Beckett trade talks today will propel him to pitch well and possibly win against Justin Verlander. Looks for the Sox to score early and get the win.

how is the weather looking out there? is this game going to happen?

I'm about 15 miles north and it's very dark and gloomy but so far no rain.

Clay Buchholz eating a lollipop in the dugout is the early leader in the competition for the least macho thing a Red Sox player can do.

It's only been hitting about 91 but his fastball has life very early on.

A walk for Gonzo!

The Gonzalez walk thing is weird. Watching him I don't get the impression that he's swinging at a large number of bad pitches. It just seems odd.

But he has such an amazing ability to actually make (weak) contact with bad pitches, that it only takes one hack to turn an AB vs a wild pitcher into an out instead of a walk.
   9. veer bender Posted: July 31, 2012 at 08:07 PM (#4197611)
At least, that's what I've been seeing on low pitches, turning them into weak, fair grounders.

What veer bender said. He's been lunging at pitches too. He doesn't only chase, but he gets so far out in front that he just rolls over stuff, but still makes contact for weak outs.

Beckett fell apart quickly here.
   12. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: July 31, 2012 at 08:14 PM (#4197620)
Not disputing a lot of weak contact but I don't see the sort of wild swinging I'd expect from a guy walking as rarely as he is.

Man, one things go wrong and this pitching staff goes to ####.

Why not Morales here? You got the lefty Fielder due and Morales can go multiple innings too.

Just tuning in - what happened to Beckett?
   14. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:25 PM (#4197661)
Internet says back spasm. Awesome.
   15. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:25 PM (#4197662)
Back spasm. Haven't heard anything more detailed than that. I didn't see anything that obviously caused it.

Back spasm is good in the sense that there's no reason to think he'll have to go on the DL.

Sox win! Kinda funny, Verlander gets a complete game yet it's his first start of less than six innings since 2010.
