I did some poking on BBRef which has games going back to 1918. Longest game I found was 13 innings a few times;

April 15, 1991. Sox lost in 13 to Cleveland 1-0. I don't remember John McNamara managing the Indians but apparently he did. Brook Jacoby the GW HR.

April 19, 1971 was Indians 5, Red Sox 4. Roy Foster a two run homer off Bill Lee to win it.

April 20, 1992 Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 4. Robbie Alomar RBI double and a Joe Carter single provided the winning runs.

I was doing this by eyeball so maybe I'm missed one but I can't find any record of the Sox ever winning an extra inning game on Patriot's Day.

They are indeed, hooray for Patriot's Day!

Do these guys have lunch reservations or something?
   7. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:19 AM (#4107644)
Wow. Great curve.
   8. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:19 AM (#4107646)
Which guys?
   9. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:20 AM (#4107648)
Pitch F/X says that curve was a slider. I disagree. What do you guys think?
   10. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:20 AM (#4107649)
Let's move it along. Either he can play or he can't.
   11. FancyPantsHandle glistening with foreign substance Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:21 AM (#4107650)
The player guys (I posted that before the Zobrist PA, they just seemed to be going quickly on both sides...)
   12. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:21 AM (#4107651)
I think Bard's slider sometimes looks more like a curve depending on the arm angle he throws it from, but it's still the same pitch.
   13. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:22 AM (#4107652)
Bard seems to be doing a good job holding the reins on the FB.
   14. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:22 AM (#4107654)
Is the book on Joyce that he can't hit the up-and-away pitch?
   15. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:23 AM (#4107656)
Bard seems to be doing a good job holding the reins on the FB.

I was just about to comment on this. Bard seems to be doing a much better job of pacing himself today, at least so far.
   16. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:24 AM (#4107659)
A lot of pitches up in the zone though. I'd like to see him keep it down a bit.
   17. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:24 AM (#4107660)
I guess it is the slider.
   18. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:25 AM (#4107663)
not really hitting his spots. Catcher was set up outside and that was up and in.
   19. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:26 AM (#4107664)
Walking Keppinger is lame.
   20. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:26 AM (#4107665)
He should go to that slider more. He's hitting spots with that.
   21. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:26 AM (#4107666)
Following on GameDay it seems like Bard is working pretty quickly.
   22. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:27 AM (#4107667)
Off the bat, I was sure that was going to fall in. Phew.
   23. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:27 AM (#4107668)
Nice catch by Sweeney.

Bard is working quickly but is a bit wild with the FB.
   24. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:28 AM (#4107670)
The decline in quality from the Extra Bases in-game blog from when Peter Abraham does it to when Nick Cafardo or Michael Vega does it is pretty dramatic.
   25. Joel W Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:29 AM (#4107671)
23 pitches for Bard through 2 is nice.

The nice thing about throwing as hard as Bard does is that you are more likely to be effective even if you aren't hitting your spots. I imagine he's trying to save the slider for when he's in more high leverage situations. Bard, from everything I can gather, is a heady guy and hopefully he really thinks about those sorts of things.
   26. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:30 AM (#4107675)
That's what he did Tuesday night. The first three innings were fastball after fastball with the odd slider mixed in. The 4th and 5th were a lot more sliders and changeups.
   27. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:31 AM (#4107676)
I like Papi consistently trying to go the other way even if he grounds out like that. He's gonna pressure the defense until they give up on the shift.
   28. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:32 AM (#4107678)
Bard's a sharp dude. I'm sure he's very conscious of saving stuff in reserve. In his first start I think that strategy was scuttled just by the sheer amount of adrenaline he had going for his first start, but from here on our I imagine he'll approach his games like Verlander does now, coming out early throwing 92-94 and saving the upper 90s heat for later in games and for jams.
   29. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:34 AM (#4107680)
It's the 2nd inning. Already with the pointless banter?
   30. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:37 AM (#4107681)
I've got the Rays feed. What foolishness are they on about now on NESN?
   31. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:37 AM (#4107682)
To the slider to begin the inning.

The "Dontourage." I have no idea what that's about, but they weren't talking about baseball.
   33. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:38 AM (#4107684)
3 sliders and one FB.
   34. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:39 AM (#4107685)
This is ridiculous. Those are strikes.
   35. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:40 AM (#4107687)
That should have been a K.
   36. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:41 AM (#4107688)
Rays announcers talking about Bard's breaking ball, whether it's a curve, a slider, both, or just him changing speeds on it.
   37. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:41 AM (#4107689)
That was a nice FB. Lot of movement at 92.
   38. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:43 AM (#4107691)
Salty had no shot at getting Jennings on that.
   39. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:43 AM (#4107693)
What that the changeup?
   40. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:45 AM (#4107694)
Slider is unhittable today.
   41. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:45 AM (#4107696)
Yeah he threw a changeup to Peña. I think Peña's first inning lineout was on a changeup too.
   42. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:45 AM (#4107697)
Don't let Longoria beat you here.

Dick. that was a strike.

This early in the game I'd come after Longoria with Scott on deck. Scott is pretty tough on righties.
   45. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:46 AM (#4107701)
This ump sucks. Won't call a high strike.
   46. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:46 AM (#4107702)
95 there. I think that's the hardest FB he's thrown early.

   48. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:48 AM (#4107706)

   49. Joel W Posted: April 16, 2012 at 11:48 AM (#4107709)
The speed differential between the fastball and the slider is just awesome.

Holy ####, Aviles. Picks the throw from the dirt and turns the DP like it's nothing.

Gonzalez is such a terrible baserunner. Even a guy as slow as him needs to be on 2nd after that.
   70. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:11 PM (#4107749)
Geez. If Gonzalez had run they might they have called him out because of Papi's "interference" there?
   71. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:12 PM (#4107751)
I wish I could watch the Rays feed on mlb.tv. I could go for some Laura McKeenam.

And it bites them in the ass as Ortiz hits into a DP.

   74. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:13 PM (#4107754)
#askremy might get your question on the air.
   75. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:14 PM (#4107756)
If Gonzales could run, that might have been an RBI groundout....instead of single, no advance, dp, it could have been double, advance to third, RBI.....then again I didn't see the wall ball.
   76. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:15 PM (#4107757)
I wish I could watch the Rays feed on mlb.tv. I could go for some Laura McKeenam.

They haven't shown her. I think she only does home games anyway. It's pretty amazing how big of an upgrade she is over their old sideline chick, Angela Jacobs. Good lord she was hideous.
   77. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:17 PM (#4107760)
Hey Jerry, why do you and Don think people tune into the game to hear your yucks instead of baseball? #askremy #justcallthegame #redsox
   78. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:18 PM (#4107761)
This game should leave plenty of time for daytime inebriation.
   79. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:19 PM (#4107762)
It's not that Angela Jacobs is unattractive, but man she has that pasty, over-done aging southern belle look that I can't stand. yeesh.

   80. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:21 PM (#4107764)
The pitch F/X info in AtBat on the ipad is actually pretty good.
   81. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:23 PM (#4107767)
Bard just doesn't seem to have good fastball command today.
   82. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:24 PM (#4107769)
There aren't any other day games today? That's kind of odd for a Monday.

2nd huge strikeout against Longorias.
   88. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:28 PM (#4107777)
Will be interesting to see how Bard does from pitches 80-100 or so. Doesn't seem to be slowing down much though.

Bard's at 77 through 5. If he can have two more 15 pitch innings, he should get through 7.
   91. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:31 PM (#4107782)
I want a behind-the-scenes look at Jenny Dell.
   92. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:32 PM (#4107783)
The offense seems completely inert against Shields today.
   93. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:33 PM (#4107784)
...as Shield inexplicably stops throwing strikes to Nick Punto...

It's not exactly the best lineup.

Glad to see Bard pitching well.
   96. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:34 PM (#4107788)
Gameday seems to think Shields throws a 90-91 MPH slider.

It's not a good sign that Remy and Orsillo are bored like this in mid-April during a pitcher's duel on a beautiful day at home against a great club.

And maybe I'm getting grumpy, but the amount of fill-in ads for the Red Sox has reached a new low.
   98. Dan Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:35 PM (#4107790)
Salty jammed on a 79 MPH changeup?
   99. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: April 16, 2012 at 12:35 PM (#4107791)
Great at-bat for Salty. Fouled off a down-the-middle fastball, and popped the other pitch up to right. Solid.
