My daughter just tried to guess at how to pronounce "Podsednik". She went with "Podstink". I said that was more accurate than she probably knew.
   2. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:11 PM (#4146803)
On top of that, she's closer to pronouncing the name correct than the Red Sox announcers.

Little bobble by Bautista saved Gonzalez there.
   4. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:13 PM (#4146805)
Wow... Gonzalez's legs beat Bautista's arm.

   5. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:14 PM (#4146806)
20 doubles? I kne he was hitting a lot of them but that's a pace for sixty.
   6. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:15 PM (#4146807)
First pitch by Verlander against the Yankees goes for a Jeter home run.
   7. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:16 PM (#4146808)
And he follows that up with a 4 pitch walk to Granderson.

Too bad Gonzalez's 60 doubles will pair with 12 home runs.

That Jacoby Ellsbury commercial for Dunkin Donuts is a horrible tease.
   9. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:17 PM (#4146810)
No radar gun on NESN?
   10. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:19 PM (#4146811)
Bard looks like ####.
   11. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:19 PM (#4146812)
Better than Verlander looks today though!
   12. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:20 PM (#4146813)
Lets walk the first two guys ahead of Bautista, that won't be a problem.
   13. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:20 PM (#4146814)
Bard - this is not the way you get to pitch deeper into games. THROW STRIKE!
   14. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:22 PM (#4146816)
What's that frisbee pitch he is throwing? Is he trying to throw a cutter or overthrowing the slider? He has no clue where it's going.
   15. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:23 PM (#4146817)
Don't worry about the ####### runners Dan.
   16. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:24 PM (#4146818)
14 - Those are fastballs. I don't know if it's the camera angle or if he's getting irregular cut on them, but those are his fastball. I changed to the Jays feed so I'd have the radar gun readings.
   17. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:25 PM (#4146820)
Shocking result there.
   18. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:26 PM (#4146821)
Well, that was inevitable.
   19. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:26 PM (#4146822)
Bard has nothing. At all.
   20. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:27 PM (#4146824)
Don't stare in at the ump Danny boy. You sent getting a borderline call when you can't find the plate.
   21. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:27 PM (#4146825)
Pull him. Right now. End this.
   22. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:28 PM (#4146826)
Pretty sure Bard is tipping pitches. Jays broadcast just showed Bautista in the Jays dugout doing an impression of Bard throwing a slider, presumably illustrating a tip.
   23. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:28 PM (#4146827)
Off day tomorrow and Buxhholz and Doubront went reasonably deep so not a lot of need to save the bullpen here.
   24. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:29 PM (#4146828)
22 - so he can't throw strikes and is tipping his pitches, grrrrreat.
   25. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:31 PM (#4146830)
I wonder how a healthy Bard would've done as a starter. This version with an unravelling shoulder isn't so hot though.
   26. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:35 PM (#4146831)
He didn't exactly set the world on fire at single A. I know it's five years ago and he's grown as a pitcher but I think Bard just is not a starting pitcher.

Someone notify baseball chick, Brad Ausmus on MLB tonight all afternoon.
   27. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:37 PM (#4146834)
Am I the only one who watches Bard and thinks shoulder injury? The fastball command is gone, the arm slot has dropped significantly, and the only way he's able to generate any velocity on the fastball is by dropping down even more. He barely cracks 90 when he throws from the high 3/4 arm slot that used to be his standard release point.
   28. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:40 PM (#4146837)
It's possible. I think a larger percentage of pitchers not succeeding is injury related than we realize.

I think the change in role makes it tough to tell. The fact that even when he needs to crack it up he can't gives credence to your theory.
   29. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:41 PM (#4146838)
I like the idea of having him go out of the stretch here lack of success notwithstanding.
   30. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:42 PM (#4146839)
It could also just be a mechanical issue. Lord knows his mechanics are completely ###### anyway. He needs to be DLed either way, whether there's a real injury or not, because he needs some rehab games in AAA to refind his mechanics even if he is healthy.
   31. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:43 PM (#4146840)
Bard still has options doesn't he? They could just send him down.
   32. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:44 PM (#4146841)
I think I'm going to swap to the Nats game if this doesn't get any better here quickly. I have no desire to watch Bard completely implode.
   33. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:44 PM (#4146842)
Yeah I'm done with this game. Later.
   34. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:45 PM (#4146843)
They can't be serious bout a sacrifice here.
   35. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:46 PM (#4146846)
Has Davis just not been watching this game from the dugout? Farrell's probably going to slap him upside the head for that strikeout.
   36. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:47 PM (#4146847)
It looks like he's ditched the fastball. That is not a sustainable solution.

I don't know if Bard is hurt, or screwed up in some other way, but he just doesn't look like someone who should be in a major league rotation right now.
   37. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:48 PM (#4146849)
That was a gift call.
   38. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:48 PM (#4146850)
Lombardozzi and Harper just lead off against Tommy Hanson with back to back homers. The Harper one was just a ####### BOMB. The Nats are incredibly fun to watch.
   39. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:49 PM (#4146851)
I don't know if Bard is hurt, or screwed up in some other way, but he just doesn't look like someone who should be in a major league rotation right now.

It's not like he's going to just instantly go back to being a dominant reliever with a role change either. He is completely lost right now. He needs to pitch in AAA, either as a starter or reliever.
   40. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:52 PM (#4146854)
This has to be his last batter either way.
   41. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:53 PM (#4146855)
This, too, was inevitable.
   42. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:53 PM (#4146856)
No one is even warming?!?!?
   43. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:56 PM (#4146858)
That's ugly right there. Bard seems like the kind of guy who could let the HBP bother him. Get him out of there.
   44. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:58 PM (#4146859)
Those are some painful-looking HBPs. Bard needs to come out before someone (besides him) goes on the DL.

(And what is the move after the game? Bard to the DL, Melancon up for Tuesday, and a starter later in the week?)
   45. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:58 PM (#4146860)
What happened on the HBP?
   46. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 01:59 PM (#4146862)
It went off Encarnacion's wrist with the same sound as coming off the bat. He was down in pain for quite a while; I'm kind of surprised he stayed in.
   47. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:01 PM (#4146863)
I wouldn't be surprised if Encarnacion doesn't bat again.
   48. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:02 PM (#4146864)
YOu should all go watch the clip of Harper's home run on Gameday - just a ####### incredible shot, even without considering it was by a 19 year old kid.
   49. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:02 PM (#4146865)
(And what is the move after the game? Bard to the DL, Melancon up for Tuesday, and a starter later in the week?)

Who is available as a starter? Ohlendorf opted out yesterday, cn we still keep him like we did with Cook and do we want too? Matsuzaka ready?
   50. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:04 PM (#4146866)
Wow, Harper smoked that. It's not a Nick Punto bomb but he hit it well.
   51. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:04 PM (#4146867)
I'd call up Ohlendorf and give him at least a start or 2, if they can get him back.
   52. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:05 PM (#4146868)
(And what is the move after the game? Bard to the DL, Melancon up for Tuesday, and a starter later in the week?)
I guess, but which starter? Daisuke has two pretty good starts in a row, but he's only throwing 5 innings and the word on his stuff and command isn't encouraging. And the rest of the rotations in AA/AAA are, well, AA/AAA rotations.
   53. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:05 PM (#4146869)
Padilla! I think Vincente Padilla is probably the best bet. He can throw three innings in relief, I'm sure he can go 5-6 if needed next week.
   54. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:06 PM (#4146870)
I'd go with Matsuzaka... He hasn't gone deep into games in AAA, but he's pitched well for 5-ish innings in his last couple starts.
   55. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:06 PM (#4146871)
Geez, Shoppach practically dove in front of that.
   56. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:07 PM (#4146873)
Shoppach really shouldn't be awarded first on something like that, but, hey, maybe it ends any pressure to retaliate.
   57. Dan Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:12 PM (#4146875)
Harper in an interview on MASN just flat out told the reporter that with this year's draft rules he would've gone to college instead of signing. That's a really, really bad thing for the game.
   58. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:17 PM (#4146878)
Uuuuuugh.
   59. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:18 PM (#4146879)

I'm sure he said that but I doubt it's what he would have done. At the end of the day multi-million dollars is pretty appealing.
   60. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 03, 2012 at 02:36 PM (#4146887)
Franklin Morales making a bid to get a spot start if Bard is sent down or disabled?
   61. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 03:22 PM (#4146908)
No, Jerry, balls cannot pick up speed on the turf. That's just physics.
   62. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 03:37 PM (#4146920)
Those Canadians are savages, rooting for balls in the head area.
   63. Jay Seaver Posted: June 03, 2012 at 04:01 PM (#4146933)
And bleah. Odds of a roster move in the next 50 hours?
