Surprised that Salty is catching three straight games, especially with the lefty Lee pitching for the Phillies and the day game after the night game. Bobby V. opting for riding the hot bat? As well as reinforcing that Shoppach will NOT be Beckett's personal catcher?

I think Cliff Lee wishes he had thrown a curve to Aviles, given the way Pedroia and Oetiz flailed at it.

Carl Crawford was on the pre-game show, and when asked about whether Adrian Gonzalez was going to keep him from coming back to the outfield, said that "well, Adrian's a fine athlete... He's not fast, but he can move" in a way that just cracked me up.

Aside from how his production has been sorely missed, I suspect that between this, the running with the antiquarian bookstore thing, and his "Jason, I know we've had our issues in the past..." when introduced after Varitek at the "Christmas at Fenway" thing in 2010, we're missing out on comedy gold with him off to the side.

What a crappy bunt.

Just a great AB from Aviles.

Mike Aviles has been eating his Wheaties this weekend.

Pedroia helpless again against the Lee curve.

Aviles 2012 = Mueller 2003 for wildly unexpected career season?
   9. Chip Posted: May 20, 2012 at 02:18 PM (#4136337)
I like the Josh Beckett who gets a swinging K after starting ahead 0-2 better than the one who gave up screaming line drives to Pence and Wiggington despite starting with that count against them.

I guess starting Salty was a good idea.

Wow. Salty!

I did not expect the Red Sox to get anything off of Lee today.
   13. Chip Posted: May 20, 2012 at 02:34 PM (#4136346)
So annoying.
   14. Chip Posted: May 20, 2012 at 02:37 PM (#4136347)
0-2 screaming line drive. Thankfully David Ortiz is a stellar glove man.
   15. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 20, 2012 at 02:40 PM (#4136350)
I always forget that Ortiz is actually not a total disaster at 1B.
   16. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 20, 2012 at 02:48 PM (#4136354)
Beckett's got to get to the bag faster than that.
   17. plink Posted: May 20, 2012 at 02:49 PM (#4136355)
I know he prefers to be a DH, but I'd guess the new slimmer Ortiz would be a perfectly cromulent first baseman. And... Beckett, not helping his own cause.
   18. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 20, 2012 at 02:51 PM (#4136357)
Yeah, Ortiz is looking surprisingly good out there.
   19. Jay Seaver Posted: May 20, 2012 at 02:55 PM (#4136359)
Ortiz has never been a bad first-baseman in brief stretches, although who knows how well he would have fared if he had to do it for much longer than a week.
   20. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 20, 2012 at 02:56 PM (#4136360)
As I recall he became a full-time DH more for health reasons, although he never had a great defensive reputation.
   21. Chip Posted: May 20, 2012 at 03:09 PM (#4136362)
My favorite standout Ortiz defensive play was the first to third throw he made in the '04 World Series to catch Suppan rounding too far.
   22. Chip Posted: May 20, 2012 at 03:14 PM (#4136365)
Galvis may be setting a record for unassisted POs by a second baseman.
   23. Dale Sams Posted: May 20, 2012 at 03:21 PM (#4136371)
I seriously think if AGon got hurt and Youk wasn't available, Papi should start over Punto.
   24. Chip Posted: May 20, 2012 at 03:57 PM (#4136389)
Throwing home was dumb. Throwing home and not cutting it was even dumber. Middlebrooks had every opportunity to.
   25. Chip Posted: May 20, 2012 at 04:05 PM (#4136392)
Walking Hunter Pence after being ahead 0-2 to bring the tying run to the plate is all kinds of ###### up.
   26. Chip Posted: May 20, 2012 at 04:06 PM (#4136393)
Her we go, 0-2 again.
