Great going, Red Sox, you had to go and win two straight to ruin my Titanic jokes. But, hey, it sank today, so..... still a chance!

What is this angle all about? It's lower than normal.

Wish I could watch the TBS coveage. But it's blacked out here in Florida.

Doubront looks pretty good so far. Good FB, good curve.

Lot of outside corner pitches. Doubront seems to be hitting his spots.

I saw that yesterday. Really puts into perspective how important 42 was.

Doubront looks great.

He's really pounding the outside corner to RH batters and the inside corner for LH batters (so, same side of the plate). nice control.

AND as I type this he busts an RH inside. nice.

Interview with Branca on TBS talking about the shot heard round the world. One of the better parts of Don Delillo's otherwise irritating Underworld is the story of the ball that Branca hit.

Is it Stockholm syndrome, or was that little bit between Don and Jerry about the Ross interview actually humorous?

Filthy changeup to start Ross's AB.
   20. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:05 PM (#4107046)
Why didn't he catch that ball?
Right field is very large, and it was ripped. I didn't think it was going to be caught, off the bat.

awesome
   22. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:06 PM (#4107048)
Yes!

This is the Cody Ross I thought we'd see in Fenway.

For all those ninnies who complained about Ortiz's contract being responsible for the starting rotation, Youk's decline, and the fall of western civilization: suck it.

He pulled his glove down. He could have caught it I thought on the RF camera angle.

Holy Cripes. That was crushed.
   26. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:07 PM (#4107052)
I think it was more impressive that Zobrist got close to that ball than it's a knock that he didn't catch it. It was a ####### rocket line drive that went ~375 feet on a line to RF.
   27. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:09 PM (#4107053)
For all those ninnies who complained...
Ok, Dale.
   28. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:09 PM (#4107054)
According to the TB announcers, Moore just needs to move the hitters' feet. They're too comfortable! THAT's why the Sox are scoring runs, not bad pitches.
   29. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:10 PM (#4107057)
I was super glad to see Ortiz back on a 1 year deal. I was afraid it would take a 3 year contract to keep him.

Ok, Dale.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player.
   32. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:17 PM (#4107065)
According to the TB announcers, Moore just needs to move the hitters' feet. They're too comfortable! THAT's why the Sox are scoring runs, not bad pitches.
In his first start, Moore threw far too many fastballs. Every important pitch, he tried to throw a great fastball to the corners. He walked too many, and even with that fastball, sometimes they'll hit if they know it's coming.

Today, he's trying to throw lots of curves and changeups, and he's trying to be less perfect in the zone. With the result that he's left some bad pitches in the middle of the plate.

I think Matt Moore doesn't know how to pitch yet. With his stuff in the minors, I don't think he had to learn. And with his stuff, he could easily blank the Red Sox over the next five innings just throwing the ball.
   33. toratoratora Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:20 PM (#4107067)
Nice bounce for the Sox
   34. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:20 PM (#4107068)
That ball looked catchable.
   35. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:21 PM (#4107070)
That was more catchable than the one to Zobrist
   36. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:21 PM (#4107071)
That's a ball that should have been caught. Ross slowed down twice on the way back, and both times he had to accelerate again. Bad read.
   37. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:21 PM (#4107072)
That curve was a strike.
   38. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:24 PM (#4107074)
Batting Pena second against lefties is really dumb.

I like Joe Maddon a lot, but it's very clear that we'd be quite annoyed with him at regular intervals through the season if he were Sox manager.
   39. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:24 PM (#4107075)
Man I know he's the tying run and it's early, but I'd be awfully tempted not to pitch to Longoria with Keppenger behind him.
   40. toratoratora Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:25 PM (#4107076)
And some nice pitching to get out of the jam. Those two quick strikes on Longoria were sweet
   41. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:26 PM (#4107079)
Mikael I think Maddon's issue with the lineup against lefties is simply a lack of personnel. They don't have anyone to platoon with Peña, they don't have anyone to platoon with Scott (who might need it less), and they have to start Joyce against LHP while Upton is on the DL. Peña 2nd against RHP is really good, so if he's going to play against LHP too, it's really just the path of least resistance to keep him in the 2 spot. They just don't have many good hitters againt left-handed pitching.
   42. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:30 PM (#4107080)
I suspect that Maddon might be operating with out of date information and scouting reports on Doubront as well. Maddon LOVES stacking his lineup to exploit pitchers with reverse platoon splits; Rays fans call it "Danks Theory". When he first came up from the minors, Doubront was a reverse split guy. His 4-seamer had natural cut and his changeup was his primary offspeed ptich, so he struggled to retire left-handed hitters. Peña batting 2nd might be with the expectation of facing THAT Doubront rather than the current incarnation which appears to be a more traditional 4-seamer/curveball guy, especially against LHH.
   43. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4107083)
Moore seems to be locating the fastball much better now.
   44. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:36 PM (#4107084)
Doubront's getting squeezed against Keppinger here.
   45. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:37 PM (#4107085)
THAT falls for a groundrule double? Ugh.
   46. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:39 PM (#4107088)
I suppose that getting caught evens out the karma.
   47. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:43 PM (#4107094)
Wow. I didn't think there was any way Aviles would get a glove on that. And heads up to throw behind the runner.
   48. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:43 PM (#4107095)
Whoa!
   49. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:43 PM (#4107096)
Heads-up play by Aviles there. Nice work. (Obviously, with an assist from the baserunner.)
   50. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:47 PM (#4107099)
Honestly it's hard to blame the baserunner or 3B coach on that. Aviles was like 10 feet into the OF when he dove and fielded that. 99% of th etime a ball that gets that far out of the infield goes all the way to the CFer and the guy scores easily.
   51. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:48 PM (#4107101)
Does Rodriguez field that ball if Peña lets it go and covers first?
   52. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:53 PM (#4107103)
Moore is getting calls off of the plate against RHH that Doubront hasn't been.
   53. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:55 PM (#4107106)
That ball didnt' seem like it go far enough away from Longoria to try scoring.
   54. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 02:57 PM (#4107113)
What just happened there? I was foolishly doing some writing and wasn't watching the tv.
   55. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:00 PM (#4107116)
Shoppach hit a screamer low off the Monster. Ross didn't slide into third and was lucky to be safe as the throw bounced away from Longoria. However it only bounced about 15 or 20 feet away, so when Ross tried to score he was out easily at home.
   56. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:05 PM (#4107120)
Barely foul. You really can't throw Carlos Peña a fastball that high.
   57. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:05 PM (#4107121)
Did that hit the pole? On one replay it looked like it hit the foul side of the pole. ####.
   58. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:05 PM (#4107122)
Nope, it's foul.
   59. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:10 PM (#4107127)
Repko ####### sucks. A guy who can't hit should at least be able to catch that.
   60. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:11 PM (#4107129)
This outfield defense is a ####### joke.
   61. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:12 PM (#4107130)
Liner to Youkilis. Clank.

Liner to Repko. Clank.

Flyball to Ross. Clank.
   62. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:14 PM (#4107133)
That's 2 balls Ross should have caught that went for "doubles".
   63. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:15 PM (#4107135)
You know who would be a nice fit for this team right now?

Coco Crisp. Make it happen, Ben.
   64. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:25 PM (#4107140)
This has to be Doubront's last inning. 92 pitches already.
   65. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:26 PM (#4107141)
That was the worst Red Sox defense I've seen since, well, the end of last year.

Doubront was hit pretty damn hard at for four batters in the 5th. I'm pretty surprised to see him come back out. It is the bottom of the lineup, though...
   66. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:27 PM (#4107142)
Let's see if BV pulls him.
   67. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:30 PM (#4107145)
Just hold the ball. I hate those throws.
   68. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:31 PM (#4107146)
I don't mind the decision, even though it was the wrong call. Early in the season, trying to stretch out your young pitcher. Get him thinking about what he needs to do to get into the 6th and 7th. Shocked to see Atchison here after Padilla was warming up middle of the last inning. What the hell was Aviles doing throwing that ball??
   69. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:32 PM (#4107149)
And atchison is the shitty pitcher I thought he was. The 3 innings in Toronto are the exception.
   70. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:33 PM (#4107150)
Help where's the short hook with Atchison? This game is going to get out of hand if Atchison gets to face Peña.
   71. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:36 PM (#4107157)
He was surprisingly good last year too, Dan. But I can understand why anyone would be blacking last year out of their memory. Scott's got no feel for the strike zone today. Lucky there's a shitty hitter up there trying to bunt.
   72. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:37 PM (#4107158)
Wow, trying to bunt on 2-2?? Thank you!
   73. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:37 PM (#4107159)
None of those pitches to Gimenez were in the strike zone. Easily could have bases loaded with 0 outs.

Thank god BV is pulling Atchison.
   74. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:37 PM (#4107160)
On a hanging curveball too. He could have knocked that out of the park.
   75. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:38 PM (#4107161)
Padilla.
   76. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:40 PM (#4107163)
Atchison was somewhat effective last year yes, but I still don't believe in him. His only decent pitch is his slider, and that's only a good pitch vs RHH. His fastball is a home run waiting to happen, and he has no real weapons against LHH.
   77. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:41 PM (#4107164)
Padilla!
   78. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:41 PM (#4107165)
Wow.
   79. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:42 PM (#4107166)
Thanks Pena.
   80. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:45 PM (#4107168)
I can't believe the Red Sox are exposing Bowden to waivers rather than sending say Justin Thomas down. Isn't the 2nd lefty who has never shown any effectiveness more of a luxury than a 25 year-old who's got good control of 93 mph (if incredibly flat) fastball?
   81. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:46 PM (#4107169)
Padilla looked GOOD there. Yeah, I don't have much faith in Atchison either. But the problem he had that inning wasn't that he didn't have stuff. It was moving all over the place there. He just didn't have a clue how to control it.
   82. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:48 PM (#4107171)
Wow, Papi crushing.
   83. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:49 PM (#4107172)
Papi's looking good.
   84. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:50 PM (#4107174)
Ha!
   85. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:50 PM (#4107175)
Never been so happy to be wrong as when I thought he was done at the start of 2010
   86. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:51 PM (#4107176)
Intentional walk to Cody Ross is way overmanaging.
   87. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:53 PM (#4107178)
If McDonald can't at least hit the ball solidly on a tiring lefty, there shouldn't be a place for him on the roster when everybody comes back.
   88. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:53 PM (#4107179)
Intentional walk to Shoppach to load the bases?
   89. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:54 PM (#4107181)
Especially with McDonald coming up who at least has a history of being a lefty masher.
   90. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:54 PM (#4107182)
IBBing Ross with a LHP on the mound is actually not a bad move. Neither is IBBing Shop with ####### Repko on deck.
   91. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:54 PM (#4107183)
Dude, Maddon is way overthinking this. These hitters all suck.
   92. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:54 PM (#4107184)
Ross and Shop are both over 900 OPS vs LHP in their careers.
   93. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:55 PM (#4107186)
According to gameday and the TBS on screen thing, those 2 balls were K's.
   94. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:56 PM (#4107187)
Wow, Maddon is really trying to give up that #1 manager ranking he got from someone who doesn't know much about it.

He got lucky about that working out.
   95. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:58 PM (#4107189)
You guys want a refurbished Marlon Byrd for all your centerfielding needs?
   96. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:58 PM (#4107190)
########. Maddon made the right moves there.
   97. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 03:59 PM (#4107192)
Marlon Byrd is the same problem as Ross, McDonald, and Sweeney. He's a tweener. We already have like 6 of those guys. We need someone who can actually catch balls in center field (e.g. Crisp).
   98. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:02 PM (#4107194)
Really disagree with walking Shoppach there. Yeah, you might be marginally more likely to see a negative outcome with Shoppach than Repko with all things being equal. But things are not equal when you don't have anywhere to put Repko, when you've got the top of the order closer.
   99. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:02 PM (#4107195)
####### batting practice pitch. zobrist was looking for it.
   100. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:02 PM (#4107196)
I think Zobrist is the first one to swing at the eephus from Padilla this season.
