It'll be Garza vs. Buehrle.

Run Differential: -11
SRS Rank: 11th
Season Pace: 44-118
   2. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 07:04 PM (#4110045)
Cubs HR pace: 73
Soriano XBH/GIDP: 0/3
   3. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 07:11 PM (#4110052)
My eyes hurt from the HD picture of Marlins Park. The colors man, the colors.
   4. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 07:29 PM (#4110076)
Soriano strikes out, meaning that his strikeout total on the year (10) is now equal to his total bases (um, also 10).
   5. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 07:30 PM (#4110078)
Soto - also useless.
   6. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 07:31 PM (#4110081)
Brian-are you shocked?
   7. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 07:35 PM (#4110086)
Ha, about what?
   8. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 07:38 PM (#4110088)
Soriano and Soto not being good. This team is almost exactly what we thought they would be. Bad.
   9. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 07:42 PM (#4110093)
I'm a little surprised that Soto looks so awful. And Soriano usually intersperses random homers in his suckage.

I refuse to even look at Byrd's stats to find interesting/depressing things about them.
   10. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 07:50 PM (#4110096)
Oops.
   11. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:01 PM (#4110106)
Oh, make that 11/10 now.
   12. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:02 PM (#4110107)
Soriano is ####### useless. I really hope Theo isn't thinking he will eventually get anything for him and holding onto him. Even if they have to pay him off, its time to for him to move on.
   13. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:05 PM (#4110110)
Good thing Jeff Baker is platooning.
   14. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:10 PM (#4110113)
####### Jeff Baker. Hard to believe the Cubs refused to trade him away last season when they were dumping veterans.
   15. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:15 PM (#4110118)
I've watched too much hockey the last week to put up with this shitty umpiring in baseball now, too.
   16. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:17 PM (#4110119)
Also I ####### hate these stupid ####### Honda commercials. None of them are the slightest ####### bit funny and all just seem horribly ####### lazy.

Sorry to non-WGN viewers who don't know what I'm talking about, I'm just cranky.
   17. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:20 PM (#4110121)
Byrd with hit #3 on the year. A few more of those and he won't even have a negative OPS+ anymore.
   18. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:20 PM (#4110122)
We're all slowly turning into Mets fans with our bitterness.
   19. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:22 PM (#4110124)
Man, is Garza a horrible bunter.
   20. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:23 PM (#4110125)
This team can't even bunt well after spending a great deal of time on it during spring training.
   21. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:24 PM (#4110128)
I'm probably biased, but it seems like the Cubs have had some of the shittiest bunting pitchers for years.
   22. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:26 PM (#4110131)
I'm not actually bitter about the Cubs. I expected a bad year, it's the start of a process, and I can accept it and even be interested in it. As more of the Hendry-era leftovers leave the team, I'll be even happier.

I am bitter about TV commercials, though. I see the advertising world as a vast ocean of cynicism and incompetence, and those Honda ads are some of the worst of the bunch. Just awful.
   23. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:27 PM (#4110132)
I knew they'd be shitty, but I have no tolerance for piss-poor fundamentals.
   24. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:33 PM (#4110135)
Garza is a ray of sunshine on this team. I may be in the minority, but I'd like them to sign him to an extension.
   25. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:34 PM (#4110137)
Holy ####. That ball was smashed.
   26. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:34 PM (#4110138)
In Garza's defense, this is only his second year in an NL organization, and while I don't really know, I'd be surprised if AL franchises really emphasized the skill. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't bother me all that much that he's so terrible at bunting. It just doesn't really matter, it's just painful to watch.

All in all, the team's baserunning has seemed fairly solid, and their defense - Castro's four errors aside - hasn't been all that bad either. I don't think the team has been that terrible fundamentally so far.

Also ... whoops.
   27. Pops Freshenmeyer Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:35 PM (#4110139)
Well, Garza has spent his whole career in the AL.

As for Soriano, I don't really see what would be a better idea. Jackson is still striking out too much in AAA. Plus, it's only a matter of time until Byrd is gone. I imagine the OF will eventually be LaHair, Jackson and DeJesus.
   28. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:35 PM (#4110140)
I like how the park was getting a rep for being so difficult to hit a homer in and then comes along Cubs pitching and it's HR derby.
   29. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:36 PM (#4110141)
I think a potted plant would have more range then Soriano in LF. And perhaps a better concept of the strike zone.
   30. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:42 PM (#4110148)

From a scientific point of view, it sure is convenient that the Cubs are providing a non-homer control group, for comparison's sake.

Hmm ... sad to say, I don't know that anagram, and the best Google can come up with is "reality distortion field", which doesn't seem like what you mean.
   33. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:48 PM (#4110157)
Well this does nothing for Garza's trade value.
   34. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:49 PM (#4110158)
I glanced away for a moment. Should Byrd have caught that ball?
   35. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:51 PM (#4110160)
No, it was in the gap, Byrd had no chance. He did good to prevent it from getting past him.
   36. Pops Freshenmeyer Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4110163)
It's an old lounge-ism... it stands for "Real Damn Funny"
   37. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:54 PM (#4110164)
Ah, well thanks.
   38. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:57 PM (#4110169)
Oh about those fundamentals, Brian, you were saying...?
   39. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:58 PM (#4110170)
Christ.
   40. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:58 PM (#4110171)
This is getting out of hand quickly.
   41. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 08:59 PM (#4110172)
I'm going to give this game a break for a few minutes, and instead watch the Bulls finish beating up on the most hapless NBA team most of us will see in our lives.
   42. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:10 PM (#4110182)
Ooh, I flip back during a commercial just in time to see an extra base hit! That's Baker's first of the year, and now gives him more total bases than strikeouts.
   43. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:15 PM (#4110187)
Well, Bulls game is over. Not much to say about that except that the Bobcats are an embarrassment to professional sports. The Cubs don't really look so bad compared to that shitshow.
   44. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:21 PM (#4110192)
Hey wait a minute, Joe Mather's not a centerfielder, is he?
   45. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:24 PM (#4110195)
I am not sure any of our OF's are true CF's anymore.
   46. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:26 PM (#4110197)
You might be right - I'd be in favor of cutting Reed Johnson and bringing up Campana.

Sappelt plays CF too, right? He's off to a slow start in Iowa but he has a better minor league track record than Mather.
   47. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:29 PM (#4110199)
Valbuena has a double and a homer in his first two AB tonight for Iowa.
   48. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:34 PM (#4110213)
In a park like this, outfielders without range are really exposed
   49. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:40 PM (#4110224)
In a park like [any park], outfielders that just kind of trot to balls in the corner are really exposed.
   50. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:45 PM (#4110228)
The Iowa Cubs are tied for the league lead in HR entering today. Think about that.
   51. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:45 PM (#4110229)
That park is really empty for a stadium that is less then 10 games old.
   52. SteveM. Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:49 PM (#4110231)
That was bad. Really bad. Almost a blessing Ron Santo won't have to suffer through this season.
   53. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:50 PM (#4110232)
I expect this team to lose a lot, but it'd be nice if they weren't getting humiliated regularly.
   54. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2012 at 09:50 PM (#4110233)
Oh well.
   55. SouthSideRyan Posted: April 19, 2012 at 09:43 AM (#4110389)
I'm guessing the chimp won't be up in time for an 11:40 AM start
   56. SouthSideRyan Posted: April 19, 2012 at 09:46 AM (#4110393)
Samardzija: 2-0, 3.95 ERA (We're 1-9 in games not started by Shark? Gross)
Nolasco: 1-0, 3.46 ERA

Run Differential: -19 (Reds are only supposed to be good team worse at -20)
SRS Rank: 14th in NL
Projected Record: 41-121
   57. SouthSideRyan Posted: April 19, 2012 at 11:04 AM (#4110471)
I see the Chimp is taunting me now.
   58. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 19, 2012 at 01:43 PM (#4110618)
Soto sucks and the Marlins' feed picked up his NSFW reaction to that lousy at bat.
   59. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 19, 2012 at 01:51 PM (#4110624)
BPJ also sucks.
   60. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 19, 2012 at 01:55 PM (#4110630)
So who's going to replace BPJ in the rotation?
