Where is the discussion about this battle of the ages? Livan Hernandez makes his grand return to the Montreal/Washington franchise, and he faces one of the all-time frozen food legends. I was kind of hoping to hear from everyone else about this, but I guess that it wasn't meant to be.

I see that Pete Orr is continuing his chase for .500 and is unsurprisingly receiving no national attention for it.

Wally Bell is working this game. For an umpire, he has a very good baseball player name.

Orr update: flyout to center. Average drops from .538 to .500.

Al. Gonzalez mans short for the Nationals, and the Padres counter with a shortstop named Cabrera. Hey, you guys, 2003 called.

OK, I just looked up Everth Cabrera, and he actually looks very interesting:

- OPS+ of 109.
- 20/23 in steals.
- 7 triples.
- A .267 batting average but a .356 OBP.
- De Nicaragua. I can now name three of these guys: Dennis Martinez, Marvin Benard, and Cabrera. Not a lousy player between them. Of course, this means that I've simply never heard of the bad Nicaraguans (or I just don't know that they hail from there).
- 22 years old, although I have no idea if there's any speculation about this.
- Already has a baseball-reference sponsor, who links to his own Facebook page.

I'm glad that I got something out of this. It's also nice to know that the Padres aren't just playing replacement-level players around poor Adrian Gonzalez. Some of these guys have futures ahead of them. I'm not watching the game, but I did see Will Venable and Kyle Blanks play, and both looked very good. Kyle Blanks is huge, and, because of this, I really want to see him stick around.

Alberto Gonzalez, on the other hand, looks like the Marlins' Alex Gonzalez with less power. That's how I think of those two - there's the Marlins one and the Blue Jays one.

Adrian Gonzalez singles with one out, which brings up Kevin Kouzmanoff. I wonder, of Kouzmanoff's DPs, how many have occurred with Gonzalez on first. I wonder how many have been with Gonzalez on first and no one else on the bases.

5-4-3.
   10. Sweatpants Posted: September 01, 2009 at 03:45 AM (#3310436)
Orr singles to left, and the average rises to .533.

Livan has gone seven strong. He's losing by one, but you can't complain about five hits, a walk, and five strikeouts through seven.

Stauffer is out after 6.2 with seven hits, a run, three walks, and five strikeouts. I think that this one is a draw.

Luke Gregerson is the worst made-up name I've ever heard. Somebody check that man's papers.

Kouzmanoff GDP, 2009:

1. 4/19, Headley on first, none out (W 6-5 at Mets).
2. 4/25, Headley on first, none out (L 10-1 vs. Pirates).
3. 5/2, Gonzalez on first, Eckstein on third, E. Gonzalez on second, one out (L 2-1 at Dodgers).
4. 5/13, Headley on first, none out (L 6-4 at Cubs).
5. 5/23, Giles on first, one out (W 3-1 vs. Cubs).
6. 5/29, Gonzalez on first, one out (L 3-0 at Rockies).
7. 6/1, Giles on first, Hairston on third, none out (L 5-3 vs. Phillies).
8. 6/3, Gonzalez on first, one out (L 5-1 vs. Phillies).
9. 6/8, Gonzalez on first, none out (W 6-3 vs. Diamondbacks).
10. 6/24, Gonzalez on first, one out (L 4-3 at Mariners).
11. 6/27, Gonzalez on first, none out (W 7-3 at Rangers).
12. 6/29, Gonzalez on first, none out (L 3-1 vs. Astros).
13. 7/2 (1), Gonzalez on first, Cabrera on third, Hairston on second, one out (L 7-1 vs. Astros).
14. 7/21, Gonzalez on first, one out (L 3-2 vs. Marlins).
15. 7/23, Cabrera on first, one out (L 9-4 at Phillies).
16. 7/23, Gonzalez on first, Cabrera on second, one out (L 9-4 vs. Phillies) (2).
17. 7/29, Gonzalez on first, one out (W 7-1 at Reds).
18. 7/30, Gonzalez on first, one out (W 7-4 at Reds).
19. 8/5, Gonzalez on first, Venable on second, one out (L 6-2 vs. Braves).
20. 8/5, Gonzalez on first, one out (L 6-2 vs. Braves) (2).
21. 8/5, Gonzalez on first, one out (L 6-2 vs. Braves) (3).
22. 8/16, Headley on first, Gonzalez on second, none out (L 7-5 at Cardinals).
23. 8/30, Salazar on first, Rodriguez on second, one out (L 6-4 at Marlins).
24. 8/31, Gonzalez on first, one out (W 3-1 vs. Nationals).

16 of his 24 double plays occurred with Adrian Gonzalez on first.

1 of his 24 drove in a run.

Through the first two months, he had grounded into six double plays - not good, but not awful. He moved up in the batting order, though, and started racking them up. He now has 24 through five months, so he's on pace for around 30, if one can be "on pace" for a total of something as unpredictable and context-dependent as GDPs.

He hit into two on July 23rd, but the kicker was two weeks later against Atlanta, when he hit into three, all with Gonzalez on first and one out.

For all of his frustration, he still as an OPS+ of 98. Granted, that's with an OBP of .304, which is bad even by Petco Park standards, but it's not a completely dismal season.

I probably should have kept track of how many happened after a walk to Gonzalez, but I'm not going back and doing that. I don't have a play index; I went through his 2009 gamelogs.

Also: he broke a three-way tie with Miguel Tejada and Yadier Molina for the NL GDP lead. He would have tied Evan Longoria for the major league lead, but Longoria also hit into one today.

Well, it was great discussing this battle of titans. I will absolutely not be doing this tomorrow.

Gracious, I'd be embarrassed if I didn't mention a complete game for the reviled Livan Hernandez. Seven hits and a walk in eight innings.

From 2000 to 2009, Livan leads the majors with 11 complete-game losses. Playing for the Nats will do that for/to you.

Gracious, I'd be embarrassed if I didn't mention - for a third time - that Livan threw a complete game and still lost.
