At this point I'm just hoping Ellsbury didn't have a separated shoulder on that.

Heh.

I guess. It worked, so it worked. And putting pressure on the defense is good, in general.

BV probably treats it a little bit like a chess game. If you make them protect against the steal even for runners like Shoppach, you make more holes for ground balls, or something like that.
   106. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:18 PM (#4105977)
I think 105 has it right. That's the same reason Ortiz tried to run in Toronto, to try and make teams hold him on at first. ANd it would've worked if he had had a bigger lead.

Sundays and the home opener, I think.

Plus, if they can make GBA super adorable every time, I'm all for it.

This is about the furthest thing from cute I could imagine.

That kid was super cute. what are you talking about?

SHUT UP

Don and Jerry are really getting irritating. Do they know that there's a game going on?

It speaks to how bad the NESN broadcasts have gotten that I'm in Florida and usually use MLB.tv but that today I didn't bother to set up a proxy to see the NESN feed and am instead watching the SUN Sports feed on my TV.

Finally, a strikeout! Beckett can only taunt the BABIP gods for so long...
   119. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:40 PM (#4106013)
If this is how Beckett will enter the late phase of his career, I kinda like it.
   120. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:40 PM (#4106014)
I'd let Beckett open the 9th, barring a crooked number in the top half.
   121. Chip Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:40 PM (#4106016)
As Remy pointed out earlier in the game, the Rays have been hacking early in the count a LOT, so not a lot of K opportunities.
   122. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:42 PM (#4106017)
8IP, 94 pitches. Will he close it out?

Concur, especially with this being a 4 game series. A complete day off for the bullpen would be HUGE.

Yes, that is not a good recipe for Ks.

How'd Beckett look? The results seem pretty nice.

Like Mike Maddux, if Maddux could throw 90MPH.
   127. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:47 PM (#4106028)
McDonald's had several very nice little at-bats today.

He's cutting most of his fastballs, and throwing 88-91 for the most part. He's thrown some good changeups and curves, but hasn't relied on either pitch that much. I dunno. He's been pretty good, but I'm not sure this is a recipe for success unless he can increase his use of the curve.
   129. Textbook Editor Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:49 PM (#4106031)
From Extra Bases:

Ellsbury update: Red Sox announce only that he has a "right shoulder injury" and will be evaluated further.

If only these "updates" had been around in 1536; blogs back then might have reported something like:

From the royal family of England: Anne Bolelyn has a head and neck injury, and will be evaluated further.
   130. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:49 PM (#4106032)
Shoppach too. They've both looked less like short side platoon guys than Ross has.
   131. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:51 PM (#4106034)
Well, that's good to hear. If Beckett can transition from being a dumbass with great stuff to a thinking pitcher with good stuff, then I'd be thrilled.

Did you see Colbert's bit on Grassley's tweets? Colbert has been imitating them. Hilarious.
   133. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:53 PM (#4106038)
Beckett pitched like that guy for most of last year. His velocity was down last year, especially early, though not quite this low, and he was using the cutter and changeup a lot more than he had in the past.
   134. Textbook Editor Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:53 PM (#4106039)
#132--I did not... will have to look that up. Thanks for the tip!
   135. Joel W Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:53 PM (#4106040)
Hopefully Jacoby Ellsbury is a mere Paul Pierce, writhing in pain when nothing is terribly wrong. 2010 does not inspire confidence on that front unfortunately.
   136. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:58 PM (#4106044)
Shoppach!!
   137. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:58 PM (#4106045)
Wooo!

Please don't make us watch game after game of Ross-McDonald-Sweeney as the starting OF...
   139. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:59 PM (#4106048)
The Rays bullpen seems kinda shitty if Peralta is going to suck.
   140. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:59 PM (#4106049)
Beckett pitched like that guy for most of last year.
I don't really agree. Even when his average velocity was down, Beckett always seemed to have a 94-95 mph fastball in his back pocket if he needed it. He hasn't shown that capacity for a big fastball yet this year, which is worrisome.
   141. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:01 PM (#4106052)
See Fangraphs velocity charts. Other than one or two games last season - admittedly one of them being his first start - Beckett always had a peak velocity of 94 or better.
   142. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:01 PM (#4106053)
Is this the rapist Lueke or another Lueke?
   143. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:02 PM (#4106054)
And Shoppach should be the starting catcher. I'm sick of Salty already.
   144. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:03 PM (#4106055)
More runs!!

Continue to enjoy the way the Sox are putting pressure on defenses.
   145. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:04 PM (#4106058)
It's the same Lueke. He went from Texas to Seattle in the Cliff Lee trade, then this winter he was traded to the Rays for John Jaso.

I'm a big Shoppach fan, I advocated the Sox signing him this winter, but he's a platoon guy. He had like a ~.400 OPS vs RHP last year.
   147. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:05 PM (#4106060)
Lighting up the Rays' pen like this in the first game of a 4 game series is pretty swell.
   148. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:07 PM (#4106061)
And doing it to the rapist Lueke is just frosting.
   149. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:08 PM (#4106062)
And the Red Sox climb up the Pythagorean standings...
   150. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:09 PM (#4106063)
(And I know the Sox should continue to platoon Salty and Shoppy. I'm just sick of Saltalamacchia is all.)
   151. Dale Sams Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:11 PM (#4106065)
And the next five games they will fail to score a run.
   152. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:13 PM (#4106066)
10 in a row!
   153. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:14 PM (#4106068)
I think I'd consider taking 2 strikes if I were Ross here.
   154. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:15 PM (#4106069)
Come on, Dale, have a little fun.
   155. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:15 PM (#4106070)
I think I'd go to someone like Bowden for the 9th at this point. Beckett's been sitting for quite a while.
   156. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:17 PM (#4106072)
Yeah, Beckett's day has to be over.

You could go to Thomas, since he's almost certain to be DFA'd. Or you could give a little try-out to Albers or Bowden.
   157. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:18 PM (#4106073)
Was that Aceves still up in the bullpen?
   158. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:18 PM (#4106076)
I mean, not only are the Red Sox running away with the game, they're embarrassing one of the truly reprehensible human beings in the game. This is great.
   159. Chip Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:20 PM (#4106080)
Melancon is the one warming.
   160. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:21 PM (#4106082)
Oh good. This a the perfect opportunity for Melancon to get his #### together.
   161. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:21 PM (#4106083)
Oh, that's not a bad idea. He clearly needs to work on his stuff.
   162. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:23 PM (#4106086)
How often do you score 12 runs without a single home run?
   163. Dale Sams Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:23 PM (#4106087)
That wasn't a dislocation. he would have been writhing more.

Not at all. I played soccer and had an 'impingement' that I played through. Couple of years later when I swung my arm up to get a ball (I was playing goalie) it went right out of the socket and I lay there unable to move my left arm, pushed myself up with the right and pulled it back in....then kept playing.

But yeah, if it were tore out, I'd say you were right. So my point was pointless.
   164. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:24 PM (#4106088)
Melancon still looks like crap.
   165. Dale Sams Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:25 PM (#4106090)
Come on, Dale, have a little fun.

When they win two in a row, I will try and shut up for a month.
   166. Dale Sams Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:25 PM (#4106094)
Woot! My Fantasy 2B!
   167. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:25 PM (#4106095)
Yup. There's something wrong with this dude.
   168. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:26 PM (#4106096)
Melancon still looks like crap.

Ben Zobrist agrees.

I can't believe they traded Lowrie for this stiff.
   169. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:27 PM (#4106097)
I thought Melancon had some sink on his fastball or something. This is a AAA pitch he's throwing right now.
   170. Dale Sams Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:27 PM (#4106098)
If Lowrie wern't made of glass, I'd be livid.
   171. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:29 PM (#4106100)
Well, hopefully that helped him work through some stuff. Satisfying win. I thought Price was really gonna shut them down today.
   172. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:31 PM (#4106101)
So what if Lowrie's made of glass? 150 AB a year from him is worth more than 50 IP of a mediocre reliever.

And Weiland is probably about equal or better as a short reliever anyway.
   173. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 05:32 PM (#4106103)
Now we get to wait for the other shoe to drop on Ellsbury...
