Line-up shuffling continues; I do like Drew in the lead-off spot.
   2. Jay Seaver Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:08 PM (#3237127)
Huh. I also like Pedroia in the two-spot, even more than I like Drew leading off.
   3. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:09 PM (#3237128)
Well that's a nice start. Jones didn't exactly impress me on that one.
   4. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:10 PM (#3237136)
2 at bats, 2 hits, clearly this lineup is the right one.
   5. Jay Seaver Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:11 PM (#3237137)
Okay. Another bit of great line-up construction: Youk batting third.
   6. Jay Seaver Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:14 PM (#3237145)
Ah, crud. I could have done that all night.
   7. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:15 PM (#3237149)
You can still do it, we'll just pretend they keep getting hits.
   8. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:17 PM (#3237152)
Hmmmm...that inning ended rather abruptly.
   9. Jay Seaver Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:19 PM (#3237158)
Huh, Sean Gunn is down to doing ads now? Not my favorite part of Gilmore Girls, but that's got to be a step down from series regular.
   10. DKDC Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:19 PM (#3237160)
It would be nice to see the O's put up a fight this time. But maybe that's too much to ask.
   11. DKDC Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:25 PM (#3237171)
Yep, it looks like the surrender monkeys are going to make Lester look like Koufax again.

This should be a lopsided affair.
   12. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:33 PM (#3237187)
Wieters showed a pretty good arm there, a lot closer at second than it had any right to be on the Ellsbury steal.
   13. Jay Seaver Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:33 PM (#3237188)
I'll agree with Eck about Wieters's arm. (And thank NESN for bringing Eck back rather than stick us with three more days of Dave Roberts)
   14. Jay Seaver Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:43 PM (#3237203)
Idle thought: Given how immobile Lowell is right now, and likely will be even if he doesn't go on the DL, does it make sense just to switch his and Youkilis's positions? Youk looks pretty good at third right now.
   15. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:46 PM (#3237205)
Not the worst idea I've heard. I wonder if Lowell might be more likely to injure himself further playing a new position? Just playing devil's advocate though, I like the idea.
   16. Jay Seaver Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:50 PM (#3237210)
True; this probably isn't the best time for that, although I suppose it might have been a tough sell during spring training.
   17. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:50 PM (#3237215)
This is really shaping up as one of those games. Squander squander squander.
   18. Jay Seaver Posted: June 29, 2009 at 11:55 PM (#3237220)
A little out of date on that promo, NESN. I got my tickets this morning. If they were tickets to a ballgame, they'd be the best seats I ever had.

(I don't generally spend that much on concert tickets, but Sir Paul is getting old and the Beatles don't seem to be as oddly death-resistant as the Stones)
   19. Jay Seaver Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:00 AM (#3237233)
That's a pretty sick-looking curve from Lester.
   20. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:06 AM (#3237238)
Barring injury he is going to obliterate Harper's record.
   21. Jay Seaver Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:08 AM (#3237241)
That was a strike? I wasn't giving the automatic call on 3-0 or 0-2 much credence, but yikes.

Then again, the base hit is better.
   22. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:10 AM (#3237250)
See, Tito's a genius!
   23. Jay Seaver Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:11 AM (#3237253)
Drew is working on the cycle on decreasing order of difficulty, I guess.

This game should be even more out of control than it is, but no need to get greedy.
   24. Jay Seaver Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:13 AM (#3237257)
Nice leap; I thought that was going to go.
   25. Biff isn't really an apt handle anymore Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:13 AM (#3237258)
That catch was insane.
   26. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:16 AM (#3237264)
I'm a curmudgeon but I find the leaping catch at the wall the most overrated play in baseball. Yes it's a nice catch but Jones (as happens 95% of the time on those plays) was able to drift back and get in position then leap. Frankly as long as an outfielder is tall enough it's a catch that should be made. To me it's fairly similar to a running catch, nice, but nothing I get too excited about.
   27. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:18 AM (#3237270)
Lester got hosed on the 1-2 pitch.
   28. Jay Seaver Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:19 AM (#3237271)
I get that. He looked kind of bad on the triple, so maybe it doesn't say great things about overall skill, but it is a fun play in terms of suspense of the moment.
   29. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:20 AM (#3237275)
28 - I'll agree with the suspense angle, it is one of the rare plays where you don't have a pretty good idea what is happening off the bat.
   30. Fly, the most judgment-free human being on Earth Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:33 AM (#3237290)
Is Jim Palmer made entirely of some sort of space-age plastic? He looks like I imagine Woody will look in Toy Story 4.
   31. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:40 AM (#3237293)
So Matt Wieters is not fast.
   32. DKDC Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:41 AM (#3237294)
It looks like the O's are pretty lucky this one isn't a blowout...yet.

Jones has very good physical tools, but he's definitely inconsistent.

The Orioles need to updated their scouting report on Jon Lester, because whatever they are doing ain't working. Lester's good, but he's not THIS good.
   33. Jay Seaver Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:46 AM (#3237298)
I dunno, I thought Lester wasn't that good for quite a while, even for months after the no-hitter, but I'm starting to think that, yeah, he really is this good.
   34. DKDC Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:49 AM (#3237301)
I don't mean that as a slight against Lester. But the guy has a 2.25 ERA against the Orioles and a 4.20 ERA against everyone else. It's annoying.
   35. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:50 AM (#3237302)
3/4 of the way there.
   36. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:51 AM (#3237303)
Where'd that miss?
   37. DKDC Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:52 AM (#3237306)
Brian Bass has nowhere near enough talent to not get that call.
   38. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:58 AM (#3237313)
hey
   39. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 12:58 AM (#3237314)
mornin'!
   40. DKDC Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:01 AM (#3237316)
Just putrid.
   41. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:12 AM (#3237335)
I thought that was a hit for sure
   42. Jay Seaver Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:15 AM (#3237340)
Yeah, but as we saw earlier, Wieters is slow. Not Molina-slow, but average catcher-slow.
   43. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:35 AM (#3237365)
I hope Oki is pitching the 9th - no need to micro manage any further
   44. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:42 AM (#3237378)
I agree with you Phil, Tito doesn't apparently.
   45. DKDC Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:42 AM (#3237379)
I was hoping for Oki, too. He's the one Red Sox pitcher the O's handle pretty well.
   46. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:45 AM (#3237381)
Why not use Oki for the 9th? jesus
   47. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:47 AM (#3237386)
Orsillo pointed out Ramirez hasn't worked since Thursday but yeah, why go searching for a reliever who doesn't have it if you don't have to?
   48. Phil Coorey. Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:47 AM (#3237387)
I was hoping for Oki, too. He's the one Red Sox pitcher the O's handle pretty well.

That was last year, right??

That become funny almost - the O's were killing him!!
   49. DKDC Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:50 AM (#3237394)
Yep, Jay Payton hit a grand slam off of him.
   50. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:51 AM (#3237395)
OK, let's not have the cheap save, end this here.
   51. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:51 AM (#3237398)
argh
   52. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:52 AM (#3237400)
Not enjoying this. We should have salted this game away about 5 innings ago and now the tie run is in the on deck circle.
   53. DKDC Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:54 AM (#3237402)
Wieters forgot to mention...he's actually left-handed.
   54. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:54 AM (#3237403)
And by the way, I am now perfectly OK with the cheap save.
   55. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:55 AM (#3237404)
Jason Bay making up for a rough night offensively!
   56. Biff isn't really an apt handle anymore Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:56 AM (#3237405)
The cheapest of all possibel saves.
   57. Jay Seaver Posted: June 30, 2009 at 01:56 AM (#3237406)
Cheapie save is fine here.
   58. DKDC Posted: June 30, 2009 at 02:00 AM (#3237409)
Well, hopefully they can look like a major league lineup against the old man tomorrow.

I won't hold my breath.
   59. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: June 30, 2009 at 02:06 AM (#3237416)
Masterson better be ready to pitch some innings tomorrow...
