MLB Network having the coverage for anybody outside NE.

I'm glad MLB is streaming the Fenway ceremony, but the Jurassic Park music they're using is really distracting, and robs the broadcast of any crowd noise, which is too bad.

Apparently it's actually being played there. As John Williams IS the composer for this thing....

Saw on Twitter that they really did invite everybody. There are, like, one or two guys there who's only Red Sox experience was a inning pitched or so.

That makes it better, but it's still annoying that they're filling the mix with it, instead of including the crowd.

WEEI, btw, went to an ad and missed Tito's introduction. Gotta think that was intentional. Stay classy, Red Sox.

Varitek, Wakefield and Ortiz wheel in Bobby Doerr and Johnny Pesky. That is awesome, and I'm not even a Red Sox fan.

It's so infuriating that the mic for MLB is hooked up to the motherf'ing PA, who is a clown, and we can't hear any crowd noise. I would have killed to hear Pedro and Tito's applause. And the WTF??? for Jose Canseco.

Say, when Wrigley turns 100 in 2014, will they make a point of having the KC Royals be play against them in a interleague game, so that the teams can wear the authentic unis from the 1914 opener?
   20. bunyon Posted: April 20, 2012 at 03:16 PM (#4111564)
I would have killed to hear Pedro and Tito's applause.

According to my source in the Red Sox front office, no one applauded.

I still say Brian Roberts was safe and Bucholtz's no-no was a one-hitter.
   22. Gamingboy Posted: April 20, 2012 at 03:18 PM (#4111568)
What is this.... the batters are wearing... HELMETS!?!?!!

They didn't have effing helmets in 1912!
   23. Gamingboy Posted: April 20, 2012 at 03:19 PM (#4111569)
Pedroia apparently was using a 1912 glove there.
   24. Dale Sams Posted: April 20, 2012 at 03:20 PM (#4111570)
I think that pretty much says it all for the 2011-2012 Sox right there.

   34. Dan Posted: April 20, 2012 at 03:54 PM (#4111607)
The Red Sox have now allowed 10 home runs on 2 strike counts already this year.
   35. Dan Posted: April 20, 2012 at 03:57 PM (#4111610)
That looked like a home run, off the ledge on the top of the wall.

I like this dance. It's a clear HR on review, the umps will come out and signal for the HR, but rest assured Girardi will come out to make a token argument.

I like this dance. It's a clear HR on review, the umps will come out and signal for the HR, but rest assured Girardi will come out to make a token argument.

The best part is that the replay rules specifies that arguing the result of the review is an automatic ejection, but managers always argue it and never get tossed.
   40. Fly should without a doubt be number !!!!! Posted: April 20, 2012 at 03:59 PM (#4111618)
I've never seen an argument over the result of a review. Usually the other manager comes out to have it explained, but I've never seen it as an argument.
   41. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 20, 2012 at 03:59 PM (#4111619)

   42. Dan Posted: April 20, 2012 at 03:59 PM (#4111620)
The way that bounced, it was obvious that it had ricocheted off that ledge. It was obvious in real time. The umpires apparently have 0 understanding of how balls bounce off of surfaces.

Yeah, that ball in Detroit was pretty awful for similar reasons, and even more obvious.

Ross and Repko batting 8th and 9th vs. RHP might as well be 2 pitchers being allowed to hit. What a disaster.

Played hooky from work one time to watch Pedro pitch a getaway day game at Camden Yards back in the summer of 03. Got in trouble for it but it was still worth it. He threw a ####### gem of a game.

Was also in the stands in B'more for Manny's #500 back in May 08. Probably the apex of Fenway South. Memorial Day weekend, Saturday night, fresh off a title. The end was near for Manny and the Sox and we kinda knew it by then, but the good times were good.
   59. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 20, 2012 at 04:18 PM (#4111657)
I saw Pedro shut out Tampa Bay some time in 2004 at Fenway. At the time I thought it was possible it would be his last shutout, but he threw one in 2005 for the Mets.
   60. Flynn Posted: April 20, 2012 at 04:21 PM (#4111662)
I didn't miss a Red Sox game in Oakland from 01-05, including the 03 playoffs. They were just so vital to me in those days, I planned my life around big games. I got to see Pedro pitch at Fenway Park in 2003, which was phenomenal as he went 9 and struck out Tim Salmon to end the game. 127 pitches was not a good idea, but when you're sitting in the loges in the slot between the ump and the right handed hitter (so you can call strikes from your seat), you don't really care.
   61. Answer Guy Posted: April 20, 2012 at 04:24 PM (#4111666)
For some reason I drew Wakefield starts a lot when I went to Sox games.

Last game I went to was at Fenway vs. Oakland in August. He got shelled by the As. The Sox hadn't started the collapse yet then though. They ended in Baltimore, 4 miles from my house, but you couldn't have paid me enough to sit in those stands. I had a bad feeling...and I was 100% right about it.

I'm really loving these retro unis. I think I actually prefer them to the Yankees and Red Sox typical attire. I think there's something to baggier uniforms and stirrups in baseball. It's just sort of... nice.

Also, Pedroia looks *really* tiny in a baggy uni.

   69. Dan Posted: April 20, 2012 at 04:54 PM (#4111703)
You know, a lot of the blame for this team's start has gone on the pitching, but the offense has scored more than 3 runs precisely 5 of 12 games so far, and on their way to 5 of 13 if they don't wake the #### up.

The first run was Jeter scoring after RoE and getting 2nd on a WP, with an ARod single driving him home.

The most AB for a non-pitcher with a BA ~.100 is Antonio Perez, 2006 A's(Thanks B-Ref PI!!!). 98 AB with a 102/185/204 line.

I propose "the Perez line"!

Why is he still pitching? I think our relievers can avoid giving up a HR per inning, since Melancon is in the minors.

   84. Answer Guy Posted: April 20, 2012 at 05:11 PM (#4111729)
Good work on that, Snapper.

Mario Mendoza's lifetime BA was actually something like .215, so strictly going by accuracy should be named for someone else. But it sounds so awesome that it has to stick. Plus it's kind of famous now.

Sort of like how the Battle of Bunker Hill wasn't fought on Bunker Hill.
   85. Swedish Chef Posted: April 20, 2012 at 05:12 PM (#4111732)
Nope, not at all like 1912 baseball.

It's nice of Buchholz not to allow any baserunners between the regular home runs.

What's the record for solo HR's in a game?

5 has to be the record for a single pitcher, right?
   91. Answer Guy Posted: April 20, 2012 at 05:18 PM (#4111744)
One would think, because it's hard to give up 5 HRs without men on base, and if any of them are multi-run shots, that's usually enough runs to send a starter to the showers.
   92. Answer Guy Posted: April 20, 2012 at 05:21 PM (#4111747)
Wow...didn't realize that, #89.

Well, that was totally predictable.

Salty isn't a good enough hitter to be a full-time DH, esp. not on a team with Ortiz, Youkilis, and Gonzalez.
   93. Answer Guy Posted: April 20, 2012 at 05:22 PM (#4111750)

Probably something to do with having to start converted relievers against the Yankees each of the next two games. Not to mention the quality of the bullpen.
