bat in the lineup.

I like being creative and even a bit risky. I just think the damage that could come from an injury far outweighs the benefit of maybe winning one game.

Why is he significantly more likely to get injured running in the OF than he is running the bases or diving on the infield?
   14. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: June 29, 2011 at 11:24 PM (#3865717)
Man this would really be a bad time for a rocket to right wouldn't it?
   15. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2011 at 11:26 PM (#3865719)
It's unfamiliar. His movements won't be the usual muscle memory movements, he'll have to thnk a bit more, exert himself in ways he is not used to. The likelihood of injury is very very small, I concede that. The damage that losing Gonzalez for an extended period is to great to make it worth while.

Thanks Lackey.

   22. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2011 at 11:40 PM (#3865732)
I wonder whose glove Gonzalez is using. Why would he have anything other than a first baseman mitt?
   23. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2011 at 11:42 PM (#3865733)
Generous strike zone for both guys.

He's using Carl Crawford's gold glove.

Lackey can't get a bunt down either. Color me shocked that he failed at something.

Just tuning in - how's Lackey been?
   30. Dan Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:15 AM (#3865770)
He's actually been pretty decent for the last 2 innings, large a function of the umpire calling a huge zone tonight.
   31. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:17 AM (#3865773)
I thought Raul Ibanez stopped hitting???
   32. Textbook Editor Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:17 AM (#3865772)
Ortiz picks it!
   33. Textbook Editor Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:19 AM (#3865775)
I know I'm over-reacting in #32, but folks make it sound as if he's a statue at 1B and while he's no gold glover he's hardly useless. Does no one remember him nailing Suppan at 3B in Game 3 of the 2004 WS? A butcher doesn't make that play.
   34. Dan Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:19 AM (#3865777)
Gonzalez and Papi on defense haven't cost them anything through 4 innings, at any rate.
   35. Dan Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:20 AM (#3865778)
Ortiz is a perfectly acceptable defender at first base. He's about as good as Ryan Howard, for example.
   36. Dan Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:21 AM (#3865779)
At least Reddick is still hitting.

I can't stand why they do that when it's a close game. If they want to do that in garbage time in a blowout it's one thing, but in a tie game it's unacceptable and completely unprofessional.

God, what a stupid bunt attempt by Reddick.

1) The 8th batter should never sacrifice the man to 7th in an NL game.
2) He clearly has no idea how to bunt, his technique was embarrassing.
3) You can hit this guy! Why give him a strike?
   63. Textbook Editor Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:58 AM (#3865826)

   65. Chip Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:58 AM (#3865828)
I think Remy's right, Reddick is safe regardless of the drop. Still, this road trip for the Red Sox has seen some truly horrible fielding mistakes by them AND their opponents. That Pirates series was a defensive disaster for both rosters.
   66. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:58 AM (#3865829)
Life would be great if Scutaro could do something here
   67. Chip Posted: June 30, 2011 at 12:59 AM (#3865830)
Also, I agree with MCoA that the bunt was insanely stupid. I really, really hope that was him being an idiot on his own and not Tito being an even bigger idiot and ordering it.
   68. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2011 at 01:00 AM (#3865832)
Wonder if Reddick missed a sign. The bunt there is out of character for Francona.
   69. Dan Posted: June 30, 2011 at 01:01 AM (#3865833)
Lackey's going to fall apart in the bottom of the inning after not being lifted for a pinch hitter isn't he?
   70. Textbook Editor Posted: June 30, 2011 at 01:01 AM (#3865834)
Here comes the 4 runs allowed by Lackey in his last inning, thereby blowing all the positive vibes from the past 6 innings. [smacks head against wall]

I suppose Tito just doesn't care if Lackey's head ever gets right again?

I took it as embarrassment - I think Reddick was bunting on his own, and then was embarrassed at the result, and knew he'd get a little chewed out when he got back to the dugout.

Lackey's been cruising and had thrown very few pitches, you don't lift him that early from his best outing in months.
   80. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2011 at 01:09 AM (#3865851)
By all means Tito should be lifting the pitcher with six innings of one run ball and 77 pitches. The guy was barely hanging on.
   81. Textbook Editor Posted: June 30, 2011 at 01:11 AM (#3865852)
I'm tired of Tito's slow hook. I don't care that it's June. This was a great chance to have Lackey leave on a high note--something he desperately needs to get his head right--and he would NOT have been second-guessed having a PH there for him.

   84. Dan Posted: June 30, 2011 at 01:14 AM (#3865859)
You pinch hit for Lackey there in the 7th. If your pitcher is batting with a man on and 2 outs in the 7th inning, you pinch hit unless he's Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee or some other ace, regardless of his pitch count.

No it would have been a great way to show Lackey that he has no confidence in him. If he'd only given up a run but had been hit hard or was all over the place and squeaking out of jam after jam, fine, but that's not what was happening.
   86. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2011 at 01:14 AM (#3865862)
SLOW hook? 6 IP, 5 hits, 1 run 77 pitches. The guy was cruising. If you're lifting guys that fast Tito needs a 14 man bullpen because he's blowing those guys out by June.

Seriously, tell me something that happened before the homer that said "Lackey's done."

I buy this. It's got nothing to do with the slow hook - it's the Book argument that managers should be far more aggressive in pinch-hitting for pitchers.
   89. plink Posted: June 30, 2011 at 01:17 AM (#3865865)
Oh, and it was completely reasonable to leave Lackey in. Ibanez hit a pitch off his shoetops, for goodness sakes.
   90. Textbook Editor Posted: June 30, 2011 at 01:17 AM (#3865868)
Well, I guess I'm in the very minority on this one. I say you take 6 IP/1 run and get the hell outta Dodge. Your bullpen is basically rested and you have Lester going tomorrow.

I hate the Tito slow hook as much as anyone, but I wish they had given him one more batter. If he could get a CG, even in a loss, I think it'd be a big confidence booster. He's clearly in a bad place, mentally, this season ("Everything in my life sucks right now"), and that vote of confidence, with only 90 pitches, might help.

Then again, I'd like to see this inning end without a run.

Without a doubt I played 'Queen of Hearts' earlier and just can't stop - It's now been over an hour. I love that Thatcher part of English history so this album strikes an extra nerve for me.

I really love concept albums as well, so I was always going to love this!!!

This is an interview worth reading - just avoid some of the comments - heaps of lemons there...
