The Cubs place Big Z on the DL and activate Kerry Wood.
   2. Brian C Posted: July 01, 2011 at 06:12 PM (#3867167)
For those outside of Chicago, we were expecting temps somewhere in the mid-90s or higher today. Doesn't look like that's going to happen, as it's somewhere in the low- to mid-70s out there now, with wind off the lake.

So ... whew.
   3. SouthSideRyan Posted: July 01, 2011 at 06:23 PM (#3867176)
Accuweather still calling for 93 and sunny at 3 PM, while simultaneously issuing a thunderstorm warning until 2:15.
   4. SteveM. Posted: July 01, 2011 at 06:26 PM (#3867182)
Throw the ball over the plate! No one is hitting one out right now.

The search for the elusive 3rd win in a row continues

I ####### loathe AJ Pierzynski
   7. Brian C Posted: July 01, 2011 at 06:49 PM (#3867213)
Just walked out to the lake, and boy, it looks like Armageddon out there. Very dark to the east, with waves crashing against the pier and wind coming from seemingly three directions at once. Crazy.
   8. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 06:53 PM (#3867214)
Its no fun being in indiana right now i can tell you that
   9. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 06:58 PM (#3867225)
Wo lightning a mile away from me, asol how did pena not score on the double?
   10. Brian C Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:04 PM (#3867229)
I believe it, meat. We had some wicked storms here on the North Side last night. Also, when I went outside just now, a large tree branch fell right around a woman on the side walk - one side of the fork when behind her, one in front. I don't know how it missed her, but it did. It was like something out of a Wile E Coyote cartoon.
   11. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:04 PM (#3867230)
Wells really needs to go deep in the game today the pen is wrecked
   12. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:05 PM (#3867232)
I bet she was scared, last night didnt seem too bad here. Lots of lightning though
   13. SteveM. Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:06 PM (#3867233)
Meat-I lived in Indianapolis for two years. Is it ever fun to live in Indiana?
   14. Brian C Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:08 PM (#3867236)
There's a good example of a Castro play that other Cubs SS I've seen wouldn't have made.
   15. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:11 PM (#3867243)
And that last one had to have struck a nearby building
   16. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:14 PM (#3867248)
No its never fun to live here ill give you that
   17. SteveM. Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:26 PM (#3867266)
Nice job by Aramis to get him home. Way too many times this season the Cubs have stranded a guy on third with less them two outs.
   18. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:29 PM (#3867271)
Nce to see them get the lead, wells needs to follow with a quick low pitch inning
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:49 PM (#3867292)
The sky off the first base side is looking quite ominous.
   20. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:53 PM (#3867293)
Wow, Wells with EIGHT pitches in the last two innings.
   21. SteveM. Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:53 PM (#3867294)
A 3 pitch inning will help out Well's pitch count.
   22. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:53 PM (#3867295)
Wow 3 pitch inning
   23. SteveM. Posted: July 01, 2011 at 07:58 PM (#3867303)

Hell yeah

I take that back-Aramis!!
   26. Spahn Insane Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:00 PM (#3867307)
That Hudson/Jackson trade was really dumb for the Sox.
   27. Spahn Insane Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:01 PM (#3867309)
3 pitch inning, while allowing a batter to reach, no less.
   28. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:03 PM (#3867310)
Aramis has been absurd this week. Five homers on the homestand and six in the last six days.
   29. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:04 PM (#3867312)
Reminds me of Nomar's Cub debut, Gern.
   30. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:06 PM (#3867315)
This is the critical inning for Wells. He needs to shut down the Sox.
   31. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:06 PM (#3867316)
Well ####

Well, fiddlysticks.
   37. SouthSideRyan Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:11 PM (#3867327)
How come I got censored when I said fiddlysticks
   38. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:13 PM (#3867330)
Get Wells out of there. This is about to get ugly.
   39. SteveM. Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:14 PM (#3867331)
To be beat by Juan Pierre is just plain embarrassing.
   40. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:15 PM (#3867332)
And that's Randy Wells in a nutshell. An innings-eater prone to sudden and grand disaster.
   41. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:15 PM (#3867333)

How come I got censored when I said fiddlysticks

Probably 'cause you spelled it the way I thought it.
   43. Spahn Insane Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:17 PM (#3867336)
Quade has a really poor sense of when to pull the plug on a starter, doesn't he.
   44. Spahn Insane Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:17 PM (#3867338)
Though I suppose it's not fair to bag on him for this particular game, since Wells had thrown 8 total pitches the previous 2 innings.
   45. Brian C Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:18 PM (#3867339)
Can't say that I hate leaving Wells in that long. Bullpen crushed yesterday, Wells not getting crushed today, BPJ the best alternative ... it all makes the slow hook defensible.
   46. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:19 PM (#3867341)
Usually, but this was a sudden collapse. The game was tied within 5 pitches and Quade got BPJ up when Rios singled in the next at bat.

I guess the only thing I would have done differently is get Marshall up and ready to off-set the Dunn pinch-hit and Pierre AB.
   47. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:20 PM (#3867344)
Like I said, it's just the caveat with a pitcher like Wells. He's not a "stuff" guy, so when the wheels come off, it's not usually a laborious affair.
   48. Spahn Insane Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:20 PM (#3867345)
Right, all good points, on top of the one I made. But it seems to be a recurring thing that he leaves guys in one or two batters too long. I feel like just about every starting pitcher's ERA has about a 1-run "Quade factor" inflation.
   49. Spahn Insane Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:21 PM (#3867346)
Hey, nice job by Bullpen Jesus.
   50. Brian C Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:23 PM (#3867348)
Yeah, just saying, I can see both sides on this one.

Besides, not like it matters. The baseball gods are clearly not going to let the 3-game win streak happen.
   51. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:23 PM (#3867349)
It's tricky with a pitcher like Wells. You don't want to undermine his ability to work out of trouble by pulling him if the opposition strings together some hits in the middle to later innings. But it's a slippery slope because too much rope makes for some really suddenly ugly innings like this one.
   52. SouthSideRyan Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:24 PM (#3867351)
The White Sox are really unlikable.

I mean so are the Cubs, but that's for a different reason.
   53. Spahn Insane Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:24 PM (#3867352)
Bruney? The Cubs should be able to get to this stiff.
   54. Brian C Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:27 PM (#3867357)
Does anyone but me get annoyed by John Cusack these days? Hard to put my finger on why, because I used to be a fan. Seems to have a high Poseur Factor going in these trips to the booth.
   55. SteveM. Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:31 PM (#3867360)
I actually love that Cusack and Eddie Veder seem like real fans, unlike most who do the stretch.
   56. SouthSideRyan Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:33 PM (#3867362)
These days?
   57. Spahn Insane Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:33 PM (#3867363)
Yeah, Brian, I know what you mean. The "poseur factor" lies in his trying to pass off his everyman/lifelong Cub fan thing as authentic, long after he became a star. It seems forced.
   58. Spahn Insane Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:34 PM (#3867365)
Um...ESPN Gamecast doesn't think that was a strike.
   59. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:38 PM (#3867366)
It wasn't. It didn't hit any pare of the plate.
   60. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:40 PM (#3867369)
I find just about any in-booth interview with the guest conductor tedious.
   61. Brian C Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:42 PM (#3867370)
Vedder, yes. I didn't hear him yesterday, but he always sounds like being there is the most awesome thing he could think to do and that Len especially is one of his personal heroes. It's kind of funny, actually.

I get the feeling from Cusack, though, that he followed the Cubs pretty closely as a kid but has stopped really caring, but nonetheless enjoys doing the "famous fan" bit.
   62. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:45 PM (#3867375)
Cubs had better do something here, because they looked LOST against the closer last week.
   63. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:46 PM (#3867377)
Have the Cubs made ALL of their outs to Quentin?
   64. SouthSideRyan Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:47 PM (#3867379)
Agreed Brian. Vedder is legit. Cusack seems more Bill Murray-ish, which is fine, you don't have to be rabid, but don't try and create the myth that you are.
   65. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:51 PM (#3867384)
Meh, I'm feeling really jaded about this one, so I'll bow out now. Until tomorrow, gents.
   66. SteveM. Posted: July 01, 2011 at 08:55 PM (#3867387)
Eddie Vedder is just awesome period. But then again, I am 40 and have long stopped listening to popular music.
   67. SteveM. Posted: July 01, 2011 at 09:07 PM (#3867395)
Ugh. But expected.
   68. Brian C Posted: July 01, 2011 at 09:07 PM (#3867396)
