It's been good, thanks. Summer has decided to stay for August in Seattle, after a mediocre July.

Middle of the night to everyone.
   5. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:16 AM (#3894872)
With these on-field microphones, and new announcers, ESPN has really decided to kill off Sunday Night Baseball, huh?
   6. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:22 AM (#3894875)
I don't care much for Valentine (mostly his voice), but I like Hershiser and whoever the pbp guy is better than Miller/Morgan.
   7. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:28 AM (#3894878)
####### shitty slide. Pedroia is easily safe if he just runs through.
   8. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:28 AM (#3894879)
Ugh. Stupid slide.
   9. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:28 AM (#3894880)
Was Pedroia just trying to break something?

Also, why does Valentine refuse to address whoever the real announcer is?
   10. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:29 AM (#3894881)
He does that way too often.

I was amazed that ball almost got through, didn't seem very hard hit at all.
   11. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:29 AM (#3894882)
Orel, sprinters WOULD dive across the finish line if tracks didn't hurt so goddamned much to land on.
   12. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:31 AM (#3894883)
Sunday Night Baseball with Morgan sucked as well, Fly.

But yeah - it sux a bag of dicks as we speak.
   13. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:34 AM (#3894884)
3 absolutely brilliant pitches to Swisher there
   14. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:35 AM (#3894886)
Disagree, Phil. I loved Morgan. Loved loved loved the Jon/Joe team. I would have much rather had them as an every night pair than Jerry and Don. They're my favorite two man booth I've ever heard. And it's not particularly close.
   15. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:36 AM (#3894887)
Beckett has the good curve tonight. He's getting on top of it.
   16. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:38 AM (#3894888)
I think I would cease watching Red Sox games if 150 games a year involved listening to Joe Morgan.
   17. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:45 AM (#3894893)
I loved Morgan.
Well, he was consistent. Consistently consistent, and he seemed to get more consistent as the years consistently went on.
   18. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:47 AM (#3894894)
I never liked Morgan - was glad when he got the boot - he acted like a lemon in the booth
   19. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:49 AM (#3894895)
Reddick needs to do something - cause the next two wont
   20. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:52 AM (#3894897)
Oh, for ####'s sake.
   21. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:53 AM (#3894898)
Varitek is the worst hitter with bases loaded in history.
   22. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:53 AM (#3894899)
Infield fly? HORRIBLE call.
   23. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:53 AM (#3894900)
jesus - how predictable
   24. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:54 AM (#3894901)
Take 2 strikes.
   25. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:56 AM (#3894903)
Ellsbury grand slam coming up...
   26. ray james Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:56 AM (#3894904)
Morgan was really good at first. But the older he got, the old-foggier he got until he got insufferably old-foggyish.
   27. Answer Guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:56 AM (#3894905)
Phew. Not a total squander at least.
   28. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:59 AM (#3894906)
#### Garcia throws slop - then again - so does three fifths of the sox rotation
   29. Answer Guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 12:59 AM (#3894907)
While they didn't hit anything especially hard that inning, they probably should've done better than one run there. They're making Garcia work at least.
   30. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:00 AM (#3894909)
Averaging nearly 30 minutes/inning. Jeesus.
   31. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:03 AM (#3894911)
Wow, Schilling has packed on the pounds.
   32. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:03 AM (#3894912)
Curt Schilling looks like a fat kid about to boot.
   33. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:03 AM (#3894913)
NO MORE closeups of Schilling. His puffiness and necklessness are very troubling to viewers.
   34. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:04 AM (#3894914)
I really hate Schilling. Ugh.
   35. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:04 AM (#3894915)
He came off the bag, but Scutaro didn't tag him or hold the tag on. Idiot.
   36. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:06 AM (#3894917)
Scutaro did actually have the tag on him for a second while he was off the base.
   37. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:06 AM (#3894918)
I love that Bobby V completely missed that he slid past the bag and Scutaro was holding the tag, and the runner should have absolutely been out.
   38. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:07 AM (#3894920)
I am going to be so annoyed if we get junkballed to death by Garcia.
   39. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:07 AM (#3894921)
Scutaro is an idiot
   40. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:07 AM (#3894922)
It was only for a split-second. When Martin came off the base again, for longer, Scutaro had already swept the tag and was looking at the umpire.
   41. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:08 AM (#3894923)
Sure, MCoA. I'm not saying it was a terrible call. But if you're going to look at it in super slow motion and call Scutaro an idiot, at least notice that he really DID have him out.
   42. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:09 AM (#3894924)
Schilling really knows and loves baseball. I'm actually rather enjoying him in the booth - I liked his little disquisition on throwing fastballs in fastball counts.
   43. booond Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:09 AM (#3894926)
Martin was safe, out, off the bag and safe again.
   44. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:10 AM (#3894928)
Fly - yes, agreed.
   45. ray james Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:11 AM (#3894929)
You know what though? Schilling is a really great commentator. He'll tell you stuff about umps and managers and pitching coaches you don't often hear.
   46. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:12 AM (#3894930)
Chad Ochocinco is a Patriot?

Cool.
   47. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:12 AM (#3894931)
I call Scutaro an idiot 3 to 4 times a week - like I will call Morgan an idiot as well for the rest of my life.

#### - you should have seen me on Saturday night - I was an idiot
   48. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:12 AM (#3894932)
You know what though? Schilling is a really great commentator. He'll tell you stuff about umps and managers and pitching coaches you don't often hear.

None of those things make one a great commentator. You have to have a great voice, and Schilling doesn't have it. I'd read articles by him, but I don't want him coming through my speakers.
   49. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:13 AM (#3894933)
Wasn't expecting to see Garcia walk this many. Does he really just rely on guys chasing these pitches in the dirt and off the black?
   50. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:13 AM (#3894935)
I've always liked Schilling - can see why heaps don't though
   51. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:13 AM (#3894936)
Pedroia's added walks have brought him to a truly elite levels.

Watching Pedroia and Youkilis develop, you wonder about the scouting category of "upside". How valuable is that category if Youkilis and Pedroia can become MVP candidates?
   52. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:16 AM (#3894937)
By the categories of Friday night's chatter, dirty slide by Gonzalez.

Also, that ball was horrifically played by Jeter. Scutaro makes that a pretty easy DP.
   53. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:18 AM (#3894938)
Fly - there's a lot of guys with commentating jobs who have neither good voices nor anything of interest to say. Having quite a few things of interest to say puts Schilling ahead of many of his would-be peers.
   54. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:20 AM (#3894940)
Haven't watched much this year, holy crap does ESPN suck in great and varied ways.

You would last about 5 minutes in Australia watching sport if it was based on voice then - jesus Fly - do you like anything?

Seems the only thing you like here tonight (Joe ####### Morgan) - is pretty much universally laughed at by 95% of baseball fans I know.
   56. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:22 AM (#3894942)

The amazing thing is that it sucks so badly yet it's vastly better than yesterday's FOX broadcast was.

By a power of 100.

As to Schilling, he's a complete ass but not a bad third or fourth man in the booth.
   58. Fancy Pants Handles lap changes with class Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:24 AM (#3894945)
Scutaro makes that a pretty easy DP.

Now there's an indictment.

100%
   59. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:26 AM (#3894947)
That throw was an absolute joke.

Seems the only thing you like here tonight (Joe ####### Morgan) - is pretty much universally laughed at by 95% of baseball fans I know.

The only thing I dislike here tonight is the announcers. The Sox have been playing quite cromulently. It's been a great game.

Funny but neither player projected to have much upside. Neither oozes tools. It was thought they had already maximized themselvescoming in.

Ok - I'm looking forward to Paplebon hopefully pitching later as well
   63. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:33 AM (#3894956)
The announcers haven't been bad. I dont like the three man booth but they bring different perspectives.
   64. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:35 AM (#3894958)
Wow. Didn't think he even had a shot at that off the bat, and he made it look routine.
   65. Answer Guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:35 AM (#3894960)
I thought that was gone. Close one.
   66. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:35 AM (#3894959)

I like Orel - that drip of sweat call was pretty cool.
   67. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:36 AM (#3894961)
Jacoby, if you want that MVP, you gotta slow down at the last second and lay out for that catch.
   68. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:38 AM (#3894963)
Funny but neither player projected to have much upside. Neither oozes tools. It was thought they had already maximized themselvescoming in.
Yeah, that was my point. If a guy has skills to play in MLB, to what degree can anyone really tell that a player has a ceiling on what they can reasonably accomplish?

I can buy "ceiling" with guys who may not even make it out of AA, but once a guy's in the majors, I don't know how much utility the category has.
   69. Phil Coorey is a T-Shirt Salesman Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:38 AM (#3894964)
Kevin Long - what took them so long to mention/interview the messiah?
   70. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:41 AM (#3894965)
It's been pointed out here that Reddick's terrible goat-beard helps make him seem like a part of the team by uglying up his face a notch or two.
   71. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:42 AM (#3894966)
HE'S THROWING SLOP! JUST HIT IT!
   72. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:43 AM (#3894967)
Reddick reminds me of a miniature, left-handed Jayson Werth.
   73. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:44 AM (#3894969)
Nice. Clearing Scutaro this inning, worst case scenario.
   74. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:46 AM (#3894970)
Ellsbury won't come up empty in an RBI situation twice in a row.
   75. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:46 AM (#3894971)
I know I've already jinxed them, but Garcia can't actually get through this lineup a third time, cane he?
   76. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:46 AM (#3894972)
Or apparently he will. ####.
   77. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:51 AM (#3894974)
Wow. That was some kind of ugly hack by Martin.
   78. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:52 AM (#3894975)
Reddick with the ####### CANNON!
   79. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:52 AM (#3894976)
The Chronicles of Reddick continue!
   80. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:52 AM (#3894977)
Good thing those idiot fans who reached down didn't manage to touch that.
   81. booond Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:53 AM (#3894978)
Martin was dead as soon as he made the turn. Bad move.
   82. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:53 AM (#3894979)
Beautifully played by Reddick. I see he's learning his field. (I'm not surprised Martin took the risk - it's not usual for a right-fielder to be able to pick up a bouncer along the wall that easily.)
   83. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:53 AM (#3894980)
####### seriously? Eduardo Nunez? Are we for real here?
   84. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:53 AM (#3894981)
Scutaro made a horrible tag on that play as well.

Seriously? Nuñez is the one who hits a homer?
   85. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:54 AM (#3894982)
Dammit.
   86. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:57 AM (#3894983)
Sure, now that happens.
   87. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:59 AM (#3894984)
Varitek simply cannot catch. he has no shot at throwing people out.
   88. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: August 08, 2011 at 01:59 AM (#3894985)
Jesus Gardner accelerates quickly, those first 3 or 4 slides were incredible.
   89. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:04 AM (#3894986)
That little jump as he gets into position is adorable.
   90. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:05 AM (#3894987)
####. That was practically a pitchout.
   91. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:06 AM (#3894988)
Pedroia picked an off-speed pitch, but Garcia overthrew it for an accidental pitch-out. Bad luck.
   92. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:06 AM (#3894989)
Doesn't Youkilis do the jumping thing too?
   93. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:11 AM (#3894991)
I don't understand the people milling around outside the park right now behind the BBTN desk. Didn't these people pay ~$50 a ticket?
   94. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:12 AM (#3894992)
Doesn't Youkilis do the jumping thing too?
Sure, but he's not 4-7.

Youkilis looks like a bearded fire hydrant with glandular issues, and as such he can never be adorable.
   95. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:17 AM (#3894993)
The wave almost just got Beckett killed. I'm no anti-wave curmudgeon, but that had to be scary.
   96. Dan Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:17 AM (#3894994)
Don't have a great feeling here.
   97. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:20 AM (#3894997)
Beckett seems to have lost his curveball in the last two innings.
   98. Answer Guy Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:22 AM (#3894999)
Yeah, this is scary. I hope someone is warming up...
   99. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 08, 2011 at 02:22 AM (#3895000)
Lucky, lucky, lucky Josh. That was pretty close to a straight-up cookie he served to Swisher. It was outside just enough that Swisher should have taken it to left-center, but I wouldn't want to see him throw a pitch like that to anyone else.

Still no curveballs the whole inning?
