Can't been the old "It's 4-0 when I log on in the top of the first" sensation...
   4. Jay Seaver Posted: September 06, 2011 at 11:48 PM (#3918115)
Adrian Gonzalez scores from first, but even considering that, Youk had no business trying to take third.

Ah, well. 6-0 after one and a half.
   5. Dale Sams Posted: September 06, 2011 at 11:50 PM (#3918116)
Nice. I'm behind you guys a 1/2 inning. Good to see another team play the roll of Keystone Kops, and it's nice to see the Sox get out of this offensive funk.
   6. Joe Bivens, Minor Genius Posted: September 06, 2011 at 11:51 PM (#3918117)
Oh, he had business. Business to attend to at third.
   7. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 06, 2011 at 11:54 PM (#3918119)
Nice lead, Tampa down 2-0 at Texas, surely for you Dale and Jose, this will ease some of your concern about making the playoffs...
   8. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:00 AM (#3918125)
Oops, didn't realise Texas is at Tampa, anyway, that's 3-0 now to Texas.

Productive out!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Peretz has nothing tonight.
   16. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:10 AM (#3918137)
Well this is getting fun. And Texas up 5-0. How long do you give Lester? 6 innings, 100 pitch max type of thing?
   17. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:11 AM (#3918139)
It would be silly to claim that the Red Sox are winning because of me, but I will simply observe this is the first game I've been able to watch since last Wednesday.
   18. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:11 AM (#3918140)
And to rub salt into Toronto's wounds...even McDonald got a hit!
   19. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:13 AM (#3918141)
How ironic, Pedroia the only starter without a hit, reaches on an error.
   20. Joe Bivens, Minor Genius Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:13 AM (#3918142)
Wait, someone is worried they won't make the playoffs?
   21. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:16 AM (#3918144)
#20, please address your inquiry towards Dale and Jose the seabiscuit
   22. Jay Seaver Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:27 AM (#3918148)
Lawrie not impressing so much at third (although, on replay, that's not a bad stop).
   23. Textbook Editor Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:33 AM (#3918152)
Pour it on, please.
   24. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:34 AM (#3918154)
oooh, maybe they can do that score in every inning thing, that'd be cool, that rarely happens...
   25. Jay Seaver Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:39 AM (#3918156)
Yep, it's going to be that kind of night for the Jays (as if there were any doubt). On an even marginally less sucky night for them, McDonald is out.
   26. Jay Seaver Posted: September 07, 2011 at 12:40 AM (#3918157)
Whoa, Darnell is above the McDonald Mendoza line! When did that happen?

Wait, someone is worried they won't make the playoffs?

Wasn't me

I've been calm since the end of May !!

Hugh Jordan will vouch for me on this one as he knows that only thing I am angry about is South Sydney...

Has anybody ever had an at-bat/plate appearance in every inning of a 9-inning game? I think Jacoby & Pedroia are still in line to manage it.
   31. Dan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:00 AM (#3918176)
How many times per week does Crawford swing at ball 4 with a full count? 10?
   32. Jay Seaver Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:00 AM (#3918177)
Sorry about even thinking that. Still got runs in each inning going, though.
   33. Darren Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:16 AM (#3918189)
I remembered feeling sick when MCOA said that Crawford would end the year at something like .320/.400. What a dream that would be. $20 mil. replacement player.

Hey, Pedroia's not hitting anymore.

I'd pull Lester here and bring him back Sunday. I might let him go another.

Glad they let Pedroia get to 0-5 before pulling him.
   36. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:22 AM (#3918197)
Damn, no runs in the 6th. Oh well, Texas up 7-0. This turning into a fine day. I'd let Lester finish the 6th, then pull him.

Ortiz up to 319/406/591. Yikes he's good.

What a shock--Lester's back!
   39. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:36 AM (#3918210)
Ortiz up to 319/406/591. Yikes he's good

It's amazing how much shinier his numbers look when he doesn't have the shocking April start like 2009 and 2010.

And they are letting Lester go up to 100 pitches or so...

Nothing says September baseball in Toronto like Chris Woodward getting an AB.
   41. ray james Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:44 AM (#3918223)
And don't forget! McDonald's got his batting average above the Mendoza line.

For all the pants-pissers in Red Sox Nation:

After tonight, it appears Boston will be 85-56, and Tampa will be 77-64, eight games back.

If the Red Sox go 10-11 the rest of the way, Tampa will have to go 19-2 to beat them for the wild card.

If the Red Sox go friggin' 5-16 the rest of the way, Tampa still has to go 14-7 to beat the Sox for the wild card.

If Tampa sweeps all seven games remaining against the Sox, and the Red Sox split the other 14 games they have left, Tampa would STILL have to go 9-5 to win the wild card - pace better than their overall record this season through 140 games.

Not. Happening.
   43. Darren Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:46 AM (#3918229)
Lester's down to a 2.93 ERA. Yikes, he's good.

   44. Jay Seaver Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:49 AM (#3918231)
Thanks, Josh. With no scoring for two or three innings, I was starting to worry about this team's playoff chances.
   45. Darren Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:50 AM (#3918232)
With a win tonight, he'll have a .710 career winning percentage. That's #2 of pitchers since 1900 (Spud Chandler).
   46. Jay Seaver Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:51 AM (#3918235)
Someone do something with the "Lesters Hot Dogs" signage behind home plate. I'm trying to think of a joke, but it's just not happening.

(Also, what is it they've got against apostrophes in Canada? First Tim Hortons, now this!)
   47. Darren Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:52 AM (#3918238)
I don't see how you guys can be so hard o sea biscuit and dale. It's hard to feel good about a team when they've just lost a bunch of ground during a home stand and then seeemed to have lost all but 1 of their starters.

Lavarnway--fun!
   48. Dan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 01:55 AM (#3918243)
Why is Lowrie at first instead of Youkilis?

Sure, maybe the jibing goes a bit far, but c'mon, the lineup is just too good not to score at least 6 runs in eight of the next 22 games of which you win 7 at least. Since they called the Beckett thing a sprain, I'm thinking they'll be overly cautious and keep him out longer then really needs to be, Bedard will be back and heck even(sorry Teddy) Wake might give you 85 pitches of something decent and you can squeeze out another win. It's just silly to think the team will go something like 5-16. They already had that stretch, good teams rarely do a stretch like that twice in a season because then they wouldn't be a good team. And these guys are good.
   51. Darren Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:02 AM (#3918251)
Sure, but this team without Beckett and Bedard (as was thought), is not a good team.
   52. plink Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:03 AM (#3918252)
(Also, what is it they've got against apostrophes in Canada? First Tim Hortons, now this!)

This happens a lot in Canada, due to Quebec language laws. For international brands (like McDonald's), you'll often see a maple leaf instead of an apostrophe.
   53. Jay Seaver Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:07 AM (#3918256)
52 - Huh, there's a reason? I've always just joked that the "s" in "Tim Hortons" is just to represent ubiquity.

NESN - I laugh every time those ads call Michael Showalter a big name, and I'm someone who saw and rather liked The Baxter.
   54. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:07 AM (#3918257)
Nice game by Lester. 11K, 3hit, 1BB.

So what is the consensus, do you really think they'll go with a 4 man rotation for the playoffs or try to get it down to just Lester, Beckett and Bedard?
   55. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:09 AM (#3918258)
Sure, but this team without Beckett and Bedard (as was thought), is not a good team

Of course, that's a given. You'd be hoping to win a lot of 9-7 games then and in the playoffs that won't happen.

Who is this Nate Spears dude?
   58. Dan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:15 AM (#3918264)
Is Scutaro's shoulder feeling better or something? He looks like he's getting more on his throws than usual. Or can he only throw while playing in the Skydome, like he can only hit here?
   59. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:18 AM (#3918267)
Can't beat the old "It's 14-0, and the Red Sox have had 25 guys reach base, and Carl Crawford got taken out in the 6th inning for Nate Spears, and he still had time to strike out twice and ground out to first" sensation...

...I know he also had an RBI double, but it's Carl Crawford.

Can you believe that Crawford and Lackey make something like $36 million this year, combined? And Bobby Jenks makes $6m. And Matsuzaka is making $10m. That's $52 million from four guys doing nothing for the team this year.

The Rays total payroll is about $42 million this year.
   60. Dan Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:20 AM (#3918270)
Add Drew's $14M to the guys doing nothing this year. And Cameron's ~$8M.

The Yankees still haven't started, but they have no time in their schedule to make these games up so they can't really call it.
   61. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:30 AM (#3918276)
#59 - Crawford and Lackey make me sick.

Both seemed at the time like we didn't really need them at all - now it going to haunt us forever
   62. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:40 AM (#3918289)
Wow. #60 is right. That's $64m. Doing. Absolutely. Nothing.

#61 - Right on. That's exactly how I felt about Lackey and Crawford. Lackey felt like, "We need a pitcher, we've got the money, let's get the best pitcher on the market." I've never cared for Lackey.

Crawford was a little different, in the sense that he we needed an outfielder, and he was a pretty elite player. The problem is that he wasn't THAT elite, and everyone and their sister knows it was an overpay. Six more years of Crawford? Damn.
   63. Dale Sams Posted: September 07, 2011 at 02:45 AM (#3918297)
I never said the Sox wouldn't make it, (for the billionth time) I said they'd go 10-12. This is one of the wins I counted on.
