Don't look now, but Jose Lima has been fairly effective over his past ten starts, posting a 5.06 ERA. For him, that's as good as it's going to get.

If it was me running the team, I'd be shutting down El Duque right about now, giving him only a couple starts between now and October as a tuneup, but I don't run the team.
   2. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 06, 2005 at 04:45 PM (#1600040)
I went to the last El Duque KC start -- a sloppy-as-hell win. I hope they hold him to 90 pitches and let Cotts throw two innings if he has to.
   3. VG Posted: September 06, 2005 at 05:50 PM (#1600161)
Our worries about El Duque's workload are nothing new, unfortunately. I think it's a very open question whether El Duque can hold off El Conde™ for the fourth slot in the playoff rotation. I'm really liking what I'm seeing from El Conde™. Take a bow, Don Cooper.

PH, I tried to send you those song lyrics, but both of my e-mails bounced back as undelivered.
   4. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 06, 2005 at 06:03 PM (#1600186)
Quite alright, Vince. We shut down that site, so that email address is no more.

Are they the lyrics to the fight song, or different ones? I got the ones from the mp3, but if they're new/different, email me through primer -- that address is current.
   5. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: September 06, 2005 at 06:26 PM (#1600234)
There's no way I hand the ball to Hernandez over Contreras in the playoffs right now. In fact, I'd give Count the ball in game two. Keep him at home, and away from a hostile environment.
   6. VG Posted: September 06, 2005 at 06:32 PM (#1600247)
PH, if you've got the ones from the MP3 that you linked to the other day, then you've got the same one that I have.
   7. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 06, 2005 at 06:45 PM (#1600271)
Alrighty then.

I'm all for using Hernandez as a swingman/sixth starter/spot starter for the rest of the year and playoffs. I think he'd be a good backup for El Conde™ in case he goes BiTC™ on us.

   9. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:02 AM (#1601062)
Finally, a lineup that looks worse than ours!
   10. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:21 AM (#1601169)
Top of the order getting it done, though it's always a roller coaster when Pods is on third and there are less than two outs.
   11. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:22 AM (#1601181)
Has he been picked off third yet this year?
   12. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:24 AM (#1601187)
Nice job by Paulie, though I would like to see Aaron bring home Iguchi. It's never a good feeling to have two runners in scoring position with zero outs and bring only one home.
   13. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:25 AM (#1601199)
I don't think so, but frankly, there's still time.
   14. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:26 AM (#1601200)
Ask and ye shall receive. Nice job, Aaron.

Gameday Audio is biting hard for me today -- audio is cutting in and out.
   15. CWS Keith plans to [omitted] at [omitted] Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:29 AM (#1601213)
The audio sucks on CSN too, PH. If I were to just listen to the game without watching the TV, I wouldn't be able to tell if it was a sellout or five people in the stands.

Early on in the game Hawk and DJ kept cutting in and out. I don't quite know if that's a good or bad thing.
   16. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:32 AM (#1601229)
Maybe they got stupid filters on the mikes.

C'mon, Duque, don't give the lead back.
   17. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:39 AM (#1601249)
Sloppy but bloodless inning. Thanks to Emil Brown for swinging on 3-0.
   18. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:41 AM (#1601251)
Maybe Emil was a big fan of Chuckie Carr.

How's Duque looking so far? Haven't been able to see much.
   19. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:41 AM (#1601254)
Your eBay is on fire.
   20. CWS Keith plans to [omitted] at [omitted] Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:42 AM (#1601255)
Your eBay!
   21. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:42 AM (#1601258)
I don't know how he looks, but he's getting behind in the count a lot. Hopefully we'll get five innings out of him.
   22. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:44 AM (#1601263)
The Weapon strikes
   23. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:44 AM (#1601264)
Gameday says "Ozuna tripled to deep right." How deep are we talking?
   24. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:45 AM (#1601268)
Line drive over the second baseman's head that split the gap.
   25. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:48 AM (#1601273)
So far so good ...
   26. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:48 AM (#1601274)
Crap. I thought maybe he banged one off the wall. Nice job by the Emperor™ bringing a run home.
   27. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:53 AM (#1601283)
Konerko got around on that one a little too quick.
   28. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:54 AM (#1601286)
And then he takes it to right for the RBI. Nice job.
   29. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:54 AM (#1601290)
Nice job, Paulie. Everybody's doing their job.
   30. CWS Keith plans to [omitted] at [omitted] Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:55 AM (#1601293)
PH, I don't think he'll ever hit a ball harder then the one he hit in Minnesota. I think it was in the Santana/Garcia game.

He smoked that one.
   31. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:56 AM (#1601298)
Except for the leadoff home run this has been a real Smart Ball Inning™.
   32. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:56 AM (#1601299)
I just think it would be sad if T.I.M.O.™, Willie, the Secret Weapon™ and the Widge™ all homered before Pods did. And yet, I kinda want to see that.
   33. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:57 AM (#1601304)
First time I saw Lima pitching with the blond hair I thought, who is this old guy pitching for the Royals?

5-0 after 2. Excellent.
   34. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 12:58 AM (#1601308)
Nice inning, fellas. Scoring four out of five RISP always helps.
   35. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:03 AM (#1601321)
Huh. Seven-pitch inning.
   36. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:11 AM (#1601364)
That might be the fastest inning we'll see tonight.
   37. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:20 AM (#1601396)
El Duque made that inning harder than it should've been, but I'll take it.
   38. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:36 AM (#1601466)
I think this is the typical 2005 El Duque start colliding with the typical 2005 Royals performance. Lots of getting behind in the count, lots of leadoff men on, lots of runners stranded.
   39. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:44 AM (#1601498)
The sixth inning wall for El Duque?
   40. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:45 AM (#1601501)
Another leadoff man on.
   41. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:46 AM (#1601505)
With El Conde, if he goes six quality innings, I don't hold it against him for what happens in innings seven and on.

With Duque, I scale it one inning back. Nice balk.
   42. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:47 AM (#1601508)
I've seen more balks this season than I think I've seen in the previous five seasons combined.
   43. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:47 AM (#1601511)
Scale it back, I meant to say.

Sox killer Mike Sweeney isn't doing anything.
   44. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:49 AM (#1601516)
Cotts is stretching in the bullpen. Stairs hits it to the only fielder in a 90-ft. area.
   45. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:52 AM (#1601526)
Six innings, one-run ball. I'll take it. If we hold this lead, it makes is six straight wins for our starters?
   46. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:54 AM (#1601544)
Nobody beats the Widge™!
   47. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:55 AM (#1601545)
But throws occasionally can.
   48. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:55 AM (#1601547)
Cora needs to settle down. Widger was dead as soon as he hit the bag at third.
   49. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 01:59 AM (#1601576)
Pods thrown out again?
   50. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:01 AM (#1601584)
El Duque is still in there because ... ??
   51. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:02 AM (#1601590)
Ah, for defense. Ne'er mind.
   52. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:02 AM (#1601592)
The Royals are intent on letting him off the hook. What's his pitch count?
   53. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:03 AM (#1601595)
Pods thrown out again?

Buck's got a very good throwing arm, and Lima's a hard pitcher to run on.

That said, Podsednik seems very tentative on the basepaths since coming off the DL. He's running okay, but he seems to be having trouble timing pitchers.

El Duque needs to come out of this game.
   54. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:03 AM (#1601597)
About 100. An alarm should be going off in the Sox dugout.

Too late.
   55. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:04 AM (#1601599)
Of course, right after I say that...

Ozzie doesn't like games that aren't close, apparently.
   56. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:04 AM (#1601600)
pls pull duque thx
   57. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:07 AM (#1601606)
Nice play there by Cotts. I think that was harder than it looked.
   58. VG Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:07 AM (#1601607)
Guillen's really ####### stubborn about pulling El Duque.
   59. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:10 AM (#1601615)
Lean on me.
   60. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:10 AM (#1601616)
He's stubborn about pulling everyone, it seems. But he's gotta get him outta there. He never should have come out for the seventh.

Of course, now there's no margin for error for the bullpen. I guess this is part of simulating playoff conditions?

Vizcaino coming in, looks like.
   61. CWS Keith plans to [omitted] at [omitted] Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:10 AM (#1601619)
Thanks, Ozzie, for screwing with Neal Cotts.

That's what happens when you use him every other month.

Damnit.
   62. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:10 AM (#1601620)
Hindenburg™ time.
   63. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:10 AM (#1601621)
Great. Hindenburg™ in.

Although he's been fairly effective as of late, I'm still not confident in him.

If the Sox blow this game, I'm putting it on Ozzie's plate.
   64. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:12 AM (#1601625)
And if Sweeney homers here, I'm blaming PH for waking him up. :)
   65. Bull Pain Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:13 AM (#1601627)
Ozzie and Cora have been as useful today as they were in their playing careers.
   66. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:14 AM (#1601631)
*whew*
   67. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:14 AM (#1601634)
Everyone's off the hook for now!
   68. VG Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:14 AM (#1601635)
Ozuna has been playing better defense at third. I usually rag on him, so I have to give him some credit.
   69. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:14 AM (#1601636)
Phew. Thanks Ozzie.
   70. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:16 AM (#1601649)
Does Hawk still call this guy "Aflac"?
   71. Tony B Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:17 AM (#1601653)
Now that the Royals are back in the game, Buddy sends in Awfuldt.
   72. VG Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:19 AM (#1601663)
Paul-ie!!!!
   73. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:19 AM (#1601664)
Konerko!
   74. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:19 AM (#1601665)
That helps!
   75. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:20 AM (#1601670)
Paulie! Paulie! Paulie!
   76. Tony B Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:20 AM (#1601672)
Who didn't see that coming?
   77. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:23 AM (#1601680)
Living in Missouri, I heard all about how the Royals were going to be set for the future with Affeldt, Gobble and Greinke. Man, what happened?
   78. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:26 AM (#1601689)
Affeldt has nice stuff; I've never gotten why, other than injury problems, he hasn't been able to establish himself as at least an above-average pitcher.
   79. Tony B Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:27 AM (#1601696)
A combination of overhyping them, rushing them to the bigs, bad/inadequate coaching, and bad attitudes. Affeldt really doesn't want to be in KC. But then who does?
   80. VG Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:28 AM (#1601700)
Matt Stairs, professional hitter.
   81. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:28 AM (#1601701)
Attaboy Ozzie, make sure we push the Royals' lineup around to where Sweeney gets to bat again.

####.
   82. VG Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:29 AM (#1601703)
Goddamnit, Marte.
   83. Tony B Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:30 AM (#1601706)
I thought this game was over after the 2nd inning. Thanks Ozzie!
   84. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:30 AM (#1601707)
Thank God for Paulie.
   85. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:30 AM (#1601708)
So did the Sox offense, apparently.
   86. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:31 AM (#1601710)
Emil Brown has been amazingly good this year.

Of course, this being the Royals, they held onto him for some reason rather than trade him to a team that could actually use him before the trading deadline.
   87. Urban Faber Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:32 AM (#1601712)
Jenks is not going to have anything left if he has to pitch every day ...

At least they didn't bring Adkins back yet.
   88. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:33 AM (#1601715)
Lean on me.
   89. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:38 AM (#1601719)
Big K there. Nice, Cliff. One more.
   90. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:39 AM (#1601721)
Thanks Cliff. Let's get some insurance.
   91. VG Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:39 AM (#1601723)
Nice job getting out of that inning, Cliff.

I assume we'll see Svengoolie™, unless he told Guillen that he's not available today.
   92. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:40 AM (#1601724)
Great. Sisco. Just what we need here.
   93. VG Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:41 AM (#1601726)
Uribe was out on the first pitch two at-bats in a row. C'mon, Juan, don't give up all that improvement at once.
   94. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:41 AM (#1601727)
This Sisco kid isn't a friend of ours.
   95. VG Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:44 AM (#1601733)
This Sisco kid isn’t a friend of ours.

I dunno. He coughed up one game to the Sox in early May with wildness.

Hit-and-run with a guy with electric stuff who can't find the plate. Great idea, Ozzie.
   96. Kadomony Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:46 AM (#1601734)
The Sox have just been positively awful on the bases the last couple days. I've never seen so many pickoffs, CSs, and outfield assists. They really need to avoid doing that in the playoffs.
   97. CWS Keith plans to [omitted] at [omitted] Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:46 AM (#1601736)
Ozuna swinging about four seconds after the ball hit the dirt.

That's RDF...
   98. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:46 AM (#1601737)
Says DJ about the Secret Weapon™ -

"What a year this man his having offensively".

Ozuna's been fairly useful as a 25th man, but he is not a good hitter.

That was an extremely ill-advised hit-and-run. That's not what you do when the opposing pitcher's having trouble finding the plate.

It probably wouldn't have scored anyway, but come on. This is the kind of crap the team pulled all the time last season.
   99. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:46 AM (#1601739)
To his credit, Widger is every bit as good a basestealer as Pods right now.
   100. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: September 07, 2005 at 02:48 AM (#1601742)
Come on, 1-2-3. We don't want to see Sweeney here.
