This looks promising.....

I'd say this is unbelievable but it's very believable.
   103. Dan Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:33 PM (#4125977)
So Valentine didn't bat Sweeney for DMac or Byrd or Salty for Shoppach, and now he's leaving Doubront in to blow the lead with his slow hook (yet again). I'm sorry, but he's got to go. He's jsust not the guy we thought he was.
   104. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:33 PM (#4125978)
Fire him please.
   105. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:34 PM (#4125979)
Valentine really has had a crazy slow hook. And has often seemed out of it.

And what does like about Padilla as his setup man?
   106. Dan Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:34 PM (#4125980)
Valentine has to go. That's it.

Was always going to happen after they couldn't drive a run in , during the top half of this inning. This team just doesn't have it , right now
   108. Dan Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:37 PM (#4125984)
I'm pretty sure Valentine is just past his prime as a manager. He's not the guy who managed the Mets or even who managed in Japan anymore. We thought we were getting that guy, but we got the equivalent as a manager of the version of John Smoltz we had pitch for the Red Sox.
   109. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:37 PM (#4125985)
That's a horribly cruel analogy.
   110. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:38 PM (#4125986)
Felix has an ugly line and he pitched really well. If Byrd makes that catch and Valentine doesn't have his head up his ass this is about a two run game for Felix.
   111. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:38 PM (#4125987)
Wow, great job Padilla. Credit where credit is due.
   112. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:40 PM (#4125990)
Taking a little wider view of things, Doubront wasn't exactly getting lit up in that inning. He had been cruising and they didn't hammer him that inning. He even pitched well to the final batter (before the walk).
   113. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:41 PM (#4125992)
I'd like to amend my previous compliment of Padilla. That was not a very good pitch.

Ever seen the movie Scanners, Jay? That about covers it.

Lefty lefty and they walk Ortiz. Crazy.

   124. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:50 PM (#4126012)
The ball really seems to carry to center/right center.
   125. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:50 PM (#4126013)
Ortiz was running up Pedrioa's back. ???
   126. Dan Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:50 PM (#4126014)
Sooo glad they punished the stupid IBB AND got some insurance runs. They should still have like 15 runs though.
   127. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:51 PM (#4126017)
Gonzalez: He is still completely lost.
   128. Dan Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:51 PM (#4126018)
Going to be an interesting Allstar Game if the ball carries like it has tonight.

Another hideous AB by Gonzalez. Sigh.

   134. Jay Seaver Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:55 PM (#4126026)
Jay, I'd rather know what you saw at the movies!
First eight days were the Independent Film Festival Boston, which I'm still writing up. Mostly, pretty good stuff, including the two baseball movies: Pelotero, about Dominican kids in the months leading up to Signing Day, is excellent; Knuckleball!, which followed Tim Wakefield and R.A. Dickey, is pretty good. Of the rest, I really liked The Imposter (doc on a Frenchman who pretended to be a missing American teenager for several months), Fairhaven (guy returns to small MA town for his father's funeral after ten years away), Girl Model (Siberian teenager goes to Japan to work for a modeling agency), and Headhunters (GREAT Norwegian thriller).

Then came James Bond weekend #2 (Diamonds Are Forever, Live & Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, and The Spy Who Loved Me on 35mm) - the 1970s were not a good time for 007.

Sunday was a preview of 2 Days in New York, which isn't quite as good as Delpy's 2 Days in Paris, but is pretty funny, and has Chris Rock as the straight man most of the time. After that, I went to the ballgame, which was bizarrely epic. I mean, my brother and his kids left during the eighth and they played a whole ballgame afterward.

Tonight was The Avengers, which, yeah... is really good.

...

This Middlebrooks fellow looks pretty good, too.
   135. Dan Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:56 PM (#4126028)
Middlebrooks has more homers in a week than Gonzalez has hit all season.
   136. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:57 PM (#4126029)
Avengers was really good? I'm surprised. It just seemed so...
   137. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:58 PM (#4126031)
They should have listened to me and dealt Middlebrooks in the offseason!
   138. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:59 PM (#4126032)
I'd like to feel more relaxed with a six run lead.

Gave me what I wanted and did it well. And, hey, they finally got the Hulk really right (though I was actually pretty fond of the Ang Lee movie).
   143. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:02 PM (#4126039)
I'm not going to be chatter-available a ton this summer, so all y'all can take this as you will...

I'm not a fan of the feel of Sox chatter. Feels like a curdled anger rather than a communal blowing off of steam. You may experience it differently. I don't like not liking things, I guess.
   144. Joel W Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:04 PM (#4126041)
93% on Rotten Tomatoes also.
   145. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:06 PM (#4126042)
The Hulk was that one that I was most worried about. Both movies were so lame and then they didn't have Norton (what happened there?). And these movies--especially a superhero ensemble like that--seem like a series of cliches.

Agree with Matt about the tone here to some degree. Not that I blame anyone for being kinda nuts about this.
   146. Chip Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:06 PM (#4126043)
I agree with Mikael on the curdled anger thing.
   147. Joel W Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:06 PM (#4126044)
@MCA, I've avoided it for the same reason. Perhaps it's just the losing.

Okay, I'm going to save this thread with a solo:

I agree 100%. I think you'll find I didn't post much last year until it all went to #### for just that reason. Going through that and this start I'll say I find it...therapeutic? to vent here during games. I try not to carry that over to the ST threads for what it's worth.
The chatters are definitely a negative thing though. If I'm driving people away I'll try and avoid the ########.

Darren you have the voice of an angel.
   151. Jay Seaver Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:13 PM (#4126052)
I gather that (surprise, surprise) Norton was kind of a pain to work with - even though he neither wrote nor directed Incredible, he was heavily involved in the editing room, and while Marvel made noise about his movie getting the Hulk back on track, it did roughly as well as the one with Eric Bana at the box office, so why throw that ego into an ensemble piece (my pet theory was that Whedon was hired because you need a real egomaniac to corral a half-dozen people who just starred in their own movies)?
   152. Chip Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:13 PM (#4126053)
Something wrong with Pedroia that he's pulled for Punto as a pinch-runner after drawing the walk?
   153. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:16 PM (#4126055)
He looked fine coming off. Probably just a little break for a guy who doesn't get too many.
   154. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:16 PM (#4126056)
Ortiz missed a cookie there. I guess it will only be 5 times on base tonight.

Darren you have the voice of an angel.

I usually can't sing in front of people but for you guys....
   155. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:17 PM (#4126057)
I love Norton but I thought that Hulk movie was boring--no better than the Bana one. Then again, Liv Tyler is not my favorite.

Big loopy breaking ball fooled the ump.
   157. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:19 PM (#4126060)
None of the previous movies with individual avengers in them were written and directed by Whedon.

Padilla's losing a bit on the FB here.
   159. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:20 PM (#4126062)
I really want to love Padilla. The eephus, the perpetual day drunk, the gut - just string together a few more not-blowing-the-game outings, dude.

You're so wrong you don't even know.

Watch Buffy, it's on netflix instant.
   167. Jay Seaver Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:23 PM (#4126072)
159 - I'm aware. :) I actually think that helped The Avengers a lot; he's good at handling a talented ensemble, but left to himself will sort of lean on the same character types. Letting others establish the characters was a good thing.

Win! And Middlebrooks really looks like a keeper.
   168. The Mohole* of David Wells (* - Piehole) Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:23 PM (#4126073)
Red Sox are better than the Royals.... For now.

I was just about to say how much I missed chatter - I've hardly been here , but have probably been insufferable in any case. It has been a tough 10 weeks almost now (including last years collapse) for Sox fans - we have every right to be upset - they have just not been winning games - tough to be positive with all that is going wrong.

In any case - sorry
   170. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:23 PM (#4126075)
And I am happy that the Red Sox won. That's nice.
   171. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:23 PM (#4126076)
Netflix? Is that something you young folks watch on your Phonepods?

I didn't mean to be a scold or ask for apologies, sorry. I get why people have been mad.

I just, I dunno, it's what I feel when I check in on chatter.
   174. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:26 PM (#4126080)
My old roommate was a big Buffy fan. Other than the tight leather outfits that Sarah and Alyson wore I didn't see much I liked about the show.

Oh, and Eliza in tight leather.

Veronica Mars was better.
   178. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:28 PM (#4126084)
Both excellent genre television and insightful commentary on genre television, a community of characters you want to hang around with, a clever take on high school, and hot chicks kicking ass. And funny.
   179. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:28 PM (#4126085)

Anything with Alyson Hannigan in it is suspect at best.

Not in the same league as Buffy or Veronica Mars.
   182. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:30 PM (#4126088)
Veronica Mars was a great show too. I'd rather not pick between them.

You will pick!
   184. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:31 PM (#4126090)

And I like HIMYM dammit!

I liked Veronica Mars more because I like noir more than vampire ####. But both have good writing. And Mars reminds me of Brick (the movie) which I also love.
   186. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:34 PM (#4126096)
I'd pick Buffy, I think. The show was able to do so many things - horror, comedy, family drama, a silent film, a musical. It's a more wide ranging achievement than Veronica Mars, even if it may not have been as consistent week-to-week.

I probably also have a slight personal preference for a show about gender/sexuality over a show about class, but both were very well done on the broad thematic level.
   187. Darren Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:35 PM (#4126097)
And I like HIMYM dammit!

Even the acronym sucks.
   188. Jay Seaver Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:36 PM (#4126098)
If I had to pick, it would probably be Veronica Mars - Kristen Bell >> Sarah Michelle Gellar, and it never had the decline phase where Buffy got swallowed by its mythology (a seemingly inevitable occurrence with genre shows; the writers get ambitious and the most vocal fans like the long-form stories more than the self-contained episodes).

The first few seasons of Buffy are quality stuff, though.
   189. Textbook Editor Posted: May 07, 2012 at 11:37 PM (#4126099)
Wow, the Bana film was pretty bad. Granted, I haven't seen many of the more recent Marvel offerings, but man it disappointed the hell out of me.

I've been pretty busy and haven't had time except to dip into Chatters every now and then... Would resignation be a good word to describe the vibe? Or is it just that's how I feel and I'm projecting?

Don't get me wrong: I am still very excited to see how Bard, Dubront, and Middlebrooks do, and am enjoying Papi's year... I'm just finding I can't get that worked up over things (except for outright stupidity), possibly because of last September. I don't know--just feeling quite blah about things this year.

I think there is a lot of that. Just the 7th inning tonight I felt like as soon as we failed to score in the top of the inning that the Royals would rally and then sure enough they did. It really feels like there is "another shoe" every night with this club.
