Happy Opening Day to all. This is one of my favorite days of the year.

As for the Cubs, I was excited about this team until Brent Lillibridge got on it. But at least you have to tip your cap to the Cubs' shrewd front office, for getting him on the right side of 30!
   5. SouthSideRyan Posted: April 01, 2013 at 12:40 PM (#4400905)
And yes, happy best day of the year. Better weather a week from now please.
   6. Sweet Posted: April 01, 2013 at 01:30 PM (#4400979)
Checking in from 37,000 feet to wish all of you happy baseball. Or whatever it is the Cubs will be playing this year.

(My pessimism is in the best shape of its life.)

Go Cubs!

Happy Base Ball, dear friends. Or casual internet aquaintences, whatever you may be.

Oh hell yes.
   10. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 01:49 PM (#4401014)
That might be the high point of the year. Happy Opening Day to all.
   11. Sweet Posted: April 01, 2013 at 01:50 PM (#4401016)
Anthony Rizzo. Hits home runs. For the Cubs. I like him.
   12. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 01:51 PM (#4401018)
Rizzo gives me hope for the future.
   13. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 01:51 PM (#4401020)
For those that didn't see it, that was a monster HR, to the back row of the stands in dead center.
   14. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 01:59 PM (#4401028)
Maybe Barney is more important then we thought.
   15. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:04 PM (#4401043)
I think I do this every year, but it's fun to see, so here are the first Cubs homers of the past 15 years (inning, game number in parentheses):

2013: Anthony Rizzo (1,1)
2012: Darwin Barney (1,4)
2011: Alfonso Soriano (6,3)
2010: Marlon Byrd (1,1)
2009: Alfonso Soriano (1,1)
2008: Kosuke Fukudome (9,1)
2007: Mark DeRosa (2,3)
2006: Matt Murton (1,1)
2005: Derrek Lee (6,1)
2004: Corey Patterson (1,1)
2003: Corey Patterson (6,1)
2002: Todd Hundley (4,2)
2001: Julio Zuleta (6,4)
2000: Shane Andrews (7,1)
1999: Mark Grace (2,1)
   16. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:06 PM (#4401045)
Good escape by the Shark.
   17. Don Geovany Soto (chris h.) Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:09 PM (#4401052)
2008: Kosuke Fukudome (9,1)

Man, everyone was excited about Kosuke after that one. Friends and I started calling him the "F-Bomb."

We kept calling him that after he fell off a cliff; the nickname easily shifted into the ironic category.
   18. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:09 PM (#4401053)
I missed the Rizzo homer and tuned in just in time to see the Lillibridge era begin.

For what it's worth, the Cubs have been above .500 one day since the end of the 2009 season.
   19. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:15 PM (#4401060)
just in time to see the Lillibridge era begin.

That actually happened in the first inning when he bobbled a grounder. So you missed that, too!
   20. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:17 PM (#4401062)
It's a bit depressing to see Valbuena out there again. I refuse to believe he and Stewart were the best options this season.
   21. Don Geovany Soto (chris h.) Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:19 PM (#4401070)
There goes the no-hitter.
   22. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:32 PM (#4401093)
Castro on pace for 324 hits this season.
   23. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:35 PM (#4401099)
damn the omnichatter sucked me in, lets go cubs
   24. Don Geovany Soto (chris h.) Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:36 PM (#4401101)
And 162 stolen bases.
   25. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:36 PM (#4401102)
castro 1-1 in stolen bases
   26. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:38 PM (#4401104)
gameday shows the umps not calling low strikes today

damnit
   28. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:39 PM (#4401108)
7th year of the Soriano experience. Good times.
   29. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:43 PM (#4401115)
Hard to believe its the 7th year, seems like it will never end
   30. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:46 PM (#4401125)
I still remember Opening Day 2007 and kinda thinking Soriano would smack two or three homers in puny ol' GAB.

I haven't paid attention: Who's Len's new partner? I forgot until recently that Bob left earlier in the off-season. This new guy sounds like the type they get as a last-minute fill-in when the real commentator has a high school graduation to attend.
   31. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:47 PM (#4401128)
By the way, Marlon Byrd is 2-for-3 with 2 RBI today.
   32. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:47 PM (#4401129)
I think it's time to think about an extension for him.
   33. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:48 PM (#4401130)

Former Astros player and broadcaster Jim Deshaies. Sounds a little bland but otherwise inoffensive so far.
   34. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:48 PM (#4401132)
Bob Deshaies from the Astros is Len's new partner.
   35. SouthSideRyan Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:48 PM (#4401133)
Jim Deshaies is the color guy, and he's very very good.
   36. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:49 PM (#4401135)
Coke toBrian with props for getting his name right unlike me.
   37. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:53 PM (#4401144)
By the way ... I think that Pittsburgh is second only to Chicago among American cities in terms of blimp appeal. Growing up, I never thought about Pittsburgh as being an attractive place but it really is.
   38. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:54 PM (#4401146)
I will admit I do not know most of the roster, I could probly guess 15-19 of them thats it.
   39. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:56 PM (#4401154)
God do I irrationally despise Valbuena.
   40. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:56 PM (#4401156)
is lillibridge batboy from the weekly world news all grown up?
   41. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:58 PM (#4401163)
This seemed like a foregone conclusion.
   42. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:58 PM (#4401164)
Lillibridge is half a game into his Cubs career and he's already my new least favorite player.
   43. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:58 PM (#4401165)
well he is now on my #### list
   44. VoodooR Posted: April 01, 2013 at 02:59 PM (#4401167)
Well, I've seen enough of Lillibridge to last the year....
   45. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 01, 2013 at 03:00 PM (#4401170)
It's completely irrational, but Lillibridge's Dumbo ears make him even more unlikeable than his playing abilities already do.
   46. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 03:03 PM (#4401181)
I think hence forth we should call him batboy
   47. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 03:15 PM (#4401212)
bpj has 6 k's through 4
   48. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 01, 2013 at 03:21 PM (#4401233)
I had to run to the post office and missed almost every light on the way there. I feel this is somehow Batboy's fault.
   49. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 03:28 PM (#4401248)
Nate Schierholtz is an on-base machine.
   50. SteveM. Posted: April 01, 2013 at 03:35 PM (#4401257)
Like an idiot I agreed to serve as a panelist for senior thesis for another department today, so I am off. I fully expect Marmol to blow this lead.
   51. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: April 01, 2013 at 03:35 PM (#4401258)
Wellington is having a good day at the plate as well very encouraging for the pkayers with a future
   52. HMS Moses Taylor Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:21 PM (#4401350)
I'm going to have to learn how to spell BPJ's name now, aren't I? I'm happy to eat crow on being wrong on him.
   53. Spahn Insane Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:31 PM (#4401367)
Game score of 86 for Samardzija. Let's see if it's enough for a W...
   54. HMS Moses Taylor Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:32 PM (#4401371)
And I'm going to want to forgot how to spell Marmol's....
   55. Spahn Insane Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:32 PM (#4401372)
Fecking Marmol's gonna blow this, isn't he.
   56. Spahn Insane Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:33 PM (#4401374)
Can we spell Fujikawa?
   57. Spahn Insane Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:34 PM (#4401379)
Good. Russell in. Not that he's inheriting an easy spot.
   58. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:35 PM (#4401381)
Not sure I can take a whole season of Marmol doing this. He's just terrifying.

FWIW he was awful during spring training as well.
   59. Spahn Insane Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:38 PM (#4401387)
Something tells me Marmol's gonna be on a short leash as far as his grip on the closer role's concerned.
   60. HMS Moses Taylor Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:42 PM (#4401399)
Something tells me Marmol's gonna be on a short leash as far as his grip on the closer role's concerned.

GEE, YA THINK? (Sorry, haven't had chance to bust that one out in a while.)
   61. Brian C Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:42 PM (#4401400)
Cubs win! Beautiful.
   62. Spahn Insane Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:43 PM (#4401402)
The Fujikawa era begins in style. Does Marmol get credit for a hold?
   63. HMS Moses Taylor Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:45 PM (#4401404)
Yes, he gets "credit".
   64. VoodooR Posted: April 01, 2013 at 04:57 PM (#4401422)
Above .500!

(First time in years?)
   65. Spahn Insane Posted: April 01, 2013 at 05:05 PM (#4401439)
That makes 2 days over .500 since the end of the '09 season.
