Well, it's a safe bet that Livan will pitch longer than Sosa today. The question becomes, "Can the Braves score enough off of Hernandez to keep the lead safe from the Braves bullpen?" I'm not filled with confidence....

First!

I was just going to make a flippant remark that Sosa was just a set-up man for a blown save, but I decided to look up the stats instead.

Sosa has had 15 starts this year. He is 8-3 in those starts. The braves have won 3 of 4 of the his no decisions. Four no decisions doesn't seem to be that out of the ordinary for a starter that usually only pitches 5-6 innings. He has only pitched more than 6 innings once (7 IP).

I wonder if Cox will try ro push Sosa to pitch longer in the post-season.
   3. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 04:17 PM (#1610248)
Damn it, J Leeds! I guess I should haven't spent the time looking up the stats.

Well, Ted, my post reads well as a response to yours, so if you'd like, pretend it comes after your well-researched post.
   5. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 05:41 PM (#1610419)
I have a bad flashback to the 1997 NLCS every time I see Hernandez pitch.
   6. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 05:42 PM (#1610420)
Sosa just dodged that one. We don't need to be giving up homers to Preston Wilson.

Nice play by Furcal there. We're going to miss that next year.
   7. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 05:43 PM (#1610427)
As long as Eric Gregg's not behind the plate, we're OK.
   8. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 05:44 PM (#1610434)
Hmm...Maybe, just maybe, Sosa can be efficient enough with his pitches to go 7.
   9. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 05:46 PM (#1610442)
Laroche didn't hit into a double play! Progress!
   10. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 05:57 PM (#1610487)
That's a sad definition of progress there Ted. Even more sad is that that was my exact thought.

Another quick inning for Sosa. Maybe we can see seven from him today.
   11. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 06:04 PM (#1610512)
Ted, try to get us some runs while I'm out mowing the grass. I'll be back in a bit.
   12. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 06:18 PM (#1610560)
Done!

But, we'll need a lot more. Have I mentioned that Andruw is my hero?
   13. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 06:24 PM (#1610581)
Awesome! Mccann with a three run shot!
   14. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: September 10, 2005 at 06:44 PM (#1610677)
Sacrificing when down by four runs. Frank Robinson for Manager of the Year.
   15. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 06:52 PM (#1610714)
Way to go Ted! I'll try not to screw things up now that I'm back.
   16. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 06:57 PM (#1610730)
Ya know, Leeds, that if we go on to win this you will be required to mow your lawn in the middle of every braves game until they lose again.
   17. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 06:57 PM (#1610734)
I hate Fox. They mention that Sosa's been efficient, but don't bother to give us an actual pitch count.
   18. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:01 PM (#1610749)
74 through six.
   19. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:01 PM (#1610750)
73 pitches
   20. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:01 PM (#1610751)
OH, MAN! I don't know if I can follow through on that. I'd have to skip school every night game. Which would guarantee that I failed Physics.
   21. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:04 PM (#1610760)
Thanks for the pitch count, guys. I was about to go find it on SportsLine.

####. Lousy slide by Furcal there.
   22. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:13 PM (#1610791)
Well, there's seven. And I can't imagine that he won't come out for the eighth, considering how he cruised through that inning.
   23. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:16 PM (#1610804)
Well, sportsline has crapped out again. If only Sosa can face the Nationals offense in the post season.
   24. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:18 PM (#1610816)
Middle of the 8th, still 4-0. LaRoche hit a long fly to LF. More progress!
   25. JH (in DC) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:19 PM (#1610817)
The Nationals offense cures all pitching ills.

Except for Danny Kolb.
   26. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:20 PM (#1610827)
Well, hopefully there's no chance of seeing Danny today.
   27. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:21 PM (#1610829)
Thanks for the update Leeds. I've switched to gamecast.
   28. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:25 PM (#1610842)
There's eight from Sosa. Amazing. And Hernandez was pinch-hit for, which means that I was wrong about him pitching longer.
   29. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:26 PM (#1610849)
This also means no Danny today. Although I think that was a given, unless the Braves ran the score up. (Or, I suppose, if the Nationals ran the score up.)
   30. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:28 PM (#1610855)
They just showed the Braves dugout. Sosa didn't look like he's done for the day. We'll see in a minute, I guess.
   31. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:28 PM (#1610857)
85 pitches through 8. Will Sosa get his first complete game? I hope we're seeing a preview for the playoffs here. If Sosa can go 7-8 in the playoffs, I like our chances.
   32. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:30 PM (#1610864)
I agree. If we've got three starters that can get to the seventh or eight inning almost every time, then the bullpen problems are a lot less of a problem.

Again with someone other than Marte. Come on, Bobby. Let the rookie have an at bat....
   33. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:32 PM (#1610873)
Sosa's out, BTW. Julio's pinch hitting.
   34. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:33 PM (#1610878)
Maybe Bobby just wants to let Julio set the record for oldest to hit a HR.
   35. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:35 PM (#1610890)
Hard to believe that Julio only has three home runs as a pinch hitter.
   36. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:39 PM (#1610904)
So, who do we see pitch in the bottom of the 9th?
   37. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:40 PM (#1610913)
Farnsworth.

I love it. The Fox guys appeared surprised that Sosa wasn't out there. Uh, guys? Julio Franco pinch hit for Sosa. He can't play anymore.
   38. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:43 PM (#1610925)
Two down.
   39. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:44 PM (#1610928)
And that's the game. Amazing how easy it is if you can keep the middle relief out of the game.
   40. Gaylord Perry the Platypus (oi!) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:48 PM (#1610940)
And now Fox wants to inflict the Yankees-Red Sox game. Featuring McCarver.

Got to find teh remote and changethe channel to college football.
   41. The Ted (now serving waffles) Posted: September 10, 2005 at 07:59 PM (#1610972)
To make the day complete, the Phillies need to beat the Marlins tonight.
