Game 162 chatter is here.

Per PeteAbe Buchholz is active and not a candidate to start tomorrow. Buchholz thinks he can get 4-5 outs.

So checking again whether the regular crew -- Jose, Phil, Darren, MCoA, Dale, Dan, ray james, TE, Biff, Hugh, Jay, and any of the others I'm forgetting -- are planning to be here or at the catch-all chatter?
   4. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 10:18 PM (#3941596)
I was planning on staying here, since the other thread will have crazy velocity talking about things like the NL games and Braun's batting title chase, etc.

I'll be watching Rays - Yankees as well as this game, so probably talking a bit about that game in here as well, but the thread velocity on the main board will probably make it impossible to keep up while also watching 2 baseball games.
   5. Textbook Editor Posted: September 28, 2011 at 10:21 PM (#3941606)
Eh, I might go back-and-forth, since I'll be checking on the NL thing too--a couple friends of mine are Cardinal fans and they've been going nuts lately.

I'll save my rants for here, though...

I'm going to be here for the same reasons as Dan plus a mild hope at dodging trolls a little bit.

I can't believe how nervous I am.
   7. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: September 28, 2011 at 10:43 PM (#3941625)
Dan, Jose, I was hoping that's what most would do. I can't fathom trying to keep track of the megathread.

Hell, we've been up over 700 the last couple of nights, that one is going to be madness.

I felt that way too, but I thought saying it would ruin it.

Thanks, José!

Yeah, hope I haven't opened us up. For what it's worth DKDC and any other Oriole fans are of course welcome to root on their boys. I'm not much for trash talking (in either direction) and I hope that we can avoid that tonight in either direction.
   11. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: September 28, 2011 at 10:54 PM (#3941643)
Ehh, I've got a few of the obvious trolls ignored anyway, won't be that hard to add more.
   12. ray james Posted: September 28, 2011 at 10:54 PM (#3941644)
I'm staying here too. The chatter gets too disjointed when people are watching several different games and commenting in the same place. It's gets very confusing when someone references something and it's not clear to what game they are referencing.
   13. Lassus Posted: September 28, 2011 at 10:54 PM (#3941645)
I'm going to be here for the same reasons as Dan plus a mild hope at dodging trolls a little bit.

I think not.

Well, actually, I'm rooting for you guys. Even so.
   14. Lassus Posted: September 28, 2011 at 10:55 PM (#3941647)
That image came up when I googled "troll cannon", btw.
   15. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:00 PM (#3941652)
So so much of this depends on Lester. I know that's about as obvious as saying we just need to outscore them, but well, you know.
   16. ray james Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:01 PM (#3941653)
Buchholz thinks he can get 4-5 outs.

I hope this presages a Gibsonian karma with the "I think I've got one good swing" thing.
   17. ray james Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:02 PM (#3941656)
The thing that knaws at me is that Lester has looked like crap lately.
   18. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:05 PM (#3941660)
The thing that knaws at me is that Lester has looked like crap lately.

Well if he can't pitch well tonight, it probably means he would've sucked in the playoffs too. They wouldn't be going far in the playoffs without Lester and Beckett pitching well anyway.
   19. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:05 PM (#3941662)
I'll do bits of both.

I have no faith in Lester btw

I really don't know what to expect.
   22. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:08 PM (#3941671)
I can't believe the Sox game is on ESPN...and I'm still stuck with Palmer/Thorne because of the MASN blackout. #######
   23. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:09 PM (#3941672)
BELIEVE!!!
   24. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:10 PM (#3941675)
Remy says the team seemed tight about this game. Considering how they've played all season, if they're noticeably tighter tonight, that's a really, really bad sign.
   25. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:10 PM (#3941677)
According to MLB Trade Rumors Joel Sherman is saying Terry Francona isn't safe and the feeling is that he's let players get out of shape and has stopped attending to some of the smaller details of his job.
   26. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:11 PM (#3941678)
how they've played all month, that should be.
   27. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:12 PM (#3941685)
That doesn't surprise me José. It fits in nicely with my impression that he's gotten to be too much of a buddy to too many players instead of a boss and a leader.
   28. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:12 PM (#3941687)
######' night shifts, man. I hope these games are wrapped up by 9:45 or so. Yeah, that's right, a Red Sox game and a Yankees game in under 3 hours.
   29. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:13 PM (#3941688)
Interesting to see the score of the TB/Yankees game on the screen full time. I don't think I've ever seen that before.

"Terry Francona wanted to get his best four hitters up as often as possible."

Holy crap Tito, you figure that one out in game 162?

   32. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:15 PM (#3941698)
Seriously, that quote is pretty bad.

So when you were batting Crawford 2nd, you didn't think it was important to get your best 4 hitters as many Pas as possible?
   33. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:15 PM (#3941702)
Gift call on ball 2.

I sort of hope this is true - but it would never be admitted to. It looks like it though
   35. ray james Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:15 PM (#3941704)
That was a strike. Hirshbeck is off his game. The first pitch to Ellsbury was a ball he called a strike.

Lavarnway the starting catcher for the Sox today?

Gutsy and the right call. I like it. I'm not rooting for the Sox, but I hope he does well tonight.
   39. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:16 PM (#3941711)
Please take advantage of this break. Gonzalez has to make something happen to set the tone in this game.
   40. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:16 PM (#3941712)
Let's make this break pay for us
   41. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:17 PM (#3941714)
That was pathetic, Adrian.
   42. ray james Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:17 PM (#3941716)
So, which players do you think Sherman/Heyman is referring to who got out of shape?

I'd say Lackey, Gonzalez, Drew, and Crawford are in the mix.
   43. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:19 PM (#3941722)
I don't think Crawford got out of shape. He seems like a fitness nut. If anything, he probably works out TOO hard during the season and tires himself out.

Definitely Beckett and Lackey. Probably Lester. Maybe Buchholz. Maybe Youkilis. Maybe Cameron. Probably Varitek.

Yankees up 1-0 on a Zorbrist error!

Lester's velocity looks good. 95s and 96s.
   51. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:22 PM (#3941742)
I wonder about Bard's conditioning. He's thin but he has worn down pretty noticeably as the year progressed.

####### bloop.
   53. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:23 PM (#3941746)
Might as well give up the crooked number early as per usual
   54. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:23 PM (#3941748)
Terrible pitch. 91 MPH cutter that broke right back over the plate.
   55. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:23 PM (#3941751)
Price has lost the strike zone. Not responding well to the error.
   56. Joe Bivens, Minor Genius Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:24 PM (#3941752)
That was no bloop. Lester looks ok, though.

TB trying to give the game away already
   58. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:24 PM (#3941755)
Lester seems to be getting a bit more of the zone with his fastball than he usually does - that can be a sign of overthrowing a little.
   59. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:24 PM (#3941756)
Before we get too deep I haven't seen him here tonight yet but hat tip to MCoA for running Sox Therapy all year. We have a great community of Sox fans here and I think he's a big reason why.
   60. ray james Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:24 PM (#3941757)
If Francona is letting his players get out of shape, it partly explains last year's collapse too and then I think it's justifiable to let him go.
   61. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:25 PM (#3941759)
Fastball command looks great. And the life on it is good.

Cutter looks bad so far but the good fastball is a great sign...
   62. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:25 PM (#3941760)
And on cue Mikael shows up!
   63. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:25 PM (#3941766)
And right after I said that, he throws a pair of perfect ones.

To me, 2010 is all about the injuries. The whole difference between the club's projected and actual wins was injuries. I guess you could say they got injured because of conditioning, or something.
   64. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:25 PM (#3941767)
Yankees leave 2 on, but made Price throw a ton of pitches.
   65. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:26 PM (#3941768)
29 pitch first inning for Price, I'll take that. WIsh they'd gotten more than the one.
   66. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:26 PM (#3941769)
Nice inning for Lester. Price out of his without more damage but 29 pitches already.
   67. Joe Bivens, Minor Genius Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:26 PM (#3941771)
I like Lavarnway, a lot.
   68. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:26 PM (#3941772)
This is 95% on the pitching staff.

This is also on the Sox continuing to take the piss out of baseball and throwing a novelty act there every 5 games
   69. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:27 PM (#3941774)
OK, I'll admit it, no matter how much I see them the Slowsky's kill me.
   70. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:27 PM (#3941778)
Lavarnway's defense seems totally unremarkable, in a good way. Nothing about him screams "that guy isn't a catcher".
   71. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:27 PM (#3941780)
Phil, I know you don't like him but Wake is third in ERA in September among starters. Lackey and Weiland were much worse.
   72. ray james Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:28 PM (#3941782)
Well, Price got out of it but had to throw 29 pitches. Hope the Yankees can keep that up.

I said in another thread that this year's Red Sox remind me of the 1983 Celtics.
   73. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:28 PM (#3941784)
Phil, I know you don't like him but Wake is third in ERA in September among starters. Lackey and Weiland were much worse.

How many unearned runs?
   74. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:28 PM (#3941785)
I was out drinking for the game last night, but what I was able to see, Lavarnway looked perfectly fine behind the plate.

In his first PAs with the Sox, I thought he was too passive. That one he took a pitch to drive on 0-0 and swung at a pitcher's pitch. I think he could benefit from some coaching on approach at the plate.
   75. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:29 PM (#3941786)
From start to hitting zone seems like a very short trip for Lavarnway's bat. Not a big swing for a power hitter.
   76. Jim Wisinski Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:29 PM (#3941789)
I wouldn't want Price to go more than six anyway tonight, I'd much rather put my faith in three highly leveraged bullpen innings these days than him late in the game. He has been coming up small pretty regularly since the 2010 ALDS.
   77. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:29 PM (#3941790)
Zombie Drew!
   78. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:29 PM (#3941791)
Unearned runs don't count Dan...shhhhh
   79. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:29 PM (#3941792)
Kinda surprised Markakis didn't catch that, but hey, Drew hit a line drive on a fast ball, so I'll take it.
   80. Textbook Editor Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:30 PM (#3941794)
Hate the bunt.
   81. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:30 PM (#3941795)
Hey Jim, how you doing? You wound up or is this a "house money" situation for Rays fans?
   82. ray james Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:30 PM (#3941796)
I guess you could say they got injured because of conditioning, or something.

That's what I was alluding to. Out of shape players end up getting hurt.
   83. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:31 PM (#3941797)
Betances still looks like he can't throw strikes.
   84. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:31 PM (#3941799)
Simon's got #1 starter stuff. Where did he come from and why doesn't he get more Ks?
   85. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:31 PM (#3941800)
TE - pretty sure Scutaro was bunting for a hit there.
   86. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:31 PM (#3941801)
Phil, I know you don't like him but Wake is third in ERA in September among starters. Lackey and Weiland were much worse.

It irks me that the Sox thought it was more important to get him 200 wins. They clearly thought the spot was sewn up.

Lackey and Weiland are another rant

But I've never seen a worse effort in my life from a pitching rotation over the last 4-5 weeks.
   87. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:31 PM (#3941802)
Time for Crawford to come up big. On a related note, this paint I'm huffing is excellent.
   88. Dan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:31 PM (#3941803)
Wow, Montero looked all kinds of awful on that throw.
   89. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:32 PM (#3941805)
Betances still looks like he can't throw strikes.
But, but, his minor league hit rate is low!
   90. Jim Wisinski Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:32 PM (#3941807)
Pretty wound up. Sure, the team isn't super-deserving of a playoff spot or anything but it would obviously be huge for them to get in particularly after they were largely declared dead before spring training. Also nervous about Price and the randomly disappearing offense, as well as the fact that the Orioles are a pretty bad team capable of falling apart at any moment in a game.
   91. ray james Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:32 PM (#3941808)
Where did he come from and why doesn't he get more Ks?

He really has trouble commanding.
   92. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 28, 2011 at 11:32 PM (#3941809)
Betances has been behind the first three hitters 2-0, that's not gonna work.

So you guys know: I'm in ALexandria, VA, about 10 miles south of DC. Some big thunder starting up, and my wife just called from about 10 - 15 miles west of here and it's pouring.
