Scott kinda scares me vs Padilla here.
   102. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:07 PM (#4107199)
Situationally, you're really only worried about BA there for Shoppach and OBP for Repko. Otherwise we're worrying too much about the 4th run of lead with three innings to go. Shoppach is .271 BA vs lefties, Repko is .309 OBP vs. lefties. I didn't realize Repko was so bad. Now I'd really make it a wash between the two moves.
   103. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:09 PM (#4107200)
Repko is just a complete zero. He's the definition of replacement player. Not good enough glove to play CF, not good enough bat to really warrant starting anywhere. Not fast enough to steal bases.
   104. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:10 PM (#4107201)
Moore in to start the 8th.
   105. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:10 PM (#4107202)
Er, bottom of the 7th.
   106. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:12 PM (#4107203)
Wow, with 98 pitches, the top of the order coming up...but he has handled the top of the order today. 0-3 for 1-2-3.
   107. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:13 PM (#4107204)
Aviles has a lot more power in his bat than I thought.
   108. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:13 PM (#4107205)
Bad pitch. Good hit. Bad decision by Maddon.
   109. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:14 PM (#4107206)
His fastball is just as fast, but it has no life now.
   110. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:15 PM (#4107208)
He was lucky not to give up B2B.
   111. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:15 PM (#4107209)
Batting practice right now.
   112. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:17 PM (#4107212)
A bit overzealous of Maddon to try and steal an extra inning from Moore and save the bullpen. Didn't pay off. That move was right out of Francona's playbook. I think after he got out of that bases loaded jam, you need to go to someone else with 2 RHH due up to start the 7th and Moore having had to work so hard in the 6th.
   113. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:18 PM (#4107213)
One thing in Maddon's defense...that bullpen is pretty terrible.
   114. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:19 PM (#4107215)
Tough for Youk when that pitch is called a strike.
   115. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:19 PM (#4107216)
I think this inning is a good example of how one game influences the next. With his bullpen worn out by the last two days, Maddon tried to squeeze a few more outs from Moore.

This is a pretty heavy work load for a 22 year old in back to back starts. A lot of high stress pitches in the two games.
   116. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:21 PM (#4107217)
Wow, Youk should be putting that over the Monster. 91 mph with no real movement.
   117. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:21 PM (#4107218)
I've been impressed with Aviles so far. He has a really nice swing.
   118. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:22 PM (#4107221)
MCoA, yeah that too. Youk is looking like he has a slider speed bat right now. And we all know how shitty he is at hitting the slider.
   119. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:24 PM (#4107222)
To me the thing with Aviles has been the power. He's shown the ability to hit for average in the past, but he's nota guy I pictured hitting homers to dead center into the batter's eye at Fenway.
   120. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:27 PM (#4107223)
Molina batting for Joyce? Even against a lefty, that's pretty sad when Jose Molina is your RHH off the bench.
   121. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:27 PM (#4107225)
I agree about Aviles's power...but it looks like the ball is carrying pretty well today, doesn't it.
   122. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:28 PM (#4107227)
That's why you carry three catchers, so Jose Molina can pinch hit in the 8th inning of a 2-run game!
   123. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:31 PM (#4107228)
And, Molina makes Maddon look like a genius. Had to come in there, Smoltz. The ball was down and away out of the strike zone. But it's Jose Molina. No pitch within 2 feet of the strike zone is safe!
   124. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:31 PM (#4107229)
Again, a good pitch and a bad outcome.
   125. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:32 PM (#4107230)
And a bad one and a good outcome. Baseball's a funny game.
   126. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:32 PM (#4107231)
They don't have 3 catchers.
   127. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:33 PM (#4107232)
Did they send Lobaton down?
   128. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:33 PM (#4107233)
Ah, injury.
   129. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:33 PM (#4107234)
Lobaton went to the DL with a bum shoulder.
   130. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:34 PM (#4107235)
That's just wrong. A great pitch, and he doesn't get the call.
   131. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:35 PM (#4107236)
Aviles looks far better on defense than Scutaro did to my eyes.
   132. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:37 PM (#4107237)
Nice pitching by Morales all up. First pitch strikes to all but Molina. And you don't worry too much about walking Molina. It doesn't happen all that often, and when it does, it serves to clog the bases something fierce.
   133. Tim Dawson Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:38 PM (#4107239)
I agree about Aviles's D. In spite of the silly throw trying to make a highlight reel.
   134. toratoratora Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:51 PM (#4107248)
That was a nice win. Early game manana-11 AM start.
   135. Dan Posted: April 15, 2012 at 04:52 PM (#4107249)
Nice win indeed. Great work by the bullpen.Padilla-Morales-Aceves all impressed.

Doubront wasn't bad, gave up some hard contact, but with good outfield defense he's probably 6 IP, 2 runs or so.

Those were warning track balls hit with striking regularity. He'll have to work on that a bit.
