The sheer stupidity on the field continues. There's pressing the issue and then there's running into outs.
   2. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:30 AM (#3239845)
Kosuke!
   3. Cabbage Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:31 AM (#3239847)
I was watching Episode III on Spike because I figured even Hayden Christensen would be less painful to watch than the '09 Cubs.

But we're winning after 5, so that's cool.
   4. Cabbage Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:31 AM (#3239848)
You know, Soto's really turned it around.
   5. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:34 AM (#3239852)
That's the only way you'll ever see Don Geo triple. Agreed, though, Cabbage. He's driving the ball a ton.

Wells just missed that one.
   6. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:35 AM (#3239854)
WOW ########
   7. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:38 AM (#3239855)
Looks like I just missed something.

Fuld doesn't see himself as a fill-in, apparently...
   8. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:40 AM (#3239859)
Wells hit a ball down the third-base line that was very close, but called foul. He hit a comebacker to the pitcher, who fumbled and threw it, but it looked late. Umped called Wells out. Lou goes nuts.
   9. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:40 AM (#3239861)
Ha, thanks. Piniella blowups are a good reason for me to miss having TV.
   10. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:43 AM (#3239866)
I want to say, the color commentator for the Pirates is on par with Hawk as far as annoying-as-hell homers go. The Sox are at least good most of the time, which warrants some of the boasting. The Pirates, however, are not a team you should ever be allowed to get arrogant about. I don't think even Hawk has busted out this gem: Ate him up! At his lunch, peanut butter and jelly!!"
   11. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:44 AM (#3239867)
I'm liking this Wells character.

He should be good for one more.
   12. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:46 AM (#3239870)
Ate him up! At his lunch, peanut butter and jelly!!"

I don't care how good your team is. There's nothing that could justify that sort of crap.

Hey, the Pirates ARE within a half dozen of first or so, and it's July. How often have they been able to say that since '92?

Of course, they're still in last place.
   13. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:46 AM (#3239872)
Speaking of it being July, it's 60 degrees in Chicago on July 1.
   14. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:47 AM (#3239873)
So this is what it's like to have your leadoff guy get on base. Hmm.
   15. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:48 AM (#3239874)
Fuld's having a game. Not only that, but his GameDay photo makes him look a little like Pops Freshenmeyer.
   16. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:49 AM (#3239875)
Smoooooth as silk is how Mr. Dumbass announcer called that double play.
   17. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:49 AM (#3239876)
By the way, what's up with Theriot bunting after Fuld's leadoff double in the first? That's the kind of crap Baylor used to pull.
   18. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:50 AM (#3239877)
So this is what it's like to have your leadoff guy get on base.

The next guy GIDPs?
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:51 AM (#3239880)
You do those sorts of things when you've had such trouble scoring runs. Given how the Cubs have hit, trying to get a sure run isn't terribly offending.
   20. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:51 AM (#3239881)
So Hanrahan's in the game. Does that mean Milledge is also available?
   21. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:52 AM (#3239882)
Given how the Cubs have hit, trying to get a sure run isn't terribly offending.

Well, yeah, but if there's any team for whom a runner on third, less than two out isn't a sure run, it's these Cubs.
   22. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:53 AM (#3239884)
I suppose Baylor's bunting after leadoff doubles was worse, given that he had vintage 2001 Sammy Sosa coming up afterwards.
   23. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 12:57 AM (#3239886)
For not being a true centerfielder, Fukudome sure makes enough pretty plays.
   24. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:01 AM (#3239889)
I'm not up on the newfangled defensive metrics, but Kosuke looks just fine out there to me.
   25. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:05 AM (#3239891)
Do Chavez and Vazquez look exactly alike, or did Gameday screw up their photos?
   26. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:06 AM (#3239892)
Fukudome's been right on the money in all of his at-bats tonight.
   27. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:08 AM (#3239893)
Fook starting to drive the ball, with Don Geovany already doing the same, would be very, very welcome. This might start to look like a major league offense again.
   28. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:18 AM (#3239901)
Those are some big runs to leave at second and third with Marmol and Gregg lurking.
   29. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:20 AM (#3239902)
Yep.

Delwyn Young has more homers than Delmon. I find this amusing.
   30. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:20 AM (#3239903)
Good reason to HIT him on a 1-2 count.
   31. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:21 AM (#3239905)
How many feckin' batters has Marmol hit this year? ####'s sake, he seems to do that about every other inning.
   32. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:25 AM (#3239908)
Pretty uneventful inning by Marmol standards. He responded well to our badmouthing.
   33. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:29 AM (#3239911)
In 10 starts, Wells has allowed 4 runs once, 3 runs once, 2 runs 5 times, 1 run once, and zero runs twice. This is his eighth quality start, and one of the non-quality starts was 5 innings scoreless.
   34. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:36 AM (#3239918)
22 pitches for Meek to retire the side in order. That has to be close to a record.
   35. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:37 AM (#3239919)
Time to get our Gregg on.
   36. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:37 AM (#3239920)
They made him work for those outs, that's for sure.

Wells has been a very pleasant surprise. The league's gotta catch up to him eventually, but he's a dandy fifth starter.
   37. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:39 AM (#3239922)
Soriano would've lost that one in the sun.
   38. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:42 AM (#3239926)
Nice and uneventful. Just the way I like it.
   39. meatwad Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:42 AM (#3239927)
thank god they won
   40. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:43 AM (#3239929)
I'm wondering if Wells isn't better than a fifth starter. His peripherals are really strong, and he just seems pretty effortless out there. He also seems kind of unflappable, not that I have anything other than subjective evidence for that.
   41. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:44 AM (#3239930)
A shockingly dull performance from The Two-Headed Monster. Good.
   42. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:45 AM (#3239932)
Meek's 9th inning projects out to a 198-pitch perfect game. With 18 strikeouts.
   43. meatwad Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:46 AM (#3239933)
wells is a nice hidden gem if lilly goes else where once he is a free agent or harden leaves. geo and kfuk starting to hit is nice, hopefully we turn things around and win 8 on the homestand, whould be huge going into the break
   44. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:47 AM (#3239934)
Even if the Cubs were out of the race, it'd be great to see them smack around the Brewers just on general principle. With the race as tight as it is, it becomes mandatory.
   45. retro-shiite Posted: July 02, 2009 at 01:48 AM (#3239936)
The Cubs could theoretically be in sole possession of first place by Sunday evening. Just sayin'.
