Middlebrooks was supposed to have a very good glove according to all the minors/prospect stuff I read. In reality he looks very unpolished on defense.

Never liked giving an E to the OF for a throw like that. Could just say runner advanced on the throw.

Never liked giving an E to the OF for a throw like that. Could just say runner advanced on the throw.

That's what Keith Moreland said on the Cubs' radio broadcast. (Actually, he suggested assigning a "team error," but not giving it to the outfielder.)
   104. Brian C Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:25 PM (#4158973)
It's not really an error, though, in the sense that there's nothing routine about throwing a runner out from the outfield. I like Ghost's idea better than a "team error" concept - just say he advanced on the throw.
   105. Brian C Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:27 PM (#4158974)
Of course, I like the idea of getting rid of errors altogether, so the thought of figuring out new kinds of errors triggers my bias.
   106. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:32 PM (#4158975)
Lester's fall apart inning has arrived.
   107. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:33 PM (#4158976)
I agree with Brian. Errors should go away completely, along with unearned runs.
   108. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:33 PM (#4158977)
Valbuena. Muy buena!
   109. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:33 PM (#4158978)
Oh no.
   110. Jay Seaver Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:34 PM (#4158979)
Well, frig.
   111. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:34 PM (#4158980)
Lester's fall apart inning has arrived.

Called it. ####### Lester.
   112. Brian C Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:34 PM (#4158981)
Wow! That's the Cubs' first HR since ... last Friday. One week.
   113. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:35 PM (#4158982)
I assume the Cubs fans now understand our negativity, at least a little.
   114. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:36 PM (#4158983)
Stepped out when it was 3-0 now it's 4-3

I really am sick of Lester
   115. Brian C Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:36 PM (#4158985)
I assume the Cubs fans now understand our negativity, at least a little.

We would, if we thought that this meant that the Cubs might actually win.
   116. Jay Seaver Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:37 PM (#4158986)
You could see it coming. A call didn't go Lester's way, and his demeanor just seemed to completely change.
   117. Darren Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:37 PM (#4158987)
Guess who just tuned back in!
   118. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:38 PM (#4158988)
I assume the Cubs fans now understand our negativity, at least a little.

Oh sure--just appreciate that this is a truly awful Cub team (with, particularly, a truly awful bullpen). Even if they score the two more unanswered runs they need to take the lead (and as noted, a homer's more a weekly thing for the Cubs than a daily thing), their chances of giving it back are high. I was actually a little shocked they didn't blow it yesterday.
   119. Brian C Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:39 PM (#4158989)
Oops, I meant last Saturday. Forgot what day it is.
   120. Brian C Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:40 PM (#4158990)
Valbuena's now hitting .111/.111/.444 after that HR, which is an awesome line.
   121. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:42 PM (#4158993)
I actually think Valbuena was a pretty astute free talent pickup, particularly given how Stewart's stunk it up. His minor league track record's pretty decent.
   122. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:44 PM (#4158994)
Valbuena is a guy who should at least stick as a utility player. He's probably stretched as a starter, especially at third (he doesn't really have the bat to be a corner infielder), but he's a solid utility guy / PHer.
   123. Brian C Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:45 PM (#4158996)

Agreed.
   124. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:46 PM (#4158997)
I can understand how bad the Cubs are - we Sox fans also know that the Ortiz botched run earlier would surely come into play...
   125. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:48 PM (#4158998)
At least Gonzalez is willing to walk now.
   126. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:48 PM (#4158999)

That's how I see him as well. Which makes him a bona fide starting candidate on a bad team whose incumbent third baseman is Ian Stewart.

I wouldn't be shocked to see him have a decent year or two as an every day player--he's hit for good averages with mid-range power and pretty fair walk totals in the minors--and god knows he'll never have a better opportunity to prove it than he's got now.
   127. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:51 PM (#4159000)
I didn't even know Vicente Padilla was still around.
   128. McCoy Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:51 PM (#4159001)
Valbuena is a starter on a 116 loss type team.

Still sweating up a storm
   130. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:53 PM (#4159003)
trap - I saw it.
   131. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:53 PM (#4159004)
Blown call?
   132. Darren Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:54 PM (#4159005)
great call.
   133. Jay Seaver Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:54 PM (#4159006)
Nava in just in time, apparently.
   134. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:54 PM (#4159007)
Cubs' radio crew's undecided after watching it more than once, so I suppose I can't get too pissed.
   135. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:54 PM (#4159008)
Awkward as hell, but that's a catch.
   136. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:54 PM (#4159010)
Wow - I guess it was caught.
   137. McCoy Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:55 PM (#4159011)
I remember about 10 years back the Red Sox came in to town to play the Phillies in an interleague game. So the city and stadium was swamped with Red Sox fans. So anyway, as the players come up to bat their batting average and picture would get flashed up on the screen. It seemed like every single Red Sox hitter was hitting something like .320 or better. Meanwhile the all the Phillies were hitting like .220 to .260 and a Sox fan next to me said something like, "Geez, does this team have any hitters?" How far the Sox have come since then.
   138. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:56 PM (#4159012)
The way the ball bounced up after he got his glove down,I thought the ump would have called it no catch.
   139. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:56 PM (#4159014)
Gameday says Buck is wrong, and Valentine did double switch.
   140. McCoy Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:56 PM (#4159015)
So unless Soriano does something here at the end I think it is safe to declare Soriano has begun his cold streak.
   141. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:57 PM (#4159016)
Hughes and Moreland said it looked at first like a trap, but that on the replay it looked as if the glove might've been inverted on the catch in such a way as to make it only *look* like a trap.

EDIT: Moreland now says he thinks it looks like it hit the ground, but acknowledges that it's inconclusive even on super-slo-mo.

Which points up one advantage, if the only one, the Cubs have on the White Sox: their announcers, while partisan, are not completely insufferable homers.
   142. Darren Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:58 PM (#4159017)
Throw that eephus!
   143. Brian C Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:59 PM (#4159018)
Buck just said that Soriano's "been on a homerun tear." Apparently he didn't see my earlier note that hte Cubs hadn't hit a HR for a week.
   144. Darren Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:59 PM (#4159019)

This is correct (IMHO). You could see the ball bounce, but on replay it looks like what it was bouncing off of was the webbing of the glove. Very tough call and it looks like they got it right.
   145. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:02 PM (#4159020)
I think it's tempting fate to expect a second scoreless inning out of Manny Corpas, not that Cub bullpen has any sure things.
   146. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:06 PM (#4159022)
From what I've seen, Castillo throws much better than Clevenger.
   147. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:06 PM (#4159023)
They traded Lowrie away , then sign Nick Punto and I am meant to be level headed this year?
   148. McCoy Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:08 PM (#4159024)
I think Castillo is more of the real deal than Clevenger. Clevenger looks like he'll be a bit better with the bat than Hill and that is about it.
   149. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:08 PM (#4159025)
Weather note: If this game goes extras, a rain delay's likely. Big patch of rainstorms just to the west (which is welcome--it hasn't rained here in over 2 weeks).
   150. McCoy Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:08 PM (#4159026)
Corpas really wants baserunners.
   151. McCoy Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:09 PM (#4159027)
Weather note: If this game goes extras, a rain delay's likely.

The Cubs scoring 4 runs in a game is a BIG IF.
   152. Darren Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:10 PM (#4159028)
Just somehow get past this guy to Nava!
   153. Darren Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:11 PM (#4159029)
Pedroia missed one there.
   154. McCoy Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:12 PM (#4159030)
So what is it going to be in the 9th? Baker, LaHair, Castillo?
   155. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:12 PM (#4159031)
The Cubs scoring 4 runs in a game is a BIG IF.

Well, yes, but they've already got 3 of 'em. I'm as down on this year's version of the Cubs as anyone, but 1 run with the wind blowing out's not exactly hitting the Mega Millions.
   156. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:14 PM (#4159032)
Clevenger to hit for Baker, then LaHair. Meh.
   157. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:15 PM (#4159033)
OK, show's what I know. Clevenger now 3 for 4 as a pinch-hitter.
   158. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:16 PM (#4159034)
0-2 pitch - here it comes
   159. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:16 PM (#4159035)
And this non-edit function is exposing my many typos for all to see.
   160. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:16 PM (#4159036)
0-2 count, allow base hit. Great job, Ace.
   161. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:16 PM (#4159037)
LaHair's gonna walk it off.
   162. Jay Seaver Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:17 PM (#4159038)
Please don't screw this up, Aceves.
   163. McCoy Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:17 PM (#4159039)
Well, yes, but they've already got 3 of 'em. I'm as down on this year's version of the Cubs as anyone, but 1 run with the wind blowing out's not exactly hitting the Mega Millions.

It is for the Cubs.
   164. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:18 PM (#4159040)
So you're saying LaHair's got him right where he wants him?
   165. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:21 PM (#4159041)
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Aceves isn't feeling comfortable.
   166. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:22 PM (#4159042)
I forgot how much fun it was to watch these guys
   167. Jay Seaver Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:22 PM (#4159043)
(exhales)
   168. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:22 PM (#4159044)
Crap. And a catcher batting with another one running. Hit the ball in the air, please.
   169. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:23 PM (#4159045)
Uh, yeah. Like I was saying.
   170. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:24 PM (#4159046)
Hey, a win.
   171. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:25 PM (#4159047)
Well, I'll be at the rubber match tomorrow night. I'm a little disappointed I won't get to boo Beckett. I hate that little punkass.
   172. Dan Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:28 PM (#4159048)
Jesus Montero just hit a ball about 450 feet off of Lincecum.
   173. Gern Blanston Posted: June 16, 2012 at 10:28 PM (#4159049)
That sounds like a good game to flip to, actually...
